AS7-C, AS7-D AS7-C/ -D overview

2 AS7-C/ -D overview
This document describes the AS7-C and AS7-D plug-in units. The AS7-C and AS7-D
preprocessing units for multichannel signalling are general purpose peripheral slot
computing plug-in units. The AS7-C and AS7-D plug-in units fulfil various
telecommunications protocols of the Nokia network elements such as SS7, LAPD and
X.25.
In this document the name AS7 is used when no distinction between plug-in unit variant
is needed.
Purpose of the AS7-C and AS7-D units
The AS7 plug-in unit function as a general purpose peripheral slot computing engine with
the necessary hardware to handle 256 HDLC (AS7-C), 512 HDLC (AS7-D), PPP or
transparent (TMA) channels in the Nokia network element. The plug-in unit provides the
hardware required by the DMX operating system and application software such as the
boot memory, SDRAM, interrupt handling, process timing and V.24/V.28 based serial
interfaces for service terminals.
The AS7 unit is connected to the backplane CompactPCI bus.The AS7-D variant also
provides a x1 PCIe port connection through the front panel MiniSAS connector.
The AS7-D plug-in unit can co-exist in the same cartridge with AS7-C or it can also
replace an AS7-C unit. In these cases it must be ensured that the power and cooling
requirements of the AS7-D are met.
The AS7-D cabling scheme is backwards compatible with the AS7-C and new cables are
required only if utilizing the additional PCM interfaces or other new features introduced
by the AS7-D. The serial ports have been moved to backplane connector J5.
Operational environment of the AS7-C and AS7-D
The following figures illustrate the operational environments of the AS7-C and the AS7-D
plug-in units.

Notice that there are two V.24/V.28 based serial interfaces for service terminals to
provide an interface for controlling and monitoring the AS7 plug-in unit.
Data can be transferred between the AS7 and the host processor unit of the same
cartridge via the CompactPCI bus on the backplane. The AS7 is connected to the
CompactPCI bus with an Embedded PCI/PCI Bridge. In addition to the CompactPCI
connection, the unit also has two interrupt lines to the host processor unit connected via
the backplane.
The AS7-C plug-in unit is connected to the GSW0/1 via five (4+1) duplicated 4.096
Mbit/s full duplex PCM line interfaces. The AS7-D plug-in unit is connected to the
GSW0/1 via nine (8+1) duplicated full duplex PCM line interfaces, which can be
configured to 4.096 Mbit/s or 8.192 Mbit/s modes. In addition, AS7-D unit has one x1
PCIe port available in its front panel. This port can be used for a point to point connection
to external PCIe systems like Host Processor unit or an external PCIe Switch. It also
incorporates a non-transparent bridging function.
The AS7 unit gets the +5V, -5V and +3.3V supply voltages through backplane
connectors. V(I/O) pins are used for 3.3V supply.

AS7-C, AS7-D Structure of AS7-C/ -D

4 Structure of AS7-C/ -D

4.1 Mechanical structure

The size of the AS7 PWB is 233.4 x 220 mm and its nominal thickness is 1.6 mm.
The AS7-C unit connects to the backplane with two shielded (P1, P4) and one
non–shielded (P5) 2 mm Hard Metric connectors. The front panel contains two LEDs that
indicate the state of the unit, and it is fastened to the PWB with four M2.5 screws. The
holes for the screws are copper plated to ground the front panel to the PWB. The front
panel has cooling fins and a heat pipe is also connected to it. The other end of the heat
pipe is attached to a heat sink that covers the processor.
The AS7-D unit connects to the backplane with five shielded 2mm Hard Metric
connectors. In the front panel there are two LEDs to indicate the state of the unit. The
front panel is fastened to the PWB with screws. For this fastening the PWB has minimum
of four holes, two holes are to be located near the upper corner and two holes near the
lower corner. These four mandatory holes are copper plated to ground the front panel to
the PWB. There is also a PCIe port connector and the cooling fins with expansion of
30mm.

4.2 Logical structure

The AS7-C unit has a Mobile Celeron processor with an internal speed of 650 MHz and
a 100 MHz front side bus. The processor has 256KB L2 cache integrated on the same
die, running with full processor core frequency. The Mobile Celeron uses the Tualatin
technology (0.13 µs process).
The processor is connected to RadiSys 82600 north bridge. In addition to the front side
bus, the 82600 contains a 33 MHz, 32 bit PCI bus and a 33/66 MHz, 32 bit PCI bus. The
first PCI bus (33 MHz, 32 bit), bus 0, is used as the compatibility PCI bus (the South
bridge is located on this bus).
The following block diagram illustrates the logical structure of the AS7–C.

