Product Bulletin Id-Bond L: Typical Physical Properties

ID-BOND L is an anionic, water-soluble polymer that is used to stabilize shales by encapsulating clay particles and inhibiting their dispersion. It is supplied as an oil emulsion and works by attaching to positively charged clay edges to bind particles together. This improves wellbore stability by slowing water penetration and easing cuttings removal. ID-BOND L is added regularly while drilling shale sections at concentrations of 1 to 5 lb/bbl initially and 0.25 to 0.5 lb/bbl in filtrate, to treat cuttings and wellbore walls.

PRODUCT BULLETIN

ID-BOND L
ID-BOND L shale inhibitor is a water-soluble encapsulating polymer that is used to stabilize hydratable and
dispersible shales. It is supplied as an oil emulsion for ease of mixing. Partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide of
high molecular weight soluble in fresh water and string brines.

Application

ID-BOND L shale inhibitor is an encapsulating polymer that is normally used in conjunction with potassium
chloride to provide a high degree of shale inhibition. The polymer, being anionic, attaches itself to the
positively charged edges of clay platelets thus binding the particle together. This inhibits cuttings dispersion,
leading to easy and effective solids removal. The adsorbed polymer also slows down water penetration into
shales, thus improving wellbore stability. ID-BOND L Shale Inhibitor is not adversely affected by common
contaminants. However, simultaneous high temperature/high-pH conditions should be avoided, as polymer
hydrolysis can release traces of ammonia gas. ID-BOND L Shale Inhibitor is added as a treatment for the
cuttings and the sides of the wellbore, and should be added on a regular basis while drilling shale sections. An
initial concentration of 1 to 5 lb/bbl (2.9 to 14.3 kg/m³) is recommended. The concentration of the product in
the filtrate is normally maintained in excess between 0.25 to 0.5 lb/bbl (0.7 to 1.4 kg/m3).

Advantages
• Provides improved shale stabilization
• Liquid product for easy mixing and rapid yield
• Low pour point for easy use in cold climates
• Can be used to viscosify clear-water, low-solids drilling fluids

Toxicity and Handling
