SurTec® 540
Cobalt-free Quench Additive
For Hot-Dip Galvanizing
Properties
temporary, chromium(VI)-free corrosion protection, free of cobalt
contains trivalent chromium compounds
creates colourless coatings
easy application as additive in the quench tank after galvanizing
avoids zinc corrosion very effectively and protects the hot-dip galvanized surface
before it builds its own natural protection mechanism
long service life, comparable to chromium(VI)-containing products
layer fulfils all requirements of ELV, RoHS and WEEE, when following
the recommended process sequence (see “application”)
Application
SurTec 540 Quench Additive is added directly to the quench after galvanizing.
It is recommended to use deionised water for make-up.
make-up value: 5-10 ml/l
analytical value: 8 ml/l
make-up: Steps for make-up:
For make-up with deionised water:
1. Fill the calculated amount of SurTec 540 Quench Additive
into the working tank.
2. Fill up to the final volume with deionised water.
3. Check the pH-value and adjust it to pH 4.0–4.8 with nitric acid
resp. with caustic soda (10 %), if necessary.
For make-up with tap water:
1. Fill ¾ of the working tank with tap water.
2. Check the pH-value of the make-up tap water: if the pH-value is
above pH 6.5, it needs to be adjusted to pH 6.0-6.5 with nitric acid.
3. Add the calculated amount of SurTec 540 Quench Additive.
4. Fill up to the final volume with tap water.
5. Check the pH-value and adjust it to pH 4.0–4.8 with nitric acid
resp. with caustic soda (10 %), if necessary.
temperature: For best results we recommend a bath temperature of < 50°C.
(If temperature is > 50°C a cooling of the bath will be recommended.)

pH-value: 4.5 (4.0-4.8)
adjust with nitric acid resp. with caustic soda (10 % solution)
application time: 90 s (60-120 s)
tank material: steel tanks with heat- and acid-resistant internal plastic coating
heating: not required
agitation: not required; optional: air agitation
recommended process sequence:
1. hot-dip galvanizing
2. quench with SurTec 540 Quench Additive
3. drying at ambient air
Technical Specification
(at 20°C) Appearance Density (g/ml) pH-value (conc.)
SurTec 540 liquid, green-blue/grey, clear 1.032 (1.02-1.05) approx. 1.0
Maintenance and Analysis
Check the pH-value regularly (e.g. once per shift).
Analyse and adjust the concentration of SurTec 540 regularly. An analytical method for the
photometric determination of zirconium is separately available.
Consumption and Stock Keeping
The consumption depends heavily on the drag-out. To determine the exact amounts of drag-out,
see SurTec Technical Letter 11.
Replenish evaporation or drag-out losses continuously by adding water. Add 8 ml SurTec 540
per 1 litre of added water.
In order to prevent delays in the production process, per 1,000 l bath the following amount
should be kept in stock:
SurTec 540 25 kg
