True Beauty (Korean: 여신강림 ; Hanja:女神降臨; RR: Yeosin-gangnim; lit. The Advent of a Goddess), adapted into
Spanish as Beauty Secrets, also known as The Secret of Angel and other names, is a South Korean webtoon written and
illustrated by Yaongyi (pseudonym of Kim Na Young).1 First published on Naver Webtoon since April 2, 2018, 2 focuses on a
young girl who learned the art of makeup in her teens to transform herself into a "beautiful goddess" after being bullied and
discriminated against for being perceived as ugly. 3

As of January 2021, the official English version of True Beauty has amassed 5.7 million subscribers. 4 Young Com released a
print version starting on October 29, 2020.5 It was also adapted into a television series of the same name that premiered on
tvN on December 9, 2020. 6

Plot
As a teenager, Lim Ju-gyeong is treated unfairly by her family and harassed by her enemies for being perceived as ugly. She
begins to learn how to use makeup by watching video tutorials on the Internet. She has mastered the art and her makeover
proves to be wonderfully transformative as she quickly rises to fame and people are amazed to see her new beauty. Soon,
she begins to have a relationship with two of the most handsome and popular boys in school: Lee Su-ho, who is the first to
recognize her beyond her makeup, and Han Seo-jun, a "bad boy" who doesn't. He gets along well with Su-ho. Living in a
society where people are judged based on their physical appearance, Ju-gyeong navigates through her high school days and
college life as she struggles to keep her makeup-free face a secret and faces various challenges with her self-esteem, her
life. love and career

Main

Lim Ju-gyeong
a 21-year-old college film student, a skilled makeup artist and social media celebrity, Su-ho's first (and current) love, and Seo-
jun's ex-girlfriend; the protagonist of the webtoon. Ju-kyung enjoys reading horror comics and listening to heavy metal. In her
youth, she endured the harsh consequences of not conforming to society's beauty canon. In the family, she is treated less
favorably than her two relatively handsome brothers; At school, they are bullying her and treating her like an errand girl.
Searching for solutions on the Internet, she discovers a large number of makeup video tutorials and soon masters the art to
effectively transform herself into a "beautiful goddess." Aside from her family, the first two people to meet her true face are
Su-ho, her first love in high school whom she had previously met with his naked face a couple of times at a comic book store,
and Seo-jun. , who became her boyfriend.
Lee Su-ho
a 21-year-old Korean-Japanese college engineering student who is also taking cooking classes; Ju-gyeong's first love and
Seo-jun's former best friend in high school. Su-ho is the son of a famous Korean actor and a Japanese mother who is
ethnically Korean but was born in Japan. Back in high school, he became best friends with Seo-jun and Se-yeon, but after
unintentionally ignoring Se-yeon moments before the latter's suicide, he becomes the object of Seo-jun's hostility. . The
immense guilt over Se-yeon's death and broken friendship with Seo-jun turns him into a cold and distant boy who,
unbeknownst to everyone, cannot sleep well and who has also contemplated suicide. Sharing Ju-gyeong's love of horror
comics, he sometimes runs into her inside a comic book store they both frequent and soon develops feelings for her. In high
school, he is the first to recognize Ju-gyeong beyond his makeup. He later reconciles with Seo-jun after talking about what
really happened to him on the day of Se-yeon's suicide.
Han Seo-Jun
a 21-year-old solo K-pop artist from ST Entertainment; Ju-gyeong's ex-boyfriend and Su-ho's ex-best friend in high school.
Back in high school, Seo-jun became best friends with Su-ho and Se-yeon after he rescued them from bullies. He becomes
an idol trainee after being convinced by Se-yeon who, along with Su-ho, discovered his singing talent. After Se-yeon's
suicide, he broke off his friendship with Su-ho (they later reconciled) and stopped pursuing idol stardom. In high school, he
had a crush on Ju-gyeong, but did not win her over due to the mutual feelings between Su-ho and Ju-gyeong. When Su-ho
went to Japan for a few years, he became Ju-gyeong's boyfriend and resumes his idol training. She later reluctantly accepts
Ju-gyeong's desire to break up after Ju-gyeong suffered the pressure and online criticism associated with dating an upcoming
idol.

Planning for the webtoon that would later be known as True Beauty began when the webtoon's author Kim Na-young, better
known by her pen name Yaongyi, 7 was in her teens. 3 Published the first version of True Beauty on Naver Comics'
Challenge Comics, a platform for new self-publishing webtoons (similar to WEBTOON's CANVAS). In this version, the
protagonist was a man and Yaongyi described him as a boy with a "warm appearance" and an otaku.

After a break from webcomics, Yaongyi returned to work on True Beauty in her twenties and changed her lead to the current
female character Im Ju-kyung, but kept the webtoon's theme of "true beauty," i.e. kindness. One's interior is better than one's
physical appearance. 3 In an interview with Naver Webtoon, she explained that although readers may have enjoyed True
Beauty with a male protagonist, she changed the protagonist from a man to a woman since her goal was to create an
"accessible" and "easy to read" comic with a story that most readers can relate to. 8

Yaongyi also once worked as a fit model before venturing into webcomics. This, combined with her love for fashion and
cosmetics, helped her conceptualize True Beauty 7 3 9 which would later be published as a formal Naver webtoon starting
April 2, 2018 and published weekly on Mondays. . 2

Several official translations of True Beauty were published on Naver's non-Korean webtoon platforms as early as May 2018,
when the Thai and Indonesian versions were released starting on the 14th and 19th, respectively. 10 11 The Chinese version
followed on June 29, 2018 12 while the English version was released on August 14, 2018 13 In 2019, True Beauty was also
translated into Spanish and French, released on November 21 and 18 of December, respectively. 14 15

Adaptations
True Beauty has been adapted into a television series of the same name that premiered on tvN on December 9, 2020. 6 The
plan to adapt the webtoon into a television series was revealed in July 2019, 19 and the casting of Moon Ga-young, Cha Eun-
woo and Hwang In-yeop was confirmed in August 2020 20 Written by Lee Si- eun and directed by Kim Sang-hyeop, the
series focuses on the high school story arc of the original webtoon, but with considerable changes to the plot and
characterizations. The main characters Im Ju-kyung, Lee Su-ho and Han Seo-jun are played by Moon, Cha and Hwang
respectively, while the supporting character Kang Soo-jin was recast, and became one of the main characters of the series,
and is played by Park Yoo-na.
