INTRODUCTION

People's lives have become increasingly reliant on social media platforms in

recent years, particularly during times of pandemic. While everyone stays and works at
home, these provide communication, education, and entertainment. These have grown in
high demand during COVID-19, and it is clear that social media plays a significant role
in drawing attendees. However, the presence of the internet and social media does, in
fact, make it easier for people to obtain knowledge and entertainment from around the
world without being constrained by geography or time. As a result, during these times,
social media has become a source of escape or pure entertainment. Many social media
apps have exploded in popularity, and one of them is TikTok, a viral video platform that
has many people, particularly teenagers and students, hooked. It has evolved into the
most cutting-edge and appealing instrument for linking individuals all over the world.

Henley (2010) and Khan et al. (2018) are two examples. Social media has many
positive effects, such as giving someone the freedom to speak freely on the internet while
also allowing someone to stay up to date on global news or simply form a companionship
with their friends. In addition, Abbasova (2016), Rizky T. Sari (2019), and Ayaz & Khan
(2016) found that interaction on social media helps in improving learners’ vocabulary and
literacy skills as it gives opportunities to engage with the language. With its meaning,
students can improve their vocabulary mastery through social media, especially through
Tiktok.

Tiktok is a social media platform for audio-visual media, which is media that can
be seen and heard. Tiktok is an application that provides special and unique effects to
create an interesting short video. The Tiktok application is a social networking and music
video platform from China. Huining (2020) and Susilowati (2018). Tiktok launched in
September 2016 and established itself as the most downloaded application. As of January
2020, TikTok has reached more than 150 countries worldwide, with more than 400
million daily active users (Sensor, 2020). TikTok allows users to create interesting videos
of various content with its easy-to-use special effects and editing tools, producing videos
in a range of 3 to 90 seconds, and has features that enable users to interact with their
audience through their comments and private chat sections (Demmy and Fathul, 2018).
There are many reasons why TikTok has been steadily increasing in popularity,
particularly among the younger generation. TikTok has a young user base, which is made
up of 69% of users aged 16 to 24 (Sloane and Rittenhouse, 2019). The majority of its
users are of Generation Z, in which they are claimed to be highly educated, tech-savvy by
nature, prefer graphics, enjoy creating content and are the generation who are constantly
connected to their mobile screens (Fromm and Read, 2018; Prioparas et al., 2017; Smith,
2019). Besides, TikTok videos are also shorter in duration, so they are able to capture the
interest and short attention span of many learners. Learning in the form of shorter videos
will significantly encourage learners to take part in task-relevant activities and reduce
task-irrelevant activities (Szpunar et al., 2013). Su (2018) determined that users display a
positive attitude on TikTok as they are able to learn many skills that are beneficial in their
daily lives. TikTok also acts as a good facilitator for the delivery of teaching materials to
students. The educational video media in the videos are designed for learning; thus, the
content has been adapted to the learning objectives to aid students' learning (Erniasih,
2018). Many teachers have used the site to create their own videos to help students
understand difficult ideas, clarify laws or philosophies, or just provide work instructions.
These videos are available for download and sharing. As a result, students will gain a lot
from this approach because they will have unrestricted access to the films' contents and
points.

