Grade 11.1
Life Orientation Task (Activity one)

Activity 1: Goal Setting

1.1.1 Personal values can be defined as the principles

and standards that a person holds themselves
accountable to, and the ways in which they view
and treat themselves and others. Personal
values are formed through experiences and
personal growth, and can be the foundation for
guiding a person's actions and decisions. A
person's values can be the basis for their moral
and ethical compass, and are essential for
shaping their personal identity and character.

1.1.2 For example, a person with a value for fairness

may be less likely to make a decision that they
perceive as being unfair to someone else.
Additionally, a person with a value for
compassion may be more likely to make a
decision that is compassionate toward others.
Other potential personal values that can
influence decision-making include things like
honesty, integrity, loyalty, generosity and
responsibility.

1.1.3 Long-term goals provide a sense of purpose and

direction in life when they provide a clear sense
of direction and focus. Long-term goals provide a
sense of meaning and fulfilment when they
represent something that is important to a
person, and something that is achievable
through consistent effort and dedication. Long-
term goals give a person a sense of a greater
purpose and direction to their existence, and
provide a framework for living life with purpose.
Having long-term goals can also provide a sense
of stability and consistency in life, as it helps to
create a sense of overall direction and
progression.

1.1.4 Discipline, focus, accountability, dedication,

perseverance, resourcefulness, problem-solving,
creativity, resilience, and patience. Additionally,
having a supportive environment that provides
encouragement and feedback can be helpful in
achieving long-term goals.

1.1.5 The media, such as television, movies, social

media and other forms of digital media, may
have the power to influence the personal values
that people hold and the goals they set for
themselves. This is due to the way in which
media is often structured to reinforce certain
values and goals, which can over time lead to
people adopting those values and goals as their
own. This can be especially powerful for younger
individuals who are more likely to be influenced
by these forms of media.

Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), that provide
funds for students to help cover their university or
college fees.
2. Scholarships: Scholarships are a form of financial aid
available to students who meet certain criteria, such as
having good academic performance or financial need.
Scholarships are often awarded by the institutions
themselves or by outside organisations.
3. Another form of financial assistance for students in
higher education is grants. Unlike loan financing, grants
provide a direct non-repayable cash allowance, and
typically cover specific expenses. The student is not
required to repay the grant, but they must meet certain
criteria that varies by institution.
The student should check with the institution they
attend for more specific details about the eligibility
criteria and the actual amount of funding available.
Some schools may offer both grants and loans,
depending on the student's particular needs and
circumstances, and may require repayment of either or
both depending on the type granted.
1.2.4 Cost: Higher education is often too expensive for
many young people in South Africa, and they must
depend on various forms of financial aid and assistance
such as grants and loans.
Lack of access: Many young people live in rural areas
and don't have access to quality higher education
institutions.

The visibility of TVET colleges can be improved by

well as increasing their online presence and reaching
out to the younger students.

and apprenticeships can be highly beneficial for
students and should be promoted more widely. These

gain valuable skills and knowledge.

available in the field of trade and vocational
professions: It is important to raise awareness about
the various paths and job opportunities available in the
field of trade and vocational professions. This can be
done through seminars, information sessions and
campaigns aimed at young people and their parents.
Offer greater support for students studying trade and
vocational professions: The Department of Higher
Education and Training can provide greater financial
and academic support for students studying trade and
vocational professions. This can include providing more
grants and loans, as well as offering additional tutoring
and mentorship opportunities.

2.1.1
You have a say in how your community is run: Voting
gives you a voice to participate in the decision-making
process of your local government. It allows you to
make choices that affect the issues that matter to you
the most, such as infrastructure, education, and health
care. You can contribute to the process of democracy:
Voting is considered to be a fundamental principle of
democracy, as it allows citizens to have a direct say in
decisions that affect their lives and livelihood. You
create a sense of community responsibility: Local
elections are also seen as an important way to promote a
sense of civic responsibility and contribute to the vitality
of the community. Engaging in voting can help create a
sense of ownership and pride in the wellbeing of the
community.
You can hold people accountable: Another major benefit
of participating in local government elections is that it
allows you to hold your representatives accountable for
their actions and decisions. This is an important aspect of
democracy, and ensures that the government is working
towards the interests of the population.

2.1.2
Increased accessibility: Unlike traditional petitions,
which require individual signatures and can sometimes
be time-consuming to collect, online petitions allow
individuals to easily sign through their computer,
mobile device, or via email. This increases accessibility
and participation among citizens, particularly from
those who may be less mobile or live in rural areas.
Greater ease of communication: For local
governments, online petitions can provide a more
efficient and cost-effective means of communication.
Instead of printing and sending out letters or holding
physical meetings, online petitions create a direct and
more accessible platform for citizens to make their
voices heard. This allows for much greater
transparency and two-way communication between
the government and its constituents.

2.1.3
Increased community partnerships: Local governments
could work more closely with local communities and
organisations to identify areas where service delivery
can be improved. This could include consulting with
local community groups, conducting surveys and focus
groups, and organising community meetings and
events. By working with local communities, local
governments can identify areas of need and better
understand the needs of the population.Community-
driven initiatives: Local communities can also take the
initiative to propose and implement initiatives that
address specific areas of service delivery. This can
include organising volunteer

Activity 2.2

2.2.1
Nation building involves building a sense of common
identity among the citizenry, establishing institutions
and systems that serve the public good, developing
infrastructure and institutions, and creating strong
social cohesion and a unified identity. Nation building
relies on the commitment and participation of all
citizens, and involves creating a sense of pride and
belonging.

2.2.2
Economic inequality: Economic inequality can create
division and discord within a nation, as it can lead to a
gap in resources and opportunities. This can result in a
lack of social cohesion, trust, and solidarity and can
create a divide within the population.
Poverty: Poverty can lead to instability and lack of
economic development, as it can lead to lack of
resources and lack of access to basic necessities such
as education, health care, and infrastructure. This can
create a cycle of poverty and further impede economic
growth and nation building.

2.2.3
It can create a negative and hostile environment, affect
performance, and create a sense of tension and
unease. Negative spectator behaviour can include
verbal abuse, slurs, derogatory statements, and
physical violence. This can have an impact on both
players and other spectators, as they may feel a sense
of fear or discomfort and even be discouraged from
participating in future events. Negative spectator
behaviour can also affect the perception of the sport
and the reputation of the organisation or venue
hosting the event.
2.2.4
Civic engagement and volunteerism programs provide
opportunities for the government and citizens to work
together on positive initiatives that contribute to the
development and progress of the nation. These include
community service programs, clean-up campaigns, tree
planting, education and skill-development initiatives,
and disaster response and management initiatives. By
fostering a sense of collective responsibility and
involvement, these programs can help forge a strong
civic identity and promote citizen participation and
ownership.Inclusion of minority groups: Inclusion of
minority groups and marginalised communities is an
important part of nation-building, as it fosters a sense
of inclusivity and diversity. This can be achieved
through positive behaviour programs, such as anti-
discriminatory policies and programs, providing equal
access to services and opportunities, and promoting
inter-cultural exchange. By implementing these
behaviours, the government can promote a culture of
acceptance and respect, and contribute to the
development and progress of a cohesive and inclusive
nation.
