BODIAM CASTLE

If you go sightseeing in the south of England, you must not miss one of the most beautiful
medieval castles ever built - Bodiam Castle. Bodiam is everyone's fairytale castle. Although time
and man's hand have ruined the inside, its outer walls and towers stand as they did when
completed in 1388. Like many medieval castles, Bodiam was both the fortress and the residence
of a lord - in this case Sir Edward Dalyngrigge, a knight.
Sir Edward's castle was designed in the most up-to-date style. Its layout was simple but
effective. It had a rectangular shape and there was a tower at each of the four corners. It was
surrounded by a moat, a deep pool filled with water protecting the castle from attackers. The trees
around the moat had to be cut up to avoid giving cover to an attacker. The only way leading inside
the castle was through a wooden bridge over the moat.
Bodiam Castle looked splendid. Its size was impressive. It was probably one of the largest
buildings in Sussex in the late fourteenth century. Perhaps as many as one thousand men worked
on its construction and they came from all over England. They designed and built Bodiam's
rooms, halls, chapels and many kitchens which are now open to the public.
Bodiam was home to many residents over the years. Although built for war, life there was
usually peaceful because Bodiam was never attacked. It was captured twice without resistance, in
both cases by other Englishmen. In 1916, it was purchased by Lord Curzon, who took good care
of its ruins, carrying out the most necessary repairs. In 1925, he asked the National Trust to look
after the castle and its beautiful countryside.

EAT YOUR WAY TO GOOD HEALTH

1_______________________________________
We all know that a varied diet with the right combination of protein, carbohydrates
and fresh fruit and vegetables is necessary for good health.

2_______________________________________

However, modern living and a busy lifestyle often mean that many of us don't have
time to eat proper well-balanced meals. We seem to be relying too much on 'fast foods'
to match our fast lives. The problem with these foods though is that they are high in bad
things like fat and calories, but low in the good things like vitamins and minerals. If you
are only eating this sort of 'junk' food, then you've got a poor diet.

3_______________________________________

A poor diet can lead to lots of health problems. These include allergies and tiredness
or much more serious illnesses such as cancer and heart disease. The additives which are
put in processed foods can also cause illness. Additives are used to add colour, flavour
and long life to foods, but they can be quite harmful if you eat too many of them.

4_______________________________________

If you eat raw and organic foods, you will be much healthier. Therefore, it makes
sense to eat organically grown fruit and vegetables whenever you can. Try to stop drink-
ing coffee and stop using sugar, too. Also, it is good idea to take vitamin and mineral
tablets if you know your diet is not as healthy as it should be.

5_______________________________________

A good time to think about healthy eating is when you are shopping, read the list of
ingredients on food packets to find out if there are a lot of additives so you can avoid
them. Foods that contain a lot of additives include: processed meats, soft drinks, tinned
fruit, margarine and biscuits.

6_______________________________________

All in all, a few simple changes to your diet can make a big difference to your health.
Eat the right things and you can eat your way to good health.

THE NEWS IN PICTURES

The filming and photography in news programmes are very important in bringing the
stories to life and making us realise how events affect people. But the traditional
techniques of filming are slowly changing and not everyone is happy with this.
Viewers have recently complained that the camerawork on news programmes, while
very artistic and clever, is more suited to feature films and documentaries. Apparently
many of us are distracted by clever camerawork and our attention is taken away from the
real focus, which is the story.
Several techniques have been criticised. One of them is the 'circling camera'. This is
when the cameraman goes round the person who is talking so that at one point we see the
back of his head. Another technique is when the camera is not held steadily shakes. It
gives the impression of slight panic and is often used in films today.
The BBC insists that the camerawork like this is a sign of artistic and technology
progress and is interesting and attractive, particularly to a younger audience. But how
appropriate is it to have a circling camera when reporting on something as ordinary
interest rates?

