There hasn't been a formal, standardised definition of heatwave up to now. However, in general, heatwaves
can be defined as an extreme weather event with extended periods of high temperature. Heatwaves mostly
occur in the summer when an area has high pressure. The system of high pressure moves slowly and might
remain over a region for several days or weeks at a time.
Research indicates that climate change is increasing the likelihood of heatwaves. It is predicted that severe
heatwaves could occur more frequently as greenhouse gas concentrations rise.
Heatwaves are not simply uncomfortable. They can cause diseases and even death, especially among elderly
people, very young children and other vulnerable groups. In addition, long-lasting extreme heatwaves can
harm crops, endanger or kill livestock and raise the risk of wildfires in a forest. They can also cause a
sudden rise in electricity as there is a high demand for air conditioning.
Heatwaves are predicted to increase in frequency and intensity as the Earth's temperature rises. If people do
not take action to adapt, an increase in heat could result in an increase in heat-related illnesses and fatalities.
Therefore, it can be said that increased mortality and illnesses can be a result of even slight increases in
temperatures.
26. The definition of heatwave has been agreed on by researchers.
27. Heatwaves can take place easily in summer.
28. Greenhouse gases can be a reason for frequent heatwaves.