Abbasova (2016), Rizky T. Sari (2019), and Ayaz & Khan (2016) say that
interaction on social media helps in improving learners’ vocabulary and literacy skills as
it gives opportunities to engage with the language. With its meaning, students can
improve their vocabulary mastery through social media, especially through Tiktok. And,
Neuman & Dwyer (2011), Hornby (1995), Elfrieda & Michael (2005), Hatch and Brown
(1995), and Nunan (1998) mastery vocabulary can be a list of words with their meanings
and must know to communicate effectively (expressive vocabulary and receptive
vocabulary) and is needed to express our ideas and be able to understand other people's
sayings.
Vocabulary is the foundation of acquiring a second language. Without learning
vocabulary, communication in the second language becomes difficult (Rohmatillah,
2014). Vocabulary is defined as a language element that links the four language skills in
learning a foreign language, which include listening, speaking, reading, and writing
(Huyen and Nga, 2003). Thornbury (2006) stated that in order to master vocabulary,
students are required to have comprehensive knowledge of vocabulary. This knowledge
includes understanding the meanings of the words in their spoken and written form, the
grammatical behavior, the word derivation, its collocations, and the register of the words
(both spoken and written), the connotations or associations, as well as the frequency of
the words. Cahyono and Widiati (2008) stated that the purpose of vocabulary teaching is
to enable learners to understand the concept of unfamiliar words, to acquire a greater
number of words, as well as to apply and utilize those words successfully for
communicative purposes. Whereas Intaraprasert (2004) outlined that the main objectives
of vocabulary learning are to discover the meanings of new words, to retain the
knowledge of newly learned words, and to expand the knowledge of English vocabulary.
Therefore, in order to influence positive vocabulary growth among students, effective
strategies in both teaching and learning are required.

TikTok is a video-sharing social network service owned by ByteDance that,

according to its website, seeks to “inspire creativity” of users and “bring joy” to the users
(TikTok - Real Short Videos, 2020). It is a typical User-generated content platform
(UGC), where content is produced by users, rather than the company. Accessible via
mobile phone, the application allows users to create short lip-sync, dancing, gaming,
DIY, food videos, etc., in 3 to 15 seconds or 3 to 60 seconds. Other than video
production, users engage in TikTok by viewing, sharing, and commenting on videos
created by other users. Among various interaction of users, memes, the remix and
reinterpretation of catchphrases, storylines, and songs, and other formulaic elements,
were often used to reflect user’s thoughts and culture, which is similar to the meme
practiced discussed by Ryan Miller in other social media platforms (2018). Launched in
2017, TikTok soon grew to be one of the most downloaded apps worldwide (Sensor
Tower, 2019). In the U.S., 60% of the TikTok active users are aged 16-24 year old
(Reuters, 2019). In fact, TikTok users in the US open the app eight times a day and spend
an average 46 minutes on the app each day (Kerry Flynn, 2019). Why do they spend so
much time on this particular platform? What social meanings they acquired in using
TikTok? And how do microcelebrities in their communities and TikTok itself influence
their creative practices on TikTok?

An article published by The New Indian Express (2019) announce that in

December alone 36 calls from children and adults was received by the counsellor of
Tamil Nadu at the 104 helplines regarding TikTok bullying, harassment and addiction. A
23-year-old who committed suicide in Vyasarpadi in Tamil Nadu, he took the dangerous
step after he was teased online for dressing up like a woman and posted on TikTok. Most
targeted audience in this app are school students who are often seen in school uniforms
posting videos of themselves in classrooms which give an opportunity to stalkers to guess
which school they go to. “If at all China wants demographic data from ByteDance’s
userbase, it will perhaps be able to pull out more data than the Indian government itself.
This is not often considered a threat by local policy makers, but the truth is that they will
have data relating to your height, weight and even how many users wear spectacles,” said
Moses Sam Paul working in Heptagon Technologies (The New Indian Express, 2019).
“A lot of the content (on TikTok) is negative, especially for children,” said Rudiantara is
the reason why this has been blocked in Indonesia because the content in it is not suitable
for children and not educational. Another article from The Economic Times (2019) states
that the court of India ruling to ban the app TikTok from downloading as it contains
“pornographic and inappropriate contents”, said the government. Children were
vulnerable and might get uncovered to sexual predators (The Economic Times, 2019).

