Note: This Hot Work Permit covers all activities, however, if the activities are carried out
under confined conditions eg in a workshop as part of business as usual operations the
requirement for a permit is waived but the principles of risk mitigation covered in
Sections 3-5 should be followed and included in a Standard Operation Procedures (SOP)
document.
Overview
'Hot work' means any work which will be carried out near flammable or explosive material and
which creates a significant risk of igniting that material, such as welding carried out near a fuel
tank. Hot work is any process involving grinding, welding, brazing, oxy cutting, heat treatment
or any other similar process that generates heat or continuous streams of sparks. A number of
International Standards provide that a person should hold a hot work permit in order to carry
out such work.
This permit should be completed by the authorised person prior to all hot work.
