Produce Embroidered Article

The ornamentation of textiles and other materials with needlework for personal
use and decoration is called embroidery. The term embroidery is an English word
derived from the old French embroiders meaning edge and border. Embroidery was
brought by the Spaniards into the Philippines during their colonization. The
embroidery region spread out all over the Philippines and became one of the
needlework’s that popularized in the country. In this lesson, we will discuss about use
of basic tools in embroidery and you will create an embroidered article.

The tools in the activity are the embroidery tools which you need to have. You need to
understand the usage and functions of the tools so you know how to use them
properly in doing the embroidery. You will learn in this lesson the basic tools and
functions used in embroidery, embroidery stitches, designing, tracing the designs in
fabric, and doing embroideries.

Basic Tools and Materials in Embroidery

Before learning about embroidery stitches, it is important to understand the
different tools in embroidery and how to use them. Below are tools used in
embroidery:
Tool Function

● Used to measure short distance

● A smaller ruler with a sliding
guide and is about six inches
long
● Used to measure hem lines,
button holes, and areas where
other small measurements
Measuring Gauge require checking such as pleats
and tucks
● Used for measuring
more than one-foot
distance or materials
● A length of tape or thin
flexible metal, marked at
graded intervals for measuring
Tape measure ● Used to take body measurement

● Made from metal or plastic

● Protect the middle finger and
push the needle while doing
your embroidery work
● This come in sizes 6
(small) to 12 (large)

Thimble

● Made of wood, bone, metal or plastic

Used to make eyelets in the fabric to
be embroidered
● It is also used to keep the fabric
stretched while embroidery stitches are
applied on the design

Embroidery Hoop
● It is a small, sharp and
pointed-good for fine work
use for trimming scallops,
clipping threads, and cutting
large eyelets
● Put sheath or cover so the blade
won’t rust and get them
sharpened occasionally
Embroidery Scissors

● This is a diamond shaped

wire attached to a handle
to insert the thread
through the needle eye

● It is used for easier threading

Needle Threader

● It is fine powder used in

transferring design by
pricking method
● A fine resinous powder
formerly used to prevent
ink from spreading on
unglazed paper or to
Pounce prepare parchment to
receive writing
● Short pieces of steel with a
fine point at one end and a
little opening or eye at the
other
● The kind of embroidery
work to do and the kind of
thread to use are two things
Embroidery Needle to be considered in choosing
your needle
● A needle is a sharp, pointed
tool used in sewing.

3 TYPES OF NEEDLES

● Sharp needle – have short

oval eyes, used for ordinary
hand stitching.
● Crewels – sizes 1-10, sharp-
pointed, medium length with
have long, oval eyes for easy
threading, designed for
embroidery work.
● Millimeters- are longer than
sharps and used for basting.
● Chenille - sizes 13-26 are
also sharp-pointed needles
but they are thicker and
longer and have larger eyes.
They are that types of
needles appropriate for
embroidery that is worked
with heavier yarns.
● Tapestry needle - sizes 13-
26, they are similar in size to
chenille but are blunt rather
than sharp. This makes them
best for thread-counting
embroidery and for the
needle point as well

● Used for tracing designs

Transparent paper used for tracing maps,
drawings, or designs.

Fabric ● It has great variety and it can

differ in material, weight,
weave, design, color, and
finish
● It is referred to as a cloth or
other material produced by
weaving together cotton,
nylon, wool, silk, or other
threads
BEFORE SEWING
It is very important to straighten
the fabric first before sewing.
Ways to straighten the fabric:

1. Pull cloth to straighten the grain

lines.
2. Pull in the direction of arrows.
3. Pull each half of
folded cloth
separately.
4. Pull a strand along the
crosswise grain then cut the
following:
a. Line created by
the pulled thread
b. To straighten difficult
fabrics

Thread ● Threads are usually coded in

numbers and color names.
● They can be bought in skeins,
balls or spools.
● The thread type is determined
by the color and weight of
the fabric and should either
match the fabric or should
have a darker shade than the
fabric.

KINDS OF THREAD

1. Mercerized cotton is strong and

does not shrink.

Ex. For light to medium weight

fabrics

2. Synthetic thread is stronger

than the cotton thread.

Ex. For knitted, stretchable and man-

made fabrics

3. Silk thread is durable and elastic.

Ex. For animal fibers fabrics

● used to cut fabric so that
it has a jagged edge.
● This keeps the edges of your
fabric from unravelling as you
work with it.

Pinking Shears

● It adheres permanently to
wood and fabric, and dries
clear and fast
● Also great for securing knots or
loose thread ends

other

Cross Stitch

A stitch with a loop and stitches evenly worked on both

left and right sides of a design area.

Feather Stitch
● A kind of filling stitch which is ideal for
making leaves or feathers.
● It requires us to divide the pattern into two
and each side is filled alternately giving it a
plaited effect in the centre, thus ideal to
make leaves or feathers.

Fish Bone

● A single detached stitched used primarily to fill

in a design area.
● It is a popular stitch among embroiderers in
that it can be used to create the eyes on an
embroidered face or the center of a flower.

