Sports has reshaped the way people interact with one another. It teaches about
discipline, camaraderie, and sportsmanship. All these benefits help build people’s character and develop their
relationships with others.
Sports is popular in the Philippines because Filipinos simply enjoy playing theses sports or have fun
watching how athletes compete.
Team sport is a game consisting of more than two players at a time. The main goal of the team is to win,
so cooperation is required. It develops not only the skills of the person but also his total personality. Team
members set goals, make decisions, communicate, manage conflict, and solve problems in a supportive trusting
atmosphere in order to accomplish their objectives.

LECTURE 1- WHAT TO KNOW

FUTSAL
What is the nature and background of Futsal?

Futsal started in 1930 in Montevido, Uruguay by Juan Carlos Ceriani who invented a five-a-side form of
soccer for youth competition in YMCAs. The game is played on a space with the size like that of a basketball
court. This can be played indoors or outdoors.
The FUTSAL is the international name used for the game. It is derived from the Portuguese word
FUTbol or FUTebol which means soccer, and the French or Spanish word Salon or SAla which means indoor.
Zico, Bebeto, Pele, Socrates, and other Brazilian football superstars advanced their skills in playing
Futsal. While Brazil remains to be the Futsal center of the world, the game is now played, under the patronage of
FIFA, throughout the world, from Europe, North America, South America, Carribean, Asia, Africa and Oceania.

What is Futsal in the Philippines?

Futsal, as a variant of Football, was introduced in the Philippines by the Philippine Football Federation
(PFF). In 2001, the Philippine Futsal team competed in the 2001ASEAN Football Futsal Championship. Later, it

Mr. Esmaeil Sedigh, the Futsal head under the Philippine Football Federation, initiated the extensive
development and promotion of futsal in the Philippines. He created numerous programs and tournaments such
as the Philippine Futsal League (PFL). He also organized tournaments mandated by the Philippine Sports
Commission (PSC), the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), and the Department of Education (DepEd). Some
of these tournaments are Philippine National Games, Batang Pinoy, Youth Games, and the recent 2015 Palarong
Pambansa, in which futsal was played as a Demo Sport. At present, futsal has been continuously developed