As described by Bartlett-Bragg (2006), social networks are web-based

environments in which a range of apps may be used to promote group interactions and
shared spaces for collaboration, social connections, and information sharing. TikTok, one
of the most popular social networking sites for teenagers, was the most downloaded
program in July 2020. The site allows users to upload movies ranging from 3 to 60
seconds in length and share them with others. TikTok enables users to record videos of
themselves having a good time to music or spoken-word snippets, and then edit the film
with a number of effects to make it more interesting. In the field of communication,
Simsek et al studied musical.ly, the app which was later acquired by Bytedance in 2017
and merged with TikTok. They examined the content produced by teenage girls in
relation to microcelebrity inspirations and aspirations. Microcelebrities or influencers in
their communities affect teenage girls a lot, however none of the girls treat them as role
models and intentionally avoid “too much fame”, decoupling “inspiration” and
“aspiration” in the concept of microcelebrity (Simek 2018, 41-56). As the author
acknowledged, his findings are limited since musical.ly has since merged with TikTok,
and the ecologies of the platform have changed accordingly. My research will, therefore,
take into account the differences between these two platforms, and examine how
microcelebrity influencers affect the users’ TikTok videos viewing and creating.

TikTok is a comparatively new social media platform created on the 2nd of

August 2018, when Douyin merged with Musical.ly. In just two years, TikTok has grown
into one of the biggest social media platforms in the world and the extensive user base of
TikTok has caught the attention of marketers. As of December 2019, the platform boasts
over 200 million monthly users (Clement, 2020), of which 55% actively uploads videos
(Beer, 2019). So far, a variety of companies in the US operating in different industries
have created #challenge-campaigns on TikTok, such as Chipotle’s #GuacDance and
Guess’s #InMyDenim (Previte, 2020). The existing campaigns have had varied success,
and a few of them have gone viral. However, no challenges made by Swedish companies
have reached the masses yet. Due to the platform’s newness, marketers do not fully
understand how to market on it, yet they understand its potential. TikTok has the mission
to “inspire creativity and bring joy” (TikTok, 2020). It is built around User-generated
Content (UGC) where users create their own content to upload a creative, short-looping
video containing a variety of different content such as dance-routines, science
experiments and visual memes. One of the most prominent forms of UGC on the
platform are #challenges. Its rich content has made the platform immensely popular (Xu
et al., 2019). TikTok has a young user-base with 69% of the users aged 16 to 24 (Sloane
and Rittenhouse, 2019). The majority of the user base constitutes Gen Z, referring to
individuals being born between the mid-1990s to the beginning of 2010s (Fromm and
Read, 2018; Grow and Yang, 2018; Priporas et al., 2017). Gen Z are highly educated,
tech-savvy by nature, prefer graphics over simple text, the first ‘true-online’ generation
that lives their life through a mobile screen by being constantly connected and lastly Gen
Z’s love to create content (Fromm and Read 2018; Prioparas et al., 2017; Smith, 2019).
Therefore, TikTok being a platform based on UGC, more specifically short videos, is
seemingly a perfect match for Gen Z.

Social networks, according to Bartlett-Bragg (2006), offer a variety of

applications that enhance group interactions and shared spaces for collaboration, social
connections, and information exchanges in a web-based environment. In September
2016, TikTok, also known as Douyin in China, made its debut. The following year,
TikTok was launched worldwide. With more than 45 million downloads globally during
the three-month period, the application launched by Beijing-based digital unicorn
Bytedance has surpassed Facebook and WhatsApp as the most popular app (Zheping,
2018). As the most downloaded application in July 2020, TikTok is one of the most
famous social networking sites which targeted youngsters to share their 3 mins. to 60-
second-long videos. TikTok allows users to record videos of themselves goofing off to
music or spoken-word clips and then edit the footage with a variety of effects. As of
2021, TikTok is one of the world's most popular O’Malley (1987), listening
comprehension strategies can be categorized into three categories: metacognitive
strategies, cognitive strategies, and socio-affective strategies which depend on the kind or
amount of process involved. ESL learning via interactive listening is said to rely on
immersing students in tasks that demand them to negotiate meaning and engage in
realistic and meaningful dialogue, not only in "comprehensible input" (Long & Crookes,
1991).