French Knot
A basic overlapping stitch popular for its use in
borders.

Herringbone Stitch

● Detached chain stitch

● This stitch is work in a circle to resemble the
petals of a flower.
Lazy Daisy chain stitch

● A very decorative stitch and can be

experimented with threads for various colors
over borders.
● Close layers of this stitch can create
wonderful effects on a pattern.
Running stitch is the simplest type of hand stitching.
It is used for shearing, mending or darning.

Running Stitch

A solid filling stitch that is used to cover a design

area with long, straight stitches worked very close
together
Satin Stitch

● It is done using quite thick threads, such as

wool.
● It was used as an outlining stitch or as a
filling stitch.

Split Stitch
● Also known as rice grain stitch.
● Stitch uses simple straight stitches in a single
direction to fill in patterns.
● It has shorter stitches above the fabric and
longer stitches on the reverse side.
● They remind of strawberry seeds, probably,
which inspired its name

Seed Stitch

● An outline stitch, this stitch is usually used

for flower stems, and outlines.
● It can only be used as filling, rows of Stem
stitch worked closely together within a shape
until it is filled completely.

Principles and Elements of

Design Principles of Design

In creating a good design and combining the right color and thread, you can
produce a good embroidery design. It is important to study the principles of design
so that you can apply them to your projects. The design is the arrangement of line,
form, color, and texture with the purpose of achieving order and beauty.
Harmony
Harmony is the quality of forming a pleasing and consistent whole. Harmony
involves the Law of Unity with variety. This principle infers repetition of
line, form, shape and size.

Proportion

Pertains to a part, share, or number considered in comparative relation to a

whole. Proportion refers to the relative size and scale of the various elements in
a design.
Balance

Balance is the concept of visual equilibrium, and relates to our physical

sense of balance.

May be produced in two ways, either formal (symmetrical) or informal

(asymmetrical). Formal balance or symmetry has been arranged in equal color,
shape, and size on either side of a design. While the informal has unequal
proportion and not identically arranged.

Rhythm

Rhythm is a strong, regular repeated pattern of movement. It is a smooth

related movement. Pattern and line carry the eyes along without jerky motion.
Rhythm can be described as timed movement through space; an easy,
connected path along which the eye follows a regular arrangement of motifs.

Emphasis

Emphasis is also referred to as point of focus, or interruption. It marks the

locations in a composition which most strongly draw the viewer's’ attention.
The eyes of the viewer directs to the point of focus that the creator wants to
focus on.

Elements of Design

1. Line

Skeleton or basic foundation sketch to direct the eye vertically or horizontally.

Lines are useful for dividing space and drawing the eye to a specific location.

2. Texture

Refers to the surface appearance which is either rough or smooth, dull or

glossy, thick or thin. Textures can create a more three-dimensional appearance
on two-dimensional surface.

3. Color

Color creates moods within the product and tells stories and emotions of
the creator. Color may be cool, warm, bright or dull.

Primary Colors - Red, yellow and blue. In traditional color theory (used in
paint and pigments), primary colors are the 3 pigment colors that cannot be
mixed or formed by any combination of other colors. All other colors are
derived from these 3 hues.

Secondary Colors - Green, orange and purple. These are the colors formed by
mixing the primary colors.

Tertiary Colors - Yellow-orange, red-orange, red-purple, blue-purple, blue-

green & yellow-green. These are the colors formed by mixing a primary and a
secondary color. That's why the hue is a two-word name, such as blue-green,
red-violet, and yellow-orange.

4. Shape

Shapes, geometric or organic, add interest. Shapes are defined by boundaries,

such as a lines or color, and they are often used to emphasize a portion of the
page.

5. Space

Space can be negative or the parts of the site that are left blank, whether that’s
white or some other color, help to create an overall image. Use negative space
to create shapes as you would any other element.

Lesson 2: Produced Recycled Project

The handicraft industry allows you to create a lot of useful art using different kinds of materials
and mediums. It is a venue wherein you can exercise your creativity and innovativeness that you can
share and be used to improve daily life. Most beautiful and extravagant handicrafts are made from
materials that are rare and striking in its own right. However, high quality handicraft products can also be
made from materials that are commonly found in our surroundings. This handicraft process involves the
practice of recycling. In this lesson you will learn what is recycling and its importance in our environment
and society and also how to create wonderful handicrafts with the use of recyclable materials that are at
par with the ones made with expensive ones.

Essential Questions: Why is it important to practice recycling?

Creating a livelihood for yourself can be done in a lot of ways. One is to learn skills
that you can use to get employed or you may use those skills to start a business for
yourself. The handicraft industry can provide you with such an opportunity. You just
need the skills and creativity to make the products and the perseverance to continue
innovating yourself. In this lesson, you will know how to create sellable handicraft products
from recyclable materials.

What is Recycling?

