∙ how to use this Pattern ∙

This pattern is written to accommodate the wide variety of sizes in preemie

babies. This pattern accommodates head circumferences of 8 to 13.5 inches and
lengths of 11 to 20 inches. Using the instructions below, you will choose one of 12
head and body patterns, and one of 6 leg and arm patterns to most closely match
your custom measurements.

1. Select a head pattern based on your desired head circumference.

(For .25-inch measurements, round down.)
2. Select the body pattern matching the head circumference selected in
step one.
3. Select arm and leg patterns with the same color as your head and body
patterns.
4. Using the table on page 4, select your desired length to find the number
of rows needed for each of the four patterns selected in steps 1-3.
5. Using the number of rows found in step 4, add or remove rows in the
designated places marked with an (*) in your patterns.
6. After all 6 pieces are completed with the desired measurements,
proceed to the assembly portion of the pattern.

Please note that each pattern is written with the number of rows needed for the
average height for each head circumference. You will need to alter the number of
rows in your head, body, arm, and leg patterns to achieve your desired length.

If you are missing or do not know one of your baby’s measurements,

simply select the pattern with the color matching the patterns for your
known measurements.

∙ how to use this Pattern ∙
Using the table below, select the desired length of your doll to find the number of rows
needed for your head, body, arm, and leg patterns. Lengths are color coded based on
averages. Your baby’s length may not match the colors for your other patterns. This is
normal. For .25-inch measurements, round down then add 1 row to the body.

For example, the doll pictured throughout the pattern has a head
circumference of 8 inches and a length of 11 inches. To create a pattern
for this doll:
1. Select the 8 in head pattern.
2. Select the Body for 8 in head pattern.
3. Select the red arm and leg patterns.
4. Find the row numbers for an 11-inch doll in the table on page 4 (see
below).
5. Based on the row numbers found in the table (see below), the head
and body patterns did not need modification. The arm and leg
patterns, however, needed 2 rows subtracted from each. The rows
were subtracted from the designated places marked with an (*).

Helpful Tips:
• Print a hard copy of only the required pattern pages to minimize
confusion
• Mark off completed rows on your hard copy or use a row counter
• Measure your pieces as you go to prevent incorrect sizes. The head
should measure 0.5 – 1 inch smaller than your final measurement.

Some notes on weighting your doll proportionately:

1. Stuff and weight your doll’s arms and legs first. Aim for an approximate weight of
2 ounces, 3 ounces, 4 ounces, 5 ounces, 6 ounces, and 7 ounces total for all four
limbs. This will help your doll’s limbs drape and feel more realistic.
2. Next, stuff and weight your doll’s head. The head should weigh approximately 1/3
of the remainder of the doll’s weight.
3. Lastly, stuff the doll’s body with the remainder of the doll’s weight. This should
be approximately 2/3 of the doll’s total weight minus the weight of the limbs.
These are just general guidelines to help realistically distribute your doll’s weight.

For example, the doll pictured throughout the pattern has a weight of 1 pound, 1 ounce.
His 4 limbs weigh 2 ounces total. His head weighs 6 ounces (a little over 1/3 of the
remaining total weight). His body weighs 9 ounces (a little under 2/3 of the total weight
minus the weight of the limbs).

∙ stuffing ∙

-Gather all completed pieces and

materials needed for stuffing and
weighting your doll.
-The list of materials needed can be
found on page 2 of this pattern.
-Lay out the pieces of your doll and
check the length. If your doll is too
short, first add 2 rows to the legs,
then a row to the body, and finally a
row to the head if needed. If your
doll is too long, firmly stuffing the
head and body may shorten the doll
approximately half an inch.

*While this step is optional, it is

highly encouraged as an extra
precaution. *
-Cut a piece of skin colored
pantyhose to approximately 1 in
longer than each of your 6 doll
pieces.
-Cutting two pieces for the head and
body is, again, optional, but this
makes it less likely that any shiny
BBs will be seen through your
pieces.
-Toe pieces work best for the head
and body, but do not work well in
the arms and legs.

38
∙ stuffing ∙

-Starting with a leg, tie a knot in the end of the

pantyhose and pull it tight over a crochet hook or
stuffing tool, as pictured.
- Insert your hook into the leg until the knot is in
the “big toe” of the doll. Remove the hook
without moving the pantyhose.