According to A.M. Ostrovsky and J.R. Chen (2020) One of the most recent
platforms to surge to prominence has been TikTok, a social network with more than 45.6
million active users in the U.S.—with 63.5% being aged <29years- where creators post
videos of themselves talking, dancing, or lip-syncing. With its unique “For You” page,
where the majority of viewed content is randomly selected rather than drawn from a pool
of “friends,” TikTok generates a wider and more diverse audience than the traditional
“follower”-based social media model. Videos are sorted into hashtags, with search results
directly sorted by likes received per post.
One of the most important components of language learning is the development of
one’s vocabulary. It is difficult for students to learn when they lack vocabulary.
Meanwhile, vocabulary development is an important element of language development
since vocabulary is essential for teaching English since students cannot comprehend
others or express themselves without a sufficient vocabulary. The most critical
component in helping children master language is vocabulary. If they have a broad
vocabulary, they will be able to learn the language skills rapidly. One of the most crucial
components of learning a foreign language is memorizing vocabulary. Students’
vocabulary must be expanded. They will be able to boost their ability to learn a language
if they develop a good vocabulary. Many of the words in an English textbook must be
memorized. No one can speak or understand the language without it. It indicates that if
someone doesn’t know how to write a word or construct a sentence, they won’t be able to
do so well. According to Alemi and Tayebi (2012:1), vocabulary is the foundation of
language mastery, providing the foundation for learners’ success in other skills, including
speaking, reading, listening, and writing. Additionally, according to Stahl and Fairbanks
in Bromley (2007:528), students with a strong vocabulary have greater reading
comprehension and achieve higher achievement test scores than students with a weak
vocabulary. Furthermore vocabulary knowledge is more crucial than grammar. Like
Thornburry stated that, “Without grammar very little can be conveyed, without
vocabulary nothing can be conveyed”.

TikTok is Malaysia's fifth most popular social media platform that has been used
(Chean, 2019). Moreover, TikTok has been hailed as the third most popular social media
app next to Facebook and Instagram among teenagers. When it comes to TikTok,
students are incredibly creative and enthusiastic, therefore they create content either solo
or group. Several researches on the use of TikTok in English language instruction have
been undertaken in the past. According to the study conducted by Risma Galuh (2021)
about Student’s Perception toward The Use of TikTok in Learning English Vocabulary
conclude that it is possible to infer a short videos on TikTok with English material
content could help participants in expanding their English vocabularies. Furthermore, he
concluded that TikTok as a medium for language acquisition can now be considered. For
many students they praised TikTok as a language learning tool since the English content
videos were easy to understand and retain numerous vocabularies they encountered on
the videos they watch, such as verb, noun, and other topic vocabulary.

However, Huining (2020) pointed that there is no previous research has looked
into the viability of employing TikTok as a teaching tool for EFL students. TikTok,
which is known for short video sharing, gives video creators as lot of freedom to produce
videos in whatever style or topic they want, with the exception of video length. Unlike
other video sharing social media apps, TikTok videos span from 15 seconds to 5 minutes
in duration. Meanwhile, according to Rimasari Pramesti Putri (2021) TikTok's capacity is
to catch and present imagination, information and valuable minute’s right from the
telephone. It tends to be seen that the training given is innovations and information. This
brings about an uplifting outlook towards learning intelligent web-based entertainment.

In the same view, Zhai Xiuwen and Abu Bakar Razali (2021) believed that
students can watch short videos by English teachers of fascinating English learning
materials of popular topics among teenagers via TikTok to increase their vocabulary as
well as grammar to improve their English reading and writing skills, according to
previous relevant research. TikTok content providers that create educational content,
which helps people, learn more about general knowledge are extremely valuable. It
makes it easier for teaching students to study and grasp the information supplied by
Tiktoker, such as mathematics and the English language. The aim of this study is on .the
perceptions of people who watch and follow @aaroons.english (a content creator) on
social media, especially TikTok, who thought about English vocabulary (Cahyani Fitri,
2022). Moreover, TikTok maintains their user’s value by taking into account the user's
experience, needs, goals, content creation, and form innovation (Yu, 2019). These could
be motivator to utilize TikTok as learning took, particularly for vocabulary learning. By
regularly watching tutorial videos, learners will be able to practice more frequently
themselves. Additionally, interaction is defined by Abbasova (2016), Risky T. Sari
(2019), and Ayaz & Khan (2016) because it provides opportunities for learners to
practice and improve their vocabulary and literacy abilities through the help of social
media. A chance to interact with the language it means that students can use social media,
particularly in TikTok, to improve their mastery in vocabulary.
Furthermore, a greater amount of the learner’s didn’t have an interest in learning
vocabulary. The class activities relies upon course readings that the example frequently
causes the learner to get exhausted with the illustration and uninterested to learn. They
were apathetic to remember new words that they heard or read in the text. However,
many learners have social media app like TikTok tend to communicate with their friends
and receive information or to engage entertainment. They invest most of their time by
utilizing social media, particularly in TikTok.

