DATE: May 2, 2023
SUBJECT: ENGL 2210 Reflection
                                            Introduction:
Within this e-portfolio you will find work related to each of the projects I completed throughout
this course and reflections on each project and the course as a whole. I feel I have gained many
key skills throughout my time in English 2210 and this e-portfolio provides evidence to each of the
skills I have learned. This memo is a reflection of what I’ve learned and how it has prepared me
for the twenty-first century workforce.
ENGL 2210 outlines nine student learning outcomes to be gained through completing three major
projects. Each project included three student learning outcomes that defined an overall purpose
and takeaway for the project. This memo will outline each project and its SLO’s and provide a
brief description as to how it has prepared me for entering the modern-day workforce.
Project One: Resume and Cover Letter
For the first project, I created a resume, cover letter, and application video for a relevant position
in the computer science field. It included three student learning outcomes: visual
communication, reviewing and editing, and production and delivery. Below I have provided a
brief reflection on each of these SLO’s:
SLO 6: Visual Communication
I developed a multimodal visual application via the use of a resume, cover letter, and video. I used
the accepted design conventions for each mode of visual communication, ensuring that each will
be pleasing to the eye, include pertinent information, and be accepted by a wide audience. This
learning outcome will ensure I am successful in communicating information through visual aid
and designs throughout my professional career.
SLO 7: Reviewing and Editing
By participating in a peer review, I listened to feedback from my peers to perform final edits to my
resume and cover letter. I made changes based on peer feedback to ensure that each document
was clear and concise, included the appropriate prose, and was free of spelling and grammar
errors. This learning outcome will prepare me for accepting constructive criticism from peers and
superiors, as well as ensuring that I create content that is well-designed and edited.
SLO 9: Production and Delivery
By creating multiple modes of communicating my qualifications, I have gained key skills in
developing a wider range of content. My resume, cover letter, and application video followed
different design rules and guidelines appropriate to the mode of communication. Each mode
supplemented information that was not included in the other modes, giving a wider range of
qualifications to potential employers. By understanding different design principles for different
modes of communication, I am ensuring my success in reaching wider audiences in my
professional career.
                                 Project Two: Instruction Manual
For the second project, I created an instruction manual and DIY video for knitting a scar to a non-
expert audience. It included three student learning outcomes: project analysis, content
development, and content management. Below I have provided a brief reflection on these SLO’s:
SLO 2: Project Analysis
By creating an instruction manual for a non-expert audience, I learned how to create content that
is accessible to a wider range of people. Identifying the appropriate audience is necessary for
creating documents that reach and is understandable to the intended viewers. Being able to
account for different audiences in a professional setting and tailoring your content to them is
necessary for success in the modern-day workforce.
SLO 3: Content Development
By following the accepted design guidelines of an instruction manual, I further understand how
these conventions impact how documents should be created. I must tailor my content to the
accepted conventions of intended use and purpose of the document, ensuring that it is acceptable
to the general public. Being able to tailor my documents and content to the appropriate
conventions and design principles will be a key skill in my professional career.
SLO 8: Content Management
By including multiple modes of communication (text, video, and graphics), I further understand
how large multimodal documents should be organized and managed. It is easy to get lost in large
documents that include multiple modes of communication, and being able to manage these types
of documents in a clear and concise manner will be beneficial to a successful professional career.
                                   Project Three: Formal Report
For the final project, I created a formal recommendation report on whether AI research should be
paused to formulate regulations and safeguards to a non-expert audience. It included three
student learning outcomes: project planning, organizational design, and written communication.
Below I have provided a brief reflection on each of these SLO’s:
SLO 1: Project Planning
By creating a pitch for my formal report, I ensured that I adequately planned, researched, and
designed a large document. This ensures that I convey my subject and purpose to the appropriate
audience in a clear and concise manner. This is a useful skill to have in the modern-day
workforce, as drafting large documents and reports is necessary for success in any field.
SLO 4: Organizational Design
By including a research methodology, results, and discussion section in my formal report, I have
gained key skills in conducting research and conveying the appropriate information to an
audience of non-experts. First identifying a research question and then outlining a research
methodology in my report ensured that I only included the relevant information, making my
report clearer and more concise. Being able to conduct research following a clearly outlined
methodology is a key skill that is critical to success both in the professional workforce and in
everyday life.
SLO 5: Written Communication
By creating a formal report that is accessible to a non-expert audience, I ensured that I developed
prose that was clear and concise without the use of jargon and overly technical terms. My style of
writing was tailored to the audience and medium so that my research question, subject, purpose,
methodology, results, and conclusion was clear and easy to follow. Tailoring my writing style to
different mediums and audiences, always using clear and responsible prose, will be essential to
my success in any professional field.
                                            Conclusion
Overall, I feel I have met each of the outlined student learning outcomes for ENGL 2210, gaining
key skills I can use throughout my educational and professional career. I am thankful for my time
spent in ENGL 2210 and the knowledge I have gained.