The AS7-D unit contains an Intel Celeron M ULV 373 processor. The processor has
internal speed of 1.0 GHz and a 400 MHz front side bus. The processor has 512 kB L2
cache integrated on the same die, running with full processor core frequency. The
Celeron M ULV 373 uses the Dothan technology with 0.90 um process and does not
support the Intel SpeedStep technology and, thus, under normal operating conditions
runs only at fixed speed of 1.0 GHz.
The processor is connected to the Front Side Bus (FSB) interface of the Intel 3100. The
Intel 3100 integrates Memory Controller Hub (IMCH) and an I/O Controller Hub (IICH)
functionalities. It also provides one 32-bit, 33 MHz PCI bus interface along with one x8
PCI Express port (PEA) and one x4 PCI Express port (PEB). The x8 port can be split
down to form two x4 or x1 capable ports (PEA0 and PEA1) whereas the x4 port can be
configured as four x1 ports (PEB[0…3]).
The 32-bit, 33 MHz compatibility PCI bus (PCI_BUS1) of the Intel 3100 is used for
interfacing with the DMX Support FPGA (interface to the unit I/O and Boot Flash). The
compatibility PCI bus can have PMC connectors for measurement purposes.
On AS7-D the PEA is split down to provide two separate ports. The PEA0 is used to
connect to the PCIe to PCI Hub providing two of the on board PCI Buses (PCI_BUS2
and PCI_BUS3), whereas the PEA1 is reserved for the front panel PCIe port which is
implemented for future use to provide option for inter board connections. The PEB
provided by the Intel 3100 is not utilized on AS7-D.
The PCI_BUS2 interfaces with the AS7-D FPGA. The PCI/cPCI Bridge interfacing to the
backplane compact PCI bus is also located on the PCI_BUS2. The PCI_BUS3 is
dedicated for interfacing with the Infineon Munich256/512 HDLC controller(s). Also at
least the PCI_BUS3 can have PMC connectors for measurement purposes.

AS7-C, AS7-D Structure of AS7-C/ -D

The AS7-D FPGA, the PCI/cPCI Bridge and the HDLC controller(s) need to be able to
act as bus masters on PCI buses they are connected to. The DMX Support FPGA can
only be target in this application but the design must be done so that the FPGA can be
also a bus master in any future application. This means that REG/GNT pair is reserved
also for the DMX Support FPGA.
The following block diagram illustrates the logical structure of the AS7–D.

Serial Interfaces
The AS7 has two serial terminal interfaces which are connected to the back plane
connector. For AS7-C the connector is identified as P7 for AS7-D as J5.
Compact PCI bus
AS7 is connected to the back plane Compact PCI (cPCI) bus. The AS7-C back plane
connector P1 pin assignment supports 32 bit cPCI bus only, P2 connector is not
assembled. The AS7-D backplane connector J1 and J2 pin assignment and the cPCI
bus interface is designed to provide a 64-bit cPCI bus interface. This is in order to
support future Host CPUs. The current Host CPUs only support 32-bit transactions.
5V signalling is used on CompactPCI bus. However, V(I/O) is connected to 3.3V on the
back plane. V(I/O) pins are used for 3.3V supply. These V(I/O) pins are not used as
specified in CompactPCI Specification.
AS7-D Front Panel PCIe

AS7-C, AS7-D Structure of AS7-C/ -D

The AS7-D provides a x1 PCIexpress (PCIe) interface through the MiniSAS connector J8
at front panel. The x1 PCIe interface operates at 2.5 GT/s and provides maximum data
rate of 2 Gbit/s. The interface uses LVDS differential signaling and the signal pairs are
referenced to the AS7-D signal ground and the nominal impedance of the interface is
100 Ohms. Each lane of a PCIe link has to be AC coupled. For this purpose there are
AC coupling capacitors at the outputs of the transmitters. The PCIe reference clock for
the non-transparent PCIe to PCIe Bridge is provided on the AS7-D. The AS7-D will not
drive the reference clock out to its front panel port.
PCM line interfaces
The AS7-C interfaces with five 4,096 Mbit/s , the AS7-D interfaces nine 4,096/8,192
Mbit/s, serial lines (internal PCM lines) in the back plane. Four (AS7-C) or eight (AS7-D)
of these internal PCM lines (DT/DR) are connected directly to the GSW0/1 and one of
these PCM lines (T/R) are shared with other AS7 plug-in units in the same cartridge so
the termination resistors of this PCM line are not in AS7. The interface logic
multiplex/demultiplex a 4,096 Mbit/s serial line to two 2,048 Mbit/s PCM lines
respectively 8,192 Mbit/s to four 2,048 Mbit/s connected to the HDLC controller.
The PCM line interfaces are duplicated. The AS7 transmits on both sides of the PCM
lines and it receives data from the side selected by the change over signal. If the change
over signal is set low then PCM lines from the GSW0 are selected in receive direction.
Interface to basic timing signals
The AS7 interfaces to 8,192 MHz and 8 kHz basic timing signals. One kΩ serial resistors
are used in the basic timing signal inputs. Both the 8 kHz and the 8.192 MHz signals are
5V signals
Power feed
AS7 gets the +5V, -5V and +3.3V supply voltages from the back plane. All other voltages
needed in the unit must be generated in the unit. Back plane V(I/O) pins are used for
3,3V supply.
Processor voltages must be generated from 5V to divide the load of power supply
voltages.
The power up order of +5V and 3.3V of the cartridge power source is not specified.
The AS7 has current limiting electronics, including fuses, when it is plugged into a
powered on cartridge.
The PCI to Compact PCI Bridge is powered directly, through an automatic fuse, from the
backplane in order to ensure an unpowered AS7 doesn’t interfere with the backplane
Compact PCI bus.
