There are so many definitions of the dance and folk dance. It may be defined based
on how it is performed or based on its origin.
Dance is a successive group of rhythmical steps bodily motion, or both,
                  usually set to music.
Dance as an art is a conduit of expression and communication.
Folk dance is a form of dance developed by a group of people of a certain

                  region.
   Essential Components of Dance
                   The movement
                   The music
                   The formations and positions
Why do we need to know the movements in dancing?
Since the early period of time, people do move and they use it as their
means of communication. Since movement is part of human activities, it is
essential to dancing because dancing requires movements and we dance for
the purpose of celebrating good harvest, worship, wedding, courtship, war,
               and others.
The following are the types of movements.
      1. Locomotor Movements – are the movements that travel through space from one
           position to another.
           a. Walk – transfer of weight from one foot to another though continuous
               movements.
           b. Run – a movement like walking but in a faster pace expect the body leaves
               the ground in weight transfer.
           c. Leap – a transfer of weight from one foot to another by springing and
landing on the ball of the foot and heel down while bending the knee to
               absorb the shock.
           d. Jump – a transfer of weight through springing of both feet into the air and
               landing on both feet.
           e. Hop – a transfer of weight by springing from one foot and landing on the
               same foot.
           f. Gallop – a movement forward, knee action and heel leading.

            h. Skip – a transfer using step hop, alternately.
       2. Non-locomotor Movements or Axial Movement – are movements which does
            not require travel.
            a. Stretch – the extension of the parts of the body using the joints in vertical or
                horizontal position.
            b. Bend – is bringing two adjacent body parts together to meet at the centre.
            c. Swing – arching or circling around in a stationary base.
            d. Twist – rotating parts of the body around an axis.
   Basic Skills needed in Dancing
Basic or fundamental formations, positions, and skills are required in every
activity that we do. It is the first thing that one should know before engaging in more
complicated activities. Since basic information and skills are necessary, we are going to
look to the basics in terms of dancing.

   Basic Dance Formations
Dance steps are executed through rhythmic patterns and sets of melodies in
music. It is necessary for a particular dance to have sets of rhythm and melodic pattern to
make dancing more meaning and graceful to perform.

Music is essential in dancing since dancing has its time
signature to be followed in the duration of the dance. We can
identify certain musical meter through reading its note in a
measure. These are the following types of notes and their
corresponding values which are essential in interpreting literature

                    Pangalay: Sulu’s Grand Wedding Dance
Dance can be an identifying mark of one’s local culture and
tradition. It helps in understanding certain communities, their folkways,
the way they live their lives during the early years, and how they have
preserved it to the present era.
What is Pangalay? How has this dance become notable in Sulu?
Pangalay is one of the most popular folk dances in Sulu. It is performed
during weddings and other grand social affairs in Mindanao particularly in
Sulu. Since wedding celebration is one of the most anticipated events among
Muslims, they have made some preparations in their wedding ceremonies like
dancing the Pangalay. Among the rich families in Mindanao, this celebration
lasts for several days or even weeks depending on the financial capability of
the families of the bride and the groom and the agreement of each family.
Well known dancers are hired to perform the dance while the feast is on-going
using their traditional instruments like kulintangan, gabbang, agong, and others.
The dancers wear typical Joloano costumes. Janggays are also used by the expert
dancers as their extended metal finger nails. Sometimes the rich family use gold in their
   janggays.
How is the Pangalay set to music?
The music used in Pangalay can be played as many as necessary. The counting in
each step pattern in the dance literature is one, two, or one and two to a measure.
Standing at the center of the room is the formation set to dancers facing the audience. No

                          Sua-ko-Sua: A Courtship Dance
Just like the Pangalay, one of the most sought after dances of
Mindanao during cultural activities is Sua-ko-Sua. It is a type of dance that
also displays the cultural value of courtship the Filipino way. Since folk
dancing is one of the activities that we are fond of performing and
watching, we Filipinos preserve this heritage inherited from our ancestors. Our great
love for the customs that we have, made us aware that we need to inculcate these values
   and maintain it for prosperity.
What is Sua-ko-Sua? How will you describe it?
Sua-ko-Sua is a dance from Jolo, Sulu which literally means “a small
orange plant” or “my pomelo tree”. It is a lowland Muslim courtship dance
of the Tausugs usually accompanied by a song.
The Sua-ko-Sua dance of today is modernized and modified according to
the old generation of the Moros. However, some parts still have the distinct
              characteristics of Moro dances.
The dancers may sing as they perform the dance. Natives perform it in
repetition as many times as they want until they decide to end the
   performance.
   Costume
The dancers use typical Joloano costume with an open fan in each hand.
   Music
Divided into four parts: A, B, C, and D and count one, two to a measure.
   Formation
It is a dance for a couple but an unlimited number of participants are allowed to
join the dance. The dancers hold the open fans and partners stand opposite each other
about eight feet apart, the girl at the right side of the partner while facing the audience.

Alay is a dance performed as an offering to special guests as well
as a welcome gesture or as a token of gratitude. In this folk dance, the girl
wears balintawak with tapis, a soft panuelo around the neck or over one shoulder and
corcho; while boys wear barong tagalog, white or colored trousers, and tsinelas.
Music is divided into three parts; A, B, and C and counted one, two three to a
measure. The dancers are arranged by partners standing opposite each other about six
feet apart and when facing the audience, the girls stand at the right side of the partner.
One or more number of pairs may take part in this dance.
