Introduction

• The questions which are asked in this section depend upon


Relation. You should have a sound knowledge of the blood
relation in order to solve the questions.
• To remember easily the relations may be divided into two
sides as given below:
1. Relations of Paternal side
2. Relations of Maternal side
1. Relations of Paternal side
• Father's father → Grandfather
• Father's mother → Grandmother
• Father's brother → Uncle
• Father's sister → Aunt
• Children of uncle → Cousin
• Wife of uncle → Aunt
• Children of aunt → Cousin
• Husband of aunt → Uncle
2. Relations of Maternal side
• Mother's father → Maternal grandfather
• Mother's mother → Maternal grandmother
• Mother's brother → Maternal uncle
• Mother's sister → Aunt
• Children of maternal uncle → Cousin
• Wife of maternal uncle → Maternal aunt

• A relation on the mother’s side is called ‘Maternal’


while that on father’s side is called ‘Paternal.’

1. Cracking Jumbled up Descriptions

• In this type of questions, a roundabout


description is given in the form of certain
small relationships and you are required to
analyze the whole chain of relations and crack
the direct relationship between the persons
concerned.
Question 1
• Anil introduces Rohit as the son of the only
brother of his father's wife. How is Rohit
related to Anil ?
(a) Cousin
(b) Son
(c) Uncle
(d) Son-in-law
(e) Brother
Solution
• The relations may be analyzed as follows :
Father’s wife — Mother;
Mother's brother — Uncle;
Uncle's son — Cousin.
So, Rohit is Anil's cousin.
• Hence, the answer is (a).
Question 2
• Amit said - "This girl is the wife of the
grandson of my mother". How is Amit related
to the girl?
A. Brother
B. Grandfather
C. Husband
D. Father-in-law

• Answer: Option D
• Explanation:
• The girl is the wife of grandson of Amit's
mother i.e., the girl is the wife of son of
Amit. Hence, Amit is the father-in-law of
the girl.

• Pointing towards a man, a woman said, "His
mother is the only daughter of my mother."
How is the woman related to the man?
A. Mother
B. Grandmother
C. Sister

• Explanation:
• Only daughter of my mother → myself.
• Hence, the woman is the mother of the
man.

said, "He is the only son of the only child of
my grandfather." How Reena is related to that
boy?

• Explanation:
• The boy in the photograph is the only son
of Reena's grandfather's only son; i.e., the
boy is the only son of Reena's father.
• Hence, the boy is the brother of Reena or
Reena is the sister of the boy.

• If A is the brother of B; B is the sister of C; and
C is the father of D, how D is related to A?

• Answer: Option D
Explanation:
If D is Male, the answer is Nephew.
If D is Female, the answer is Niece.
As the sex of D is not known, hence, the relation
between D and A cannot be determined.
Note:
Niece - A daughter of one's brother or sister, or of
one's brother-in-law or sister-in-law.
Nephew - A son of one's brother or sister, or of one's
brother-in-law or sister-in-law.

• Introducing a boy, a girl said, "He is the son of
the only daughter of the father of my uncle."
How is the boy related to the girl?

Answer: Option A

Explanation:
The father of the boy's uncle → the
grandfather of the boy and daughter of the
grandfather → sister of father.

How is the person related to Deepak?

Explanation:
Father of Deepak's daughter's father → Deepak's
father.
Hence, the person in the brother of Deepak's father.

How Nalni is related to Gopi?

• In these type of questions, mutual blood
relations of more than two persons are
mentioned. You are required to analyze the
given information, work out a family tree and
then answer the given questions.

• A and B are married couple. X and Y are
brothers. X is the brother of A. How is Y
related to B ?
(a) Brother-in-Law

• A and B are husband and wife. Since X and Y
are brothers, and X is the brother of A, Y is
also the brother of A. Thus, Y is the brother-in-
law of B.
• Hence, the answer is (a).
Question 10
• A is B's sister. C is B's mother. D is C's father. E
is D's mother. Then, how is A related to D ?

(a) Grandmother
(b) Grandfather
(c) Daughter
(d) Grand daughter
Solution
• A is the sister of B and B is the daughter of C.
So, A is the daughter of C. Also, D is the father
of C.
So, A is the granddaughter of D.
Hence, answer is D.
Question 11
• Neelam, who is Deepak's daughter, says to
Deepika, "Your mother Rekha is the younger
sister of my father who is the third child of
Ramlal." How is Ramlal related to Deepika ?
(a) Uncle
(b) Father
(c) Grandfather
(d) Father-in-Law
Solution
• Neelam's father is Deepak. Deepika's mother
is Rekha. Deepak is the third child of Ramlal.
So, Deepak's younger sister Rekha is the
daughter of Ramlal. So. Ramlal is father of
Rekha and grandfather of her daughter
Deepika.
• Hence, answer is C.
3. Coded Relations
• In such questions, the relationships are
represented by certain specific codes or
symbols such as +, -, *, $, @, %, # etc. You are
required to analyze some given codes to
determine the relationship between a set of
persons.
Question 12
• P + Q means P is the brother of Q; P - Q means P is
the mother of Q and P x Q means P is the sister of Q.
Which of the following means M is the maternal
uncle of R ?
(a) M + K + R
(b) M - R + K
(c) M + K - R
(d) M + K x R

Solution
• M is the maternal uncle of R means M is the brother
of the mother (say K) of R i.e. N + K - R .
• Hence, answer is C.

• If A + B means A is the sister of B; A - B means A is
the brother of B; A x B means A is the daughter of B,

E is the maternal uncle of D ?

• Clearly, E is the maternal uncle of D means D
is the daughter of the sister of E i.e.
D x F + E.
• Hence, the answer is (c).

• If M x N means M is the daughter of N;
M + N means M is the father of N;
M % N means M is the mother of N and
M - N means M is the brother of N
then P % Q + R - T x K indicates which relation of P to
K?
A. Daughter-in-law

• Answer: Option D
• Explanation:
• P % Q → P is the mother of Q
• Q + R → Q is the father of R
• R - T → R is the brother of T

• T x K → T is the daughter of K
• Hence, → Q is the husband of K.
• Therefore, P is the mother-in-law of K.