The increasing volume of waste that is being produced every single day has been a long-
time problem not just in the country but all over the world. The unmanageable waste
that we currently handle has created severe side effects in the environment and our
health as well. Many programs and advocacies have been pursued in order to address
these problems. The most common technique reintroduced to us continuously is
recycling.

TYPES OF RECYVLING
Recycling can be done in different ways. It depends on the process you will use in
order to transform your garbage.
Internal Recycling
Internal recycling engages the use of byproducts of a manufacturing process. It is done
within the company’s organization and does not involve individuals not connected to the
operations of the manufacturer.

An example would be the metal industry, specifically copper production, wherein copper
pieces are produced during the manufacturing. These pieces are melted again and recast to
make products. This practice is common in other industries as well.
External Recycling
External recycling is the process of salvaging a product that has been worn out due
to constant use. This process is often observed by households. Recyclable materials such as
old newspapers and bottle cans are transformed into different products that serve different use
and purpose.

An example would be using old newspapers and magazines to make products such
as bags, wallets, vases, and container boxes as decorations or even recycling it to make
handmade paper.

Common Materials Used in Recycling

Numerous materials can be processed for recycling. Paper is the most abundant waste
material produced in cities and rural areas. This reason is that a lot of products use paper as
their main ingredient such as magazines, boxes, and packaging. Plastic is also very common
since it is very durable and commonly used for packaging and containers. Used clothing, metals
cans, and glass products are common recyclable materials.
Material Articles
paper woven baskets, paper mache products, jewelry (paper beads),

Gift Wrap Techniques

After preparing the essential tools and materials, it is time for you to wrap the gift items.
Below are the techniques to be performed in wrapping the gifts properly.

Measuring and Cutting

1. You need to place the gift box on the wrapping paper and measure two-thirds of the
box height to cover the flap.
2. Roll the box over the paper to ensure the box will be covered and allow 5 cm for
the overlap.
3. Measure with a steel rule the other side of the box and lightly draw a cutting line with a
pencil.
4. Carefully cut out the paper to the correct size. Try to cut in long, even strokes to
avoid tearing the paper.
Wrapping Boxes

1. Place the box in the center of the wrapping paper and make sure that the side flaps are
the same size. Fold the left edge over ½ inch. Fold the right flap over the gift box
and secure it halfway across the top with tape.
2. Apply double-sided adhesive tape on the left flap, then pull the paper to overlap, peel
off the tape, and press down on top.
3. On one end, fold down the top flap and secure it to the box. Smooth the paper along
the sides with two fingers and fold the side flaps around to cross over, leaving one flap
fold up.
4. Apply the edges of the triangular flap with double-adhesive tape, peel the backing off
and press firmly against the side.

Paper Gift Bag

You can create a custom gift bag of any size with the use of available boxes around the house as
templates such as shoe boxes and cereal boxes. You can decorate these simple paper gift bags
using many of the project techniques, including painting with watercolor, embellishing with
stickers, or sewing on details.
1. Place the box in the center of the gift wrap. Fold the left edge over 1/2 in/12 mm. Fold
the right flap over the box.
2. Fold the left flap over and secure with double-sided tape.
3. On one end of the box, fold in both side flaps.
4. Fold the bottom flap up.
5. Fold the top edge under ¼ inch, then fold the top flap down over the end of the box,
and secure with double-sided tape.
6. You have to carefully slide the box out of the bag. Secure the inside seams with tape.
7. Pinch in each side of the bag to create a crease in the middle.
8. Fold the bottom over so the paper bag can lie flat.
9. You can close the bag with a piece of tape, or you can punch two holes at the top of
each side of the bag and make handles using string, ribbon, or twine.
Ribbon Tying
The simple tying of an attractive bow can transform a simple gift. Here are a few options
for tying and completing your wrap.

Simple Bow

1. Pass the ribbon under the gift so that you have two ends of equal length. Make sure to
use a length of a ribbon that can be wrapped around the box twice. Tie the two ends
together at the top.
2. Knot the tied ends to hold the ribbon in place.
3. Create two loops and tie together to make a simple bow.
4. Place the ribbon ends together and cut them at an angle at the same place.

Cutting Ribbon Ends

Always remember that when you cut the ribbon, use sharp scissors for a clean finish. Here are
the two basic options that you can do in cutting the ribbons.
● Diagonal cut
➢ You must hold the two ribbon ends up together and then you cut at the same
diagonal angle.
● Inverted V-cut
➢ Fold one ribbon end in half and cut an inverted V from the folded part to
the edge of the ribbon. Repeat on the other end.
Cross-Tying Ribbon

1. Get a length of a ribbon that can be wrapped around the box twice. You need to place
the box on top of the ribbon. The length of the ribbon to the right of the box should be
one-quarter of the length of the entire ribbon. Place the left section over the right.
2. Cross the ribbon at the center of the box, then hold the ribbon vertically.
3. Wrap the long ribbon end around the bottom, and then over the top of the box.
4. Insert the long ribbon end through the bottom left corner of the center twist, and then
take the end up through the right corner.
5. Create a simple bow.
6. Clip the ends of the ribbon with a diagonal or inverted V cut.