THE AMERICAN GOLD RUSH

It all started early in 1848 in California. James W. Marshall was working by the
riverside when he found some small pieces of yellow metal in the water. He showed them
to his boss. It was gold. The two men tried to keep a secret but without success. Soon, the
magic word 'gold' was repeated all around the world. Everybody wanted to go to
California to get rich. Thousands of people started to rush to the golden river by horse, by
ship and even on foot. Night after night, a few more new towns appeared along the river.
Some people brought tents to live in while others built wooden houses called huts.
Looking for gold was hard work and many people were disappointed. Only the lucky ones
found gold - sometimes up to $2,000 in one day. It is not surprising that many small
hotels, restaurants and bars opened in these new towns. Their owners made fortunes
providing services to people who arrived in a town in search of gold! 1. By the end of
1850, the California Gold Rush was over. However, about forty-seven years later gold
was discovered again, this time in Canada. Once more, over a thousand people left their
homes and families to look for a better future. Today, at the original site of the California
Gold Rush, near Sacramento, visitors can still try their luck with finding the yellow pieces
of metal in the river. The old buildings have been redecorated aid tourists can experience
the life of the old days. Many of them are sure that they can find at least a small bit of
gold.

USE YOUR MIND

How many tablets do you take? We all take tablets for headaches and other illnesses.
But are they really necessary? The big drug companies make the drugs and tablets that
we buy to fight our health problems. But could it be possible that many of these drug and
tablets are only good for the bank balances of the drug companies and that there are
better ways for us to get over our health problems? According to some experts, should
use the power of our minds.
Since the 1950s there have been experiments using placebos. Placebos are table which
do not have an effect on the body, so they shouldn't be able to make us better. In the
experiments some patients in the group receive real drugs for a health problem, while
others receive the placebo. No one knows who has the real drug or who has the placebo.
In a significant number of these experiments the patients who haven't received the real
drug get better! People think this is perhaps because they are thinking positively and
believe they will get better - so they do!

ANISH KAPOOR

As a sculptor, I need a large studio space and four assistants to help me, so I can't
really work from home. When I get to my studio, I change into some old work clothes.
None of them are very clean because of the job I do. The studio even has a washing ma-
chine because our clothes smell so bad a lot of the time. I usually prefer the studio to be
quiet, but I sometimes listen to extremely loud opera music. That's when my assistants
think I'm being most creative.
I'm doing some work in Naples at the moment so I have to travel to Italy or some other
country at least once a week. Back in England, lunch in the studio is very simple and at
1:30 I always stop for 45 minutes to read. I particularly enjoy philosophy and poetry. My
family and I only go out once a week. I don't really have time to cook during the week,
but at the weekend or when I'm on holiday, I take whatever's in the fridge and create
something interesting.
At the end of the day I turn on the TV and watch a news programme or documentary
until 11 pm. As soon as I get into bed, I fall asleep. At the side of my bed I have a
notebook and sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and write things down. A
sculptor needs ideas and I never know when they'll come to me so I need to be ready.

LIFE ON MARS?
In the UK people celebrate the first day of April by playing jokes on each other, and
sometimes TV programmes and newspapers join in the fun! There have been some very
clever jokes over the years, which people believe because they are in the paper or on TV.
One that I remember vividly from when I was young was on a programme called To-
morrow's World. This programme looked at unusual scientific inventions and stories. It
was on every week, and was very popular. Well, this particular 1 April the programme
started off looking at the number of 'missing people' in Britain over the last year. Then
they went on to 'prove' that the USA and Russia were starting a colony on the planet Mars
and this was where all these people had gone! They showed photographs of the planet
with heat rising from the ground. Apparently the people were living under the ground in
specially designed homes.

ROBIN HOOD

The story of Robin Hood, the most popular English folk hero of all times, has reached
every corner of the Earth. There are many versions of this well-known tale which about
600 years old. Everybody knows Robin's friends (Little John, Brother Tuck, Will Scarlet)
and the famous Sherwood Forest - Robin Hood's home and the place where many of his
adventures took place. In other countries there are similar stories such William Tell in
Switzerland, El Cid in Spain or Janosik in Poland, but only Robin Ho has become an
'international' hero.
Unfortunately, there is almost no evidence that Robin Hood really existed. Thirteenth-
century ballads, fourteenth-century chronicles, a sixteenth-century History Great Britain,
all talk about Robin Hood. However, none of them tells us about t sources they used. In
the 1800s and 1900s, historians found two Robin Hoods who lived in the fourteenth
century. One of them was even a King Edward IPs servant. Later other historians found
several different Hoods living in different parts of England Robin was a popular Christian
name and Hood was a fairly common surname. It seems that by 1337, the story of Robin
Hood was well-established. Most probably, he lived around the year 1200.
Today, the legend of Robin Hood has turned Nottinghamshire into a large tourist'
attraction. In the centre of Nottingham there is Nottingham Castle. Parts of it still recall
the time of Robin Hood. Sherwood Forest has an excellent visitors' centre w' an attractive
display and shop, and some very pleasant walks in the nearby fore Edwinstowe church, in

