After that and then As as soon as During When while
It was the last day of our holiday. We’d had to leave the apartment by 10 am, but our flight home wasn’t until 6 pm, so we decided to
spend some time at the beach. We put our suitcases in the car, and went for one last swim! The beach was lovely and peaceful, but
1 we were sunbathing, our hire car was broken into. It was a disaster! Everything was taken. All we had were the
clothes we were wearing, about 20 euros, and, luckily, our passports. Mum went to a bar and called the police. 2
they arrived, we explained what had happened, 3 told them that our flight was in three hours. 4
the police examined the car, we made a list of everything that was in the suitcases and filled out lots of forms. It took ages, but we
managed to get to the airport in time for our flight. Three hours later, we got a taxi. 5 , we were so happy to be
homeback to our house. 6 the car ride home, we chatted happily. However, 7 the taxi drove away, we
realised our problems weren’t over yet. The house keys were in dad’s suitcase.
Write!
Step 1
Here are three exam questions. Choose one to write. Before you start writing, look at steps 2–4.
• ‘An unexpected event.’ Write a short story.
• ‘It had been a nightmare journey.’ Write a short story that ends with these words.
• ‘It was certainly an unusual holiday.’ Write a short story that begins with these words.
Step 2
Write down your ideas. Divide them into:
1 the background to the events.
2 what happened during the main event(s).
3 the consequences (how you felt / the results).
Step 3
Decide which sequencing words and phrases you can use to help organise your story better. Think about their sentence
position. Can you use these words at the beginning of a sentence, in the middle or at the end?
Step 4
Write your story, remembering to use past tenses. Don’t forget to check you have used them correctly when you have finished.