-Fold any excess pantyhose over the top of the

leg. If you do not have excess pantyhose, your
piece is too short.
-Roll a small handful of Poly-Fil stuffing into a
loose ball. Using a crochet hook or stuffing tool,
push the stuffing into the foot of the doll.
-Firmly stuff the foot, stopping at the ankle. Do
not overstuff. This will cause your stitches to
stretch and your foot to be misshapen.

-Using your thumb and forefingers, pinch the side

and top of the foot to shape, adding or removing
Poly-Fil as necessary.

39
∙ stuffing ∙

-To stuff the remainder of the leg,

add a small amount of loose Poly-Fil
to the leg opening.
-Use your stuffing tool to create a
“nest”. Place a small number of BBs
(2-3 for a small doll, more for a
larger doll) in the center.
-Cover the BBs with another small
amount of stuffing and use your
stuffing tool to push the Poly-Fil and
BBs into the leg.
-Stuff the leg just enough to
maintain its shape.
-Omit BBs when stuffing the knee.

-Stuff the thigh firmly without

overstuffing, using more weight
than in the lower part of the leg.
-The BBs should be concealed within
the Poly-Fil and not visible through
the crocheted stitches.
-Your stuffing should stop 1 or 2
rows below the leg opening.
-Check the weight of your leg and
tie off your pantyhose, cutting off
any extra.
-Repeat for the other leg.
-Check the weight of both legs.

40
∙ stuffing ∙

-Line your arm with pantyhose as you did with the

leg pieces.
-Using a small, loosely rolled ball of Poly-Fil, stuff
the hand.

-Firmly stuff the hand into a ball shape

-or-
-Loosely stuff the hand and pinch into a crescent
shape, as pictured.

-Stuff and weight the forearm just enough to hold

the shape of the arm.
-The arms will require less weight than the legs.
-When you reach the halfway point of the pajama
color, use a very small amount of loose stuffing to
create an elbow. With the yarn tail at the back of
the elbow, use your fingers to bend the arm.
-Very loosely stuff the upper arm, leaving the top
two or three rows unstuffed.

-Check the weight of your arm, tie off the

pantyhose and cut off any excess.
-Repeat for the other arm.
-Check the weight of both arms together.

41
∙ stuffing ∙

-Layer the two pieces of pantyhose together and

insert them into the head with your stuffing tool.
If using a knotted piece of pantyhose, turn the
piece inside out and aim to position the knot at
the top of the head.
-Stuff the head just enough to keep its shape,
filling any dents. Using your stuffing tool or a
finger, create a tunnel in the stuffing without
breaking through to the top of the head.

-Using a funnel, fill the center of the head with

BBs, stopping frequently to check the weight of
the head and to check that the BBs have not
broken through the tunnel to the surface of the
head.
-Use your stuffing tool to push more Poly-fil
between the pantyhose and the original stuffing,
making sure to cover any stray BBs. BBs should
not be visible through the crocheted stitches.

-Check the head circumference, adding or

removing stuffing as necessary. Use a small,
tightly packed ball of Poly-fil to “cap” your tunnel,
covering the BBs.
-Use your hands to shape the head.
-Check the weight of your head and tie off your
pantyhose, cutting off any extra.

42
∙ stuffing ∙

-Line the body with pantyhose and

loosely stuff in the same way as the
head.
-Create a tunnel in the stuffing,
stopping an inch or two above the
bottom of the body.
-Using a funnel, fill the center of the
body with BBs, stopping frequently
to check the weight and to make
sure no BBs have broken free.
-With yellow dolls or larger, it may
help to stuff and weight the bottom
half of the body first, then the top
half of the body separately.

-Use your stuffing tool to push more

Poly-fil between the pantyhose and
the original stuffing, taking care to
fill any dents and cover any BBs that
have broken through.
-Shape the body with your hands.
-Firmly stuff the top several rows of
the body, making sure to cover all
BBs.
-Check the weight of the body, but
do not tie off the pantyhose.

43
∙ stuffing ∙

-Check the weight of all the pieces

together.
-Add or remove weight from the
body, as necessary.
-Tie off the body, cutting off any
extra pantyhose.

-Check the length of your doll,

adding or subtracting rows to the
legs first, then body, then head if
necessary.
-For dolls less than a half an inch too
long or too short, shaping and
manipulating the pieces may be
enough to reach the proper length
without modifying the number of
rows.