I have started to look at my kitchen in a new way after a recent visit from Michael
Fenton. The 29-year-old personal trainer has developed an exercise programme for people
who haven't got time to go to the gym. Michael explained to me, as I was trying to serve
the children's breakfast and wash up at the same time, that it's just a question of imagina-
tion. He decided to use my kitchen as a gym, as this is where I spend most of my time.
We started with a warm-up which involved jogging around the kitchen while cleaning
up. Then we lifted lemonade bottles to exercise our arms. This was followed by leg
exercises performed while holding on to a chair. After my twenty-minute workout I felt
exhausted but very proud of myself. Not only had I exercised, I'd also tidied up the
kitchen!

COMMUNITY POLICE

There is a new type of police officer on our country roads these days. They're not real
police officers. They are members of the public and they are called “community police”
The idea is that they help the police control the speed of motorists through their villages.
These people wear yellow jackets and stand beside the road with a traffic gun pointed
at the cars to find out the speed. This is not official. There is no camera and the people
have to note down the numbers of the cars that are going too fast. This information is then
passed on to the real police who send a warning letter to the owner of the car.
Not everyone is happy with this scheme! "It's not a good system," says Mark Good
from one of the main motoring organisations. "Mistakes often happen. The people take
down the wrong numbers! The information is just not reliable. It's never a good idea to get
the public to do the police's job. I think it's ridiculous."
But, as the villagers say, speeding is a huge problem, particularly in the countryside.
There aren't enough traffic police and dangerous motorists need to be stopped. So, what
do you think?

A are joining the police force
B are fighting the police

HIGH FLIER

Alistair Eve is a man with an unusual job, to say the least! He is a human cannonball.
Twice a day he is fired from a cannon, normally used in battles, and is thrown through the
air at nearly 80 kilometres per hour. He's a real crowd-pleaser, but it's not as easy as it
looks. Alistair admits that it's a tough job that requires a lot of concentration and perfect
timing.
Alistair comes from a long line of circus performers and grew up under the Big Top. His
father was a clown, bringing tears of laughter to generations of children and his mother
was a daring trapeze artist. Naturally, Alistair wanted to keep up the tradition and follow
in his family's footsteps. Like his mum, he had always had a passion for danger and
decided that human cannonball was the career for him.
To do his act, Alistair climbs into the cannon and carefully positions himself. Then air
is pumped inside the barrel at high pressure. As he flies into mid-air he has to keep his
body as tight as possible and land on his back in the safety net. It's all over in a mat ter of
seconds, but getting it right takes years of training and a high level of skill.
In over a decade of performing Alistair has never had a serious accident. "Just a few
bumps and bruises," he says, laughing. Still, after seeing how fast and high he goes, I
intend to keep my feel firmly on the ground.

THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA

The Great Wall of China is the only man-made construction that can be seen from
space. It is 6,000 kilometres long. It runs along China's northern border and has an
unusual shape. It looks as if its architects did not have any specific plans. It looks like a
snake or a long road. Nobody knows why its shape is like this but legend states that it was
built to imitate the movements of a dragon - a popular religious symbol in China. The
section of the Wall visited by most tourists is at Badaling Pass near Peking. Here, the
building material is grey granite blocks, 6 metres high. On both sides of its roof, there are
low walls which protect you from falling off the Wall. In the middle, there is a road which
is wide enough for five horses running side by side. Other sections of the Great Wall are
built of various materials, often of poor quality, for example of wood or sand depending
on whether the wall crossed deserts, plains or the country. The people who were forced to
build the Great Wall were often those who could not pay their taxes, prisoners of war and
criminals. There were about one million slaves working on the Wall. They lived in poor
conditions, in places called work camps. They worked without clothes during the summer
and they wore only animal skins in the winter. They often died of disease and hunger.
Those who died were often buried in its foundations, making the Wall the 'world's longest
cemetery'. There are still many of the original 25,000 towers left. They are about 12
metres high and the distance between two neighbouring towers is over 200 metres. The
army usually lived these towers. In the period of the Wall's glory almost a million men
stayed there. Today the Great Wall is one of the China's tourist attractions. Where else in
the world can you see something built by man over twenty-two centuries ago?

I'VE BEEN HERE BEFORE!

