Read this before you start for helpful hints
For this pattern, you will need to work in both continuous rounds and joined rounds.

You can use felt for the eyes for a more finished/professional look, I chose to use yarn since I didn’t have
any felt on hand.

Stitch the decorations on Sherb’s sweater before stuffing the upper body and sewing on the head. I
waited until after and it turned out to be a bit difficult.

Feet (make 2)
Continuous rounds, starting in White and then transitioning to Smoke. Do not f/o on the
second leg, as we will connect the legs and then continue working the body without
finishing off.

f/o (first leg only). For the second leg,
skip forward to “body”.
Body
Continuous rounds, starting in Smoke (Main color) and transitioning to Pale Grey (for the
sweater)

Continued from making the feet. You will notice a jog from the color switch between the hoof and leg;
to make this less obvious, attach the ch2 to the second leg in the st after the f/o. While working with the
second leg, chain 2 and sc into a stitch on first leg to attach.

1. 12 sc, 2 sc across the ch sts, 12 sc around second leg, 2 sc in other side of ch sts
* Add stitch marker here if you’re using one and move it as you work each round *
2. 12sc, inc, inc, 13sc, inc, inc
3. [sc] around
* Change to Grey Smoke *
4. 6sc, dec, 14sc, dec, 9sc

9. [Dec] around
f/o and leave a tail for sewing

Sew head to body at a slight angle forward. See photos to get the angle correct.
Horns (Make 2)
Work in Joined rounds, starting with white and transitioning back and forth between Pale
Grey and white

12 [3sc, inc] around
f/o and leave long tail for sewing

Hair
Continuous rounds using HDC stitches in Blue Moon .

MAIN PIECE
1. 6mr
2. [Hdc inc] around
3. [1hdc, hdc inc] around
4. 1 sc, sl st. leave remaining st unworked
f/o and leave a long tail for sewing

SMALL PIECES (make 2) (rows)

1. Ch 8, turn
2. Dc in 3rd ch from hook, dc, hdc, sc, sl st
f/o and hide ends
Arms (make 2)
Work in Continuous rounds, starting in White and then changing to Pale Grey

Start with white yarn

1. 6mr and join to first st (6)
2. Ch 1, [sc] around BLO (6)
* Change color to Pale Grey *
3 – 8. [sc] around for 6 rows (6)
f/o and leave a tail for sewing

Sew arms to body.

Ears (make 2)
Work in continuous rounds and smoke for outside of ear. Work in rows and Butterscotch
for inside of ear.

OUTSIDE OF EAR in Smoke

1. 6mr (6)
2. [inc] around (12)
3. [sc] around (12)
f/o with a tail for sewing

INSIDE OF EAR in Butterscotch

1. Ch 5, turn
2. 1sc in 2nd st from hook, sc across
f/o and sew the yellow into the
outside of the ear using Smoke
yarn. Use a small amount of
stuffing if needed to hold shape.
Eyes (make 2)
Work in continuous rounds using white yarn for the large pieces and black yarn for the
small pieces.

You can also use felt for a more “professional” look by cutting out two white circles and two smaller
black circles out of felt and using hot glue to attach together and to the head. I chose to crochet the eyes
because I did not have felt on hand.

LARGE PIECES in white

1. 6mr
2. [inc] in the next 4 st, sl st and f/o
leaving the remaining sts
unworked, and leaving a tail for
sewing.

SMALL PIECES in black

1. 6mr, sl st
f/o and leave a tail for sewing.

Sew the small pieces onto the

large pieces. When you sew them
onto the head, make sure the
black pieces are facing the same
direction so Sherb does not
appear cross-eyed.

Sweater
To make the sweater pop a bit more, we add dimension to each seam on the sweater.

• Ch enough to go around Sherb’s waist (about 30 ch)

o Sew around Sherb’s waist where the Pale Grey meets the Smoke color above his legs.
• Ch enough to go around Sherb’s neck (about 19 ch)
o Sew on the Pale Grey of the sweater just below where the head is attached to the body.
See photos for positioning.
• Ch enough to go around wrists (about 9 ch). Make 2.
o Sew around wrists where the White for the hooves meets the Pale Grey of the sweater.
• With a long white piece of yarn, decorate Sherb’s sweater as desired. See photos for an example
pattern.
At this point, Sherb should have a head and arms sewn to his body. Assemble the remaining pieces in
the following order:

1. Sew hair on head.

a. Start with the big piece just in front of the crown of his head.
b. Sew the two smaller ‘whisps’ of hair slightly poking out below the bottom part of the big
piece (see photos)
2. Sew horns on head and stuff. Position them on the outside and slightly behind the hair. See
photos for correct positioning.
To get the horns to curl:
a. after sewing the horns on the head and before hiding the yarn, anchor the yarn at the
back base of the horn where it meets the head.
b. Draw the yarn up through the inside of the horn and out at about row 6 of the horn (the
top grey stripe)
c. Anchor the yarn around a stitch there and draw the yarn back down through the inside
of the horn back to the base.
d. Pull the yarn super tight and you should notice the horn start to curl down. Anchor the
yarn at the base and tie it tight.
e. Repeat with the other horn, and hide the yarn for each.
3. Sew ears on head. Position them about halfway down the head and directly on opposite sides
from each other, pointing outwards.
4. Sew eyes on head. Position them below the hair with about 4 stitches between them.
5. Embroider mouth on head. Use black yarn to make 3 stitches (line to nose, left side of mouth,
and right side of mouth). See photos.
6. Embroider nose on head. Use pink yarn and make 3 stitches over the same spot to make a nose.
See photos for positioning.
OPTIONAL Donut
Work in Continuous rounds using a Tan colored yarn. Use a dark brown for the chocolate
piece.

BOTTOM PIECE
Leave a long tail before starting (8)
1. Ch 8 (8)
2. sc in first chain, be careful not to twist work. [sc] 7 more times. (16)
3. [inc] around (16)
4. [sc] around
f/o and leave a tail for sewing
TOP PIECE
1. Ch 8
2. Sc in first chain, be careful not to twist work. [sc] 7 more times. (8)
3. [inc] around (8)
f/o (16)
CHOCOLATE
* Using brown yarn (chocolate colored) *
1. Ch 9, turn
2. Hdc in 2nd chain from hook, [hdc] across
3. Ch 1, turn and [hdc] across.
f/o and leave a tail for sewing.
It doesn’t matter which piece is technically on “top” or “bottom”, but for the sake of clarity, call the
donut piece with the long ends the “bottom” piece. Sewing together this donut is pretty complicated,
but following the steps one at a time will hopefully make sense once you get closer to the end.

To assemble:

1. Flip the two donut pieces inside out. The Correct side of the work should now be on the inside.
2. Align the two donut pieces so the starting ch8’s are touching each other. It should look like an
hourglass.
3. Use the beginning yarn in the Bottom piece to sew the two ch8’s together so they are sewn into
that hourglass shape we made in step 2. We are making the middle hole in the donut.
4. Now take the finishing yarn from the Bottom piece and sew the top and bottom of the hourglass
together. This is the outside of the donut. Stuff as you sew. As you sew around the outside of
the donut, you should be able to see the donut shape start to form.
5. Sew the chocolate piece on the top of the donut.
6. Sew the finished donut to Sherb’s hand.
For clarity, I used two separate colors for the photos for the donut. The dark brown is the Bottom and
the tan is the Top. I used the Bottom yarn to sew the pieces together.

Then I took the brown yarn from the “Bottom” piece to sew the outside
of the donut together.