44
∙ Assembly ∙

-Using the tail on the body, attach

the head to the body.
-Insert your yarn needle into the
first stitch on the body from the
outside to the inside.
-Insert your yarn needle into the
first stitch on the head from the
inside to the outside.
-Repeat around the head, pulling
tight every few stitches.
-Make sure not to pull too tightly
and break your tail!

-After the final stitch, insert your

needle into the first stitches of the
body and head.
-Tie off with a tight knot, taking care
not to break the yarn.
-Thread the tail back into the head
to secure. This should also pull your
knot to the inside of the doll. Cut
off any excess tail.

45
∙ Assembly ∙

-Lay the doll down with the knot on

the neck facing against the tabletop.
Find the line of stitches that runs
horizontally through the bottom of
the body.

-Each stitch needed is color coded in

this photo, starting with red and
ending with blue. This is for the
smallest size doll. Each larger leg
pattern will require an additional
stitch after the blue line.

-With the tail from the right leg,

insert your yarn needle into the
stitch on the body marked with the
red line. This is the stitch on the
outside of the second row of the
body. (You may wish to move out
one additional row for green dolls or
larger.)
-With the right leg facing “knee up”,
insert your yarn needle into the
front rightmost stich, then the back
rightmost stich as shown.
-Pull tight.

46
∙ Assembly ∙

-Continue sewing the leg to the body while

matching the stitches as color coded in the photos
on page 46.
-Depending on the size of your doll’s leg, your
final (blue) stitch may be a pair of stitches or a
single stitch.

-Insert your yarn needle into the final (blue) stitch

on the body, pulling the tail through to the first
(red) stitch, as pictured.

-Repeat with the left leg.

-Do not tie the legs off.

47
∙ Assembly ∙

(The doll pictured is facing to the

right.)
-To attach the arms, roll your doll on
it’s side and find the middle 4, 4, 5,
5, 6, or 6 stitches between the 2nd
and 3rd rows from the top of the
body, as pictured.
-With the tail from the right arm,
insert your yarn needle into the first
(red) stitch on the body.
-Insert your yarn needle into the
two stitches closest to the tail on
the arm, as pictured.

-Continue sewing the arm to the

body while matching the stitches as
color coded in the photo above.
-Depending on the size of your arm,
the final (blue) stitch may be a pair
of stitches, or a single stitch.

48
∙ Assembly ∙

(The doll pictured is facing to the

right)
-Insert your yarn needle into the
final (blue) stitch on the body,
pulling the tail through to the first
(red) stitch, as pictured.

-Repeat with the left arm.

-Do not tie the arms off.

-Check the placement of all 4 limbs.

-Adjust any limbs that are not
centered on the body.
-Tie off all 4 limbs with a tight knot,
drawing the tail back into the limb.
This will pull your knot to the inside
of the body.

49
∙ Assembly ∙

-With the doll face up, insert your yarn needle

into the 2 stitches in the center of the face, 1 or 2
rows below the middle row, as pictured. Green
dolls and larger look best with 3 stitches for the
nose. Leave a 2-inch tail for tying.
-Using approximately 8 inches of skin tone yarn,
overlap several stitches to achieve your preferred
nose size.

-Once the nose is the correct size, tie your

working yarn to the tail left in the first step.
-Cut the tails, leaving approximately half an inch.

-Using a small crochet hook, draw the remaining

tails through the head. They should now be
hidden behind the nose.
Use a pair of tweezers or a yarn needle to adjust
the stitches of the nose as needed.

50
∙ Assembly ∙

-Cut 6-8 inches of black embroidery thread. For

dolls red through yellow, use three strands for
each eye. For dolls green through purple, use the
full 6 strands for each eye.
-To locate the first stitch of the right eye, follow
the right side of the nose up 3 rows, and over one
stitch to your left. This stitch is marked with the 1
and 3 in the photo to the right.
-Leaving a 2-inch tail for tying, follow the numbers
in the photo to the right.

-As above, follow the numbers in the photo to the

right.

-As above, follow the numbers in the photo to the

right.

∙ Assembly ∙

-Repeat with the left eye.

-Tie the tails for each eye into a light
knot without pulling the eye too
tightly in the process.
-Trim the excess tails, leaving
approximately half an inch.

-Using your yarn needle, thread the

remaining tails into the center of
the head, behind the pantyhose.
-A smaller, metal embroidery needle
works best here, but is not
necessary
-Repeat for the left eye