It's a strange sensation. A new place that seems familiar or an event that you're sure has
happened before. How many of us have had this experience? Apparently over 70 It's
called deja. vu and according to the experts it's not something new but has been happening
to people for hundreds of years!
So, what explanations are there for this strange feeling that is both confusing and
uncomfortable? Some scientists think it is related to dreams and memory. It appears that
although the majority of us cannot recall our dreams, we actually store the memory of
dreams in our long-term memory. This deep memory can come back sometimes when we
are in a similar situation and makes us think that we have done this before.
However, as usual, not all experts agree. Those who believe in reincarnation - the idea
that we have all lived before - say that these feelings are fragments of memories from
previous lives. But, whatever the reason for deja vu, one thing it does show is how
complicated and amazing our brains are and that we are a long way from understanding
completely how the brain, and in particular, how our memories work.

_____1. Deja vu is a feeling that something familiar is unfamiliar.

_____2. People have been experiencing deja vu for the last hundred years.

TIME FOR COFFEE

The story of coffee drinking is one of the greatest and most fascinating in history. Millions
of coffee drinkers worldwide cannot imagine their life without a cup of aromatic coffee in the
morning. Coffee is a natural stimulant which makes us feel more awake, alert and ready to
concentrate.

The qualities of mocha, as coffee was once known, were

first discovered in Ethiopia more than one thousand years ago.
However, it was not Africans but Turks and Arabs who actively
encouraged coffee drinking. The habit of coffee drinking
quickly spread throughout the Arab world, where coffee won a
reputation as the wine of Islam.

Coffee was first grown in Yemen. It was popular with

Turks who served the drink to visiting Italian merchants. In
1615, traders from Venice brought coffee to Europe, where it
was originally sold as a medicine. By the end of the sixteenth
century coffee was drunk in major European cities from Paris
to London. Now, around the world there are different methods
of preparing coffee, for example, in Turkey coffee is
traditionally boiled three times while Italians are the inventors
of espresso and cappuccino.

We drink coffee because of its aroma, taste and

stimulating effect. However, extensive consumption of coffee
may be harmful to our health, for instance, it may increase
one’s blood pressure or make one’s heart beat irregularly.
Fortunately, new brands of coffee have been appearing on the
market recently. As they do not contain substances harmful to
health, many people will not havegive up their coffee-drinking

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

A pale, yellow moon was rising as I was walking home from my friend’s house. We
had spent the evening babysitting her younger sister and had watched two really frighte-
ning horror films on TV.
Imagine my shock when, suddenly, from the distance I heard a loud cry and saw a
strange white form moving towards me at top speed through the air. My mouth opened
but no sound came out. The terror I felt stopped me from screaming for help. I fell to the
ground to escape as I was certain it was a ghost. I kept my eyes tightly shut, in case I
would end up staring into the eyes of a terrible monster.
After a couple of minutes, when I realised that I hadn't been hurt, I carefully opened
my eyes and looked around. It was then that I heard the hooting coming from a nearby
tree. I looked up and saw a large, white owl sitting on a branch, watching me with what
seemed to be a puzzled expression on its face.
I could have kicked myself for being so stupid. It's strange how the mind can play
tricks on you. I promised myself that that was the last time I would go wandering around
late at night after watching horror films!

fifteen now, and although their parents had told them not to go into the sea alone, Clive
considered himself responsible enough to look after his younger sister. The trip went

“I was terrified. I was in the water and I couldn’t see Clive anywhere. Then, I saw

THE GREEN LIGHT

In Australia it is now illegal to use traditional light bulbs. The whole country changing
to low energy bulbs for their lights. This will reduce the amount of energy that each
home uses and will obviously be better for the environment. And Australia is not the
only country doing this. Will your country be next?
So, what are the advantages and disadvantages of using the new low energy bulbs Of
course, the main advantage is for the environment. If all houses in the UK used these
bulbs, the effect on the environment would be the same as taking three quarters of I
million cars off the road! Cost is another advantage. If we changed all the bulbs in our
houses, we could cut our energy bills by fifty per cent!
There are a few disadvantages however. The light that these bulbs give is not exactly
the same as the light from traditional bulbs. It's colder and whiter. Some people don’t
like it very much. Also, the light doesn't come on immediately. After switching on the
light you have to wait a short time. Another disadvantage for some people is that at the
moment you can't make these bulbs give a stronger or weaker light by using a special
switch. But scientists say this will soon be possible.