TikTok, one of the most popular programs today, has a significant impact on the
development of its users because it may be used for educational purposes. People who
view their films gain from the advancement of content providers who educate everything
based on their prior knowledge. One of the reasons people fail to understand English is
because they do not understand the meaning of a specific term. If students enhance their
vocabulary, they will be able to understand what they read, talk, and listen to more
readily. The researchers aim to learn about students' attitudes on the usage of TikTok in
vocabulary learning, this study intends to describe the impact of TikTok on vocabulary
learning.

Framework of the Study

This study is based on The Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (CTML)

developed by Mayer (2009, p. 57). It provides contributions and support for the conduct
of this research.
Figure 1. Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (Mayer 2009, P.6r).

The cognitive theory of multimedia learning assumes that the human information-
processing system includes dual channels for visual/pictorial and auditory/verbal
processing, where each channel has limited capacity for processing, and active learning
entails carrying out appropriate cognitive processing during learning. Five steps in
multimedia learning are: selecting relevant words from the presented text or narration,
selecting relevant images from the presented illustrations, organizing the selected words
into a coherent verbal representation, organizing selected images into a coherent visual
representation, and Integrating the visual and verbal representations and prior knowledge.

In each of the experimental groups in this study, we will have an opportunity to

understand if the processing of information via dual channels, i.e., visual/pictorial and
auditory/verbal channels has different effects on incidental vocabulary learning.
Processing of information via The Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning is presented
in figure 1 above.

As it can be seen from the figure above, “processing of pictures occurs mainly in
the visual/pictorial channel; the processing of spoken words occurs mainly in the
auditory/verbal channel; but processing of printed words takes place initially in the
visual/pictorial channel and then moves to the auditory/verbal channel” (Mayer 2009, p.
57).

This theory is based on three assumptions:

1. Dual channels – where humans possess separate channels for processing visual
and auditory information.
2. Limited capacity – where humans are limited in the amount of information that
they can process in each channel at one time.
3. Active processing – where humans engage in active learning by attending to
relevant incoming information, organizing selected information into coherent
mental representations, and integrating mental representations with other
knowledge (Mayer 2009, p. 63).

Statement of the Problem

This research focused on a content-based instructional material for English about

their perception toward the use of Tiktok in learning vocabulary of the English major
students of Pangasinan State University campus taking Bachelor of Secondary Education
(BSE) S.Y. 2021-2022.
Specifically, the study answered the following questions:

1. What is the perception of the students in learning vocabulary through

Tiktok?
2. How effective Tiktok as a teaching tool in learning vocabulary beyond
classroom?

Definition of Terms

Tiktok- a social app that allows users to make short videos. Users can add filters, text,
sounds, and music, and it is especially popular to make creative, lip-synched music
videos. Users scroll through a newsfeed, react to content, and navigate with hashtags.

Content-based instructional materials- focuses on content rather than language.

However, the goal is language instruction. Simply stated, the language becomes a tool for
learning new things instead of the topic.

Multimedia presentation- go beyond the use of text and images. Including digital media
like animation, video, audio, or interactive features like forms, popups and more can help
enrich your presentations both visually and content-wise.

