1 . Welcome to Music! 2-4 min

Have Welcome to Music (1st) playing as students enter your classroom.

Take attendance, if needed.
During your planning time, we strongly recommend that you review the five
assessment items found in the third lesson of this module (lesson 3). This will help
you know which points to emphasize as you go through the module.
Note: The Quaver Curriculum aims to strengthen the bond between teacher and
students. A simple way to facilitate this is through praise. Praise is a strong motivator
for the students to perform well. Praise Certificates covering everything from
courageous performing to most improved and being a great singer to a percussion
prodigy (and more) are available for download under the Worksheets button of this
lesson.

Hint: To get the fastest internet speeds, preview all your screens ahead of time so they are
pre-loaded in your computer and close all open windows except for Quaver.

2 . Make a Circle Song (Lyrics) 4-6 min

Teach the Make a Circle Song by using echo singing.

Invite students to sing the song as they create a circle.
Repeat the song with students seated, inviting them to pat the steady beat.
Ask students their names and sing the name back using sol and mi pitches.
Invite students to echo your singing of their names.

The Make a Circle Song score and lyrics can be downloaded from Worksheets.

3 . The Quaver Five 3-5 min

Ask students if the rules at home and school are the same or different.
Invite students to explain why we have rules at school.
Explain how The Quaver Five pertain to your music room.
Click the on-screen words to see Quaver's movement for each guideline and hear it
sung.
Listen to the pitches and invite class to copy the simple movements and sing along
with each guideline.
If a student breaks a Quaver Five guideline, say out loud, "Quaver Five!" and put your
hand in the air.
Once the students hear this, they should put their hands in the air, stop talking, and
look at you.
Note: The Quaver Five is a keyword because it helps set the tone for class behavior at
the outset of the school year. Remind students throughout the year to use The
Quaver Five when performing in class and in programs for parents. We will help each
other do our best by using kind and helpful words.

4 . Welcome to Music (1st) (Lyrics) 5-7 min

Introduce rhythm stick playing rules and techniques with the class.
Pass out a set of rhythm sticks to each student.
Ask students to stand up and keep the beat as you sing Welcome to Music (1st).
How do individuals choose music to experience? (Essential Question)

Variation: Ask students what style of music this song represents. (basic funk) Ask who likes
this style and briefly discuss reasons for likes or dislikes.

The Welcome to Music (1st) melody is printed at the end of the Lesson Plan. The score and
lyrics can be downloaded from Worksheets.

5 . Music Room Tour 5-8 min

Invite students to follow you around the room.

Show a few classroom instruments, demonstrating how to hold, take care of, and
play them.
Discuss other procedures for the class to follow throughout the year.

6 . Jumpin' Jacks (Lyrics) 5-6 min

Listen to Jumpin' Jacks.

Invite students to perform jumping jacks (verse 1) and running in place (verse 2) to
the steady beat of the song.

Variation: Replay the song track, varying the volume from soft (piano) to loud (forte). Have
students perform smaller jumps during the soft parts and bigger jumps during the loud
parts. Also, without explanation, use the words "soft" and "piano" together and "loud" and
"forte" together (to prepare them for later formal introduction into dynamics).

The Jumpin' Jacks melody is printed at the end of the Lesson Plan. The score and lyrics can
be downloaded from Worksheets.

7 . Welcome to Music (1st) (Lyrics) 3-4 min

Handout rhythm sticks to each student and review rules for playing.
Sing Welcome to Music (1st) to conclude the lesson, inviting students to play along
with the steady beat.

8 . What Did We Learn Today? 3-5 min

Click on the bullet points to highlight and review the learning objectives.

9 . Beat Simon Says 10-12 min

Improve listening skills and ability to keep a steady beat.

Ask the class if they've played "Simon Says" before. Explain this is a beat version of
the game.
Begin tapping a steady beat on a drum and ask students to keep the beat by gently
tapping the top of their head.
Speed up the beat and ask students to move the tapping to their knees.
Invite students to stand and play a short practice game.
With the beat still going, say "Simon says put the beat on your head! Simon says put
the beat on your legs! Put the beat on your shoulders." The students who put the
beat on their shoulders would be out of the game.
Continue practicing the game, then play an elimination round where students sit
out if they make a mistake.

10 . Beat on the Loose 10-12 min

Promote students' ability to keep a steady beat at various speeds.

Invite students to make a circle.

Play Hit It! and ask students to tap the beat using body percussion.
Explain that the class will keep the beat by passing (not throwing) a bean bag
around the circle.
Begin by handing one student the bean bag on the beat, and so on.
Repeat the process by playing Rondo Alla Turca.

Connections (Art): If students attended a ballet or visual arts museum, ask what basic art
elements they might anticipate experiencing (such as form, texture, blend, technical
mastery, and so on. Teacher briefly define each element). Ask how they might use art
elements like these to create an objective assessment by which they could evaluate a
musical work, such as Rondo Alla Turca. (Students could consider the quantity and/or
quality of certain art elements, such as technical mastery and tempo present in, or absent
from this musical work.) If time, ask students to assess Rondo Alla Turca using the two art
elements just mentioned. For example, students might ask "On a scale of 1-10, how
technically accurate was the performance? On a scale of 1-10, how precise was the
tempo?"

11 . 5 Green and Speckled Frogs (Lyrics) 10-12 min

Move to show the steady beat of 5 Green and Speckled Frogs.

Play the track and have students show the steady beat as they listen.
Make it into a game by having the students sit in a circle with one area being the
'log' and 5 'frogs' chosen to jump into the water as the song plays.
Encourage students to sing along with as many words as they can, while continuing
to keep the steady beat.
Choose a different set of 5 'frogs' and repeat the game.

12 . 1st Grade Curriculum Pre-

Assessment
If desired, use this 26-item optional pre-assessment to determine your students' baseline
understanding of the key concepts to be discussed in first grade.

Hand out a Pre-assessment Response Sheet to each student.

Instruct students to select only one letter per item or question.
Read the questions to the class, if so desired.
Use the arrow in the bottom right to advance to the next question.
Note: Allow approximately 25-35 minutes for students to complete this pre-
assessment. The Year-End Assessment is identical to this pre-assessment.

The Pre-Assessment Response Sheet can be downloaded from Worksheets.

13 . Classical Connections - Beat 8-10 min

Classical Connections is a way to introduce and use Classical music throughout the Quaver
curriculum. Each of the pieces in Classical Connections has been selected to help illustrate
the musical concept explored in this module. When appropriate, teachers should
demonstrate or model moves for the students and encourage students when movements
are student led.

Can Can - Demonstrate keeping the beat of this piece on your body. Invite the
students to copy (integrated) where you are placing the beat on your body. Once
students become familiar with the song, ask a student to be the leader for where the
beat should be placed.
Recuerdos de la Alhambra - Ask students to play air guitar on this piece, and strum
(non-locomotor) on the beat.
Symphony 101 - The Clock - Pass out tennis balls or playground balls and ask the
students to bounce (fine motor) them on the beat with this piece.

Variation: Play Can Can again, asking students what thoughts and feelings they experience
as they listen. Invite each student to create a short story based on those thoughts and
feelings. If desired, students could enhance their story by having classroom instruments
played along with the track as they tell their story to the class. For example, Max, the cat is
spying Kip and Pip, twin mice that live under the staircase (triangles, finger cymbals).
Suddenly, the chase is on (drums, tambourines, assorted non-pitched percussion), and so
on.