But if we can help the environment by using these bulbs, are the disadvantages really
such a problem?

_____1. In Australia you can choose which bulbs to use.

A MONSTER OF A FILM

Have you seen any of the first cartoons - Tom and Jerry, Mickey Mouse, and the

come a long way from the traditional animation of those early days. Monster House,

LITTLE BOXES

In recent years there have been many predictions about what our houses will be in
the future. Some experts think we will all live in boxes; others think we may actually
live on the moon or another planet! Two things are clear. We will use power from sun,
wind or sea and computers will control everything in our lives and especially in our
homes.
Every house will have devices to change energy from natural sources into power,
we'll build houses that can use this power efficiently. Computers will open and close
doors to allow people to come in and out and they will make sure the house and
people in it are safe. They will switch on the lights when we go into different rooms
switch on gadgets when we ask them to. They will know when the fridge is empty
order food automatically. They will even tell us who has visited the house while were
out and at what times!
Rooms will be smaller than today but furniture like beds, tables and chairs will
come out of the floors and walls when we want to use them. Again, the computer will
do this for us.
Some experts predict that computers will control the entire world in the future, so
perhaps they might decide to shut us in our little boxes for ever! There's a thought.

THE BEATLES ARE BACK?

At the start of the year 1994, the world received a shocking piece of news: "The
Beatlles are to record again for the first time in 24 years." The band's three remaining
members at that time, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr (without John
Lennon who was murdered in 1980) announced plans to record together.
The three musicians did not want to record only new versions of their old songs. They
were also interested in recording new music. They were going to make a ten-hour special
video-biography to be shown on British television later that year. The new project would
include a lot of unpublished documentaries, interviews and materials from Beatles' private
collections. At the same time a new book about the group was going to appear in the
bookshops. The fans would also have the chance to buy recordings of the live concerts on
five CDs in the music shops.
Fans of the famous four were hoping that this comeback would not run into difficulties.
In the earlier years, The Beatles had a long history of arguments over money and
copyright. This was one of the reasons why the band decided to stop working together ten
years before Lennon's death.
Now that they were returning to the stage, The Beatles' old and new fans expected a
new kind of fascination and excitement. They were hoping that their idols would remind
them of the good old days of rock and roll. Actually, many of them never thought that one
day they would get yet another chance to watch their idols perform again.

TWO DAYS IN PARIS

Paris. What a fantastic city! We arrived at the railway station early on Saturday
morning and we walked to our hotel. It was quite a long way but it was sunny and warm.
The hotel owner was happy to see us and showed us our room. It was amazing. From our
window we could see the River Seine and the famous cathedral, Notre Dame. We stayed
at the hotel for one night and ordered real French food in the restaurant!
Later on Saturday morning we decided to take a boat trip down the Seine and we
passed our hotel! Then we visited an art gallery and the Musee D'Orsay, which was once a
railway station. There are a lot of Monet's paintings there. I love his work.
On Sunday we walked in the park by the Eiffel Tower and, of course, we looked in
some shops! The clothes weren't very expensive but you can buy the same things at home,
and anyway we couldn't put any more clothes in our bags! In the afternoon we walked to
the Sacre Coeur, a beautiful white church on a hill. Nearby there is a place with a lot of
artists. One artist painted a picture of Amy. It's very good and it wasn't expensive. In the
evening, sadly it was time to come home. Paris was lovely and we have some beautiful

The qualities of mocha, as coffee was once known, were first discovered in Ethiopia more
than one thousand years ago. However, it was not Africans but Turks and Arabs who actively
encouraged coffee drinking. The habit of coffee drinking quickly spread throughout the Arab
world, where coffee won a reputation as the wine of Islam.

Coffee was first grown in Yemen. It was popular with Turks who served the drink to
visiting Italian merchants. In 1615, traders from Venice brought coffee to Europe, where it was
originally sold as a medicine. By the end of the sixteenth century coffee was drunk in major
European cities from Paris to London. Now, around the world there are different methods of
preparing coffee, for example, in Turkey coffee is traditionally boiled three times while Italians
are the inventors of espresso and cappuccino.

We drink coffee because of its aroma, taste and stimulating effect. However, extensive
consumption of coffee may be harmful to our health, for instance, it may increase one’s blood
pressure or make one’s heart beat irregularly. Fortunately, new brands of coffee have been
appearing on the market recently. As they do not contain substances harmful to health, many
people will not have give up their coffee-drinking habits.