Sensory memory- allows environmental information to be retained, sometimes for as

little as a fraction of a second, as it makes its way into our consciousness.

Working memory- refers to a brain system, or mental workspace, responsible for

temporarily storing and manipulating information. It’s a skill that allows us to work with
information without losing track of what we’re doing.

Verbal model- a model that is described by words, rather than by formulas, tables, or
graphs.

Pictorial model- sketch of the situation, showing each object, at the beginning of the
motion, the end of the motion, and at any point in between where the character of the
motion changes.

Long term memory- refers to the storage of information over an extended period. This
type of memory tends to be stable and can last a long time—often for years.
Chapter 2
METHODOLOGY
Research Design
This study is a descriptive method to gather and analyze the perspective of
students in using Tiktok as the medium of learning vocabulary. Hence, this method is
suitable for describing the characteristics of a population about a topic or problem; the
researchers used descriptive quantitative approach in the research. The descriptive
method uses questions appropriate for the collection of data of answers pertaining to a
particular population or group.
Sources of Data
The data needed in this research will gathered from the respondents of the
questionnaire flowed to the English major students of Pangasinan State University-Sta.
Maria Campus who is using Tiktok as the respondents of this research. The researchers
will use primary source of data which is the questionnaire to ensure that the answers will
be original and reliable. The questionnaire was designed for the respondents to answer
the provided questions and will be flowed through Google forms.
Moreover, all the data gathered from the questionnaire will be tallied by the
researchers. The main function of this questionnaire is to know and identify the
perception of each respondent towards learning vocabulary through the use of Tiktok
application and if it is effective or not.

Instrumentation and Data Collection

The primary instrument that was used in the data collection was a questionnaire,
which consists of questions for the profile of the student in the first part of the
questionnaire and 10 items in the second part of the questionnaire. The questionnaire
focuses on determining the perception of English major students toward the use of Tiktok
in learning English vocabulary and how effective does Tiktok application in learning
vocabulary. The questionnaire was composed of multiple choices, which were suitable
for this research purpose. The data was gathered using Google forms. There were two
parts to the questionnaire. Section one included population statistics including; name, sex,
age, Time spent in using TikTok, current knowledge in vocabulary, and the purpose of
using Tiktok. The section two is where the questions that will determine the perceptions
of students and the effectives of Tiktok for learning vocabulary.
Furthermore, after ensuring the validity of the questions created by the
researchers, the researchers will ask permission from the Campus executive director of
Pangasinan State University- Sta. Maria Campus to float the questionnaire to English
major students of Pangasinan State University- Sta. Maria who are using TikTok. The
answers of the respondents will serve as a basis for gathering the data and to come up
with a result whether the TikTok application is an effective tool for students to learn
vocabulary. The next figure will show the flow of the research in gathering data.

CHAPTER III

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter contains a detailed presentation and discussion of the data analysis
and the results of this study. The data has been collected, analyzed, and interpreted. The
research methodology in this study was conducted using the presentation of the
quantitative data gathered through questions answered by the participants. The results
from the quantitative data gathered through questions answered by the respondents.
In this study, the researchers created ten questions to find their responses. The
questionnaire consisted of two categories wherein the first part deals about the students'
perception towards the use of TikTok in learning vocabulary while the second part were
deals with effectiveness of in teaching vocabulary. Question numbers 1–5 consisted of
open-ended questions regarding the students’ perception toward the use of TikTok in
learning vocabulary.
Question numbers 6-10 deal with the effectiveness of Tiktok in teaching
vocabulary. The respondents will answer with "strongly agree," "agree," "undecided,"
"disagree," and "strongly disagree." If they answer “strongly agree," it means that they
are very much in agreement with the given question, and otherwise to those who answer
“strongly disagree." If they answer "undecided," it means that they are uncertain about
the given question. And if they answer "agree," it implies that they admit that they are
with the question, and vice versa for those who answer “disagree.”
The number of respondents for this study was 45 second-year students who are
currently studying at Pangasinan State University Sta. Maria Campus taking up a
Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English who were users of TikTok.

