SALT GEL
VISCOSIFIER
SALT GEL is a hydrous, magnesium silicate clay (attapulgite) that is utilized in water-based drilling
fluids where the salinity exceeds 35,000 mg/L.
FEATURES AND BENEFITS:
• Primarily used to provide viscosity in high salinity, water-based drilling fluids.
• Is a cost-effective viscosifier for use in salt water and salt saturated drilling fluids.
• Is very effective when utilized in lost circulation pills in zones of high porosity.
• Is not affected by prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
• Will exhibit stable rheology under high temperature conditions.
RECOMMENDED TREATMENT: 45 – 75 kg/m³ (typically) or as needed to increase viscosity to
desired level.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES:
Appearance: Grey-tan powder
Specific Gravity: > 1.0 @ 20°C
Solubility: Insoluble
pH: 8.0 - 9.5
Bulk Density: 368 - 880 kg/m³
MIXING/HANDLING:
Mix through a mixing hopper; yields more effectively when subjected to high shear conditions. Refer to the
SDS for specific precautions and handling requirements.