Students' Profile
Age of Respondents

CHAPTER IV
SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Summary
In today’s teaching and learning, adaptation and utilization of technology and
digital platforms are much needed. Using digital platforms it is a consideration to the
teachers to have a creative and innovate teaching package for the students learning.
Among the Generation Z, it is indisputable that Tiktok's popularity is constantly growing.
Tiktok is one of the digital platforms that most of the students favored of, because of its
creativity and features within the application itself that helps them not just to boost their
self-confidence but also in learning. The inspiration and interface of utilizing Tiktok may
be exchanged into the push-power to engage the students in their academic consider
within the advance field, the utilization of Tiktok for instructive reason with short videos
have been playing increasingly critical particularly in learning English vocabulary.

Based on the findings in Chapter 3, it appears that the majority of students have a
positive attitude toward using TikTok videos to learn vocabulary. As we can see from the
results of the questionnaire that has been collected from the students, almost all of the
students answered strongly agree to every question under the perception. Furthermore,
the researcher discovered that the majority of students agree that the use of TikTok
videos has a positive effect on their vocabulary learning as well as their contribution to
the teaching and learning process, particularly when learning new words.

There are numerous benefits to using video in the classroom, particularly TikTok
videos, such as assisting student in comprehending the information. Today's videos,
according to Sherin (2017), are used to explain and analyze, but we think that using video
to enable video support is a more successful solution, given teachers' desire to notice and
perceive classroom experiences. To put it another way, TikTok films can assist pupils
learn and improve their vocabulary using TikTok videos.

The result of this study indicates that Tiktok Videos are effective to be applied as
media in learning vocabulary since they get positive perception from the students. Base
on the questionnaire indicating the perception of the students whether the videos from
Tiktok application can teach the students to develop and enhance their vocabulary and the
result of it is positive. The Second year English major students of Pangasinan State
University Sta. Maria Campus has a positive perception to Tiktok in learning vocabulary
also the short videos from the Tiktok application created a positive effect on the
knowledge of the students based form their answers in the questionnaire that the
researchers of this study conducted.

Conclusion

The world has changed quickly together with the development of new digital
platforms. Tiktok as an developing innovative product has gigantic possibilities on the
present day in numerous spaces with it’s popularity among the students. English language
teachers, as well as the institutions ought to pay consideration to the potential utilization
of Tiktok in English instruction for the students and take the chances to form an
innovative and creative learning system that engage the students to learn more.

In conclusion, based on the findings of the researchers, most of the students has
strongly greed about their perception about TikTok as well as, most agreed that it has
positive effect on their vocabulary learnings. Therefore, TikTok app or videos is an
effective tool or app in learning and in improving vocabulary of the second year major in
English students of PSU Sta. Maria Campus.

Recommendation

Based on the research findings, the following recommendations are made: (1)
TikTok should be used in the classroom by teachers to create bite-sized micro-lessons or
assignments that offer interesting possibilities for interactivity, creativity, and fun; (2)
determine if using the Tiktok app can affect students' academic performance; and (3)
identify practices for improving one's vocabulary skills.

Furthermore, future scholars may find this study valuable in delving deeper into
the unlimited potential of educational practices using TikTok around the world. For
example, utilizing the TikTok app, this study might be leveraged to generate online
speaking exercises and authentic networking among children, educators, and parents. The
use of technology and social media in the classroom helps to break down barriers and
create a productive learning environment around the world. It is suggested that TikTok be
used for language abilities other than speaking abilities, such as listening, reading, and
writing abilities, not only for second language learners but also for foreign language
learners and natives for various languages such as French, Spanish, German, and others,
in future research. Educators could use the Tiktok app to encourage and enhance students'
speaking pronunciation for communicative and educational objectives. Due to the Covid-
19 pandemic, this study is especially important in this digitized era and online learning
phase. As a result, this study shows that TikTok is a useful teaching tool, particularly for
language learning.
