1. Draining the Potable Water System
A. Reference Information

B. Tools and Equipment

Commercially Available Container, 5-US Gallon (19-Liter) or Larger
NOTE: Refer to the Illustrated Tool and Equipment Manual to make sure that you use the correct
equipment configuration.
C. Setup
(1) Obey all the electrical/electronic safety precautions (AMM TASK 24-00-00-910-801).
(2) Make sure all of the faucets in the aircraft are closed.
(3) Gain access to the water tank.
(4) Make sure the tank fill cap is installed.
(5) Connect electrical power to the aircraft (AMM TASK 24-00-00-861-801).

D. Procedure
CAUTION: IF THE AIRCRAFT CABIN WILL BE SUBJECTED TO FREEZING TEMPERATURES,
THEN THE POTABLE WATER SYSTEM MUST BE DRAINED.
CAUTION: WHILE THE AIRCRAFT IS PARKED IN BELOW FREEZING TEMPERATURES, THE
VALVES SHOULD REMAIN PARTIALLY OPEN AFTER DRAINING TO PREVENT
WATER FROM BEING TRAPPED IN THE VALVES.
CAUTION: IF THE AMBIENT AIR TEMPERATURE IS BELOW FREEZING 32 °F (0 °C),
MAINTAIN CABIN POWER ON UNTIL ALL WATER HAS BEEN DRAINED.
NOTE: If there are any discrepancies between the following instructions and the water system
placard instructions, follow the instructions on the water system placards.
(1) With power applied:
(a) Put a container under the aft drain mast to catch water as it drains from the water
system.
(b) Open the lavatory sink drain.
(c) Remove the vanity closeout panel inboard of the sink to access the water system
PURGE switch.
(d) Open the hot and cold water faucets.
(e) Push the water system PURGE switch.
(f) Leave the hot and cold water faucets open until all the water has drained out of the aft
drain mast.
NOTE: The drain valve stays open for an additional 3 minutes after the water tank is
empty.
(g) Close the hot and cold water faucets when all of the water has drained from the water
system.
(h) Install the closeout panel.
(2) Without power applied:
(a) Put a container under the aft drain mast to catch water as it drains from the water
system.
(b) Open the sink drain.
(c) Open the hot and cold water faucets.
(d) In the lower vanity cabinet, open the aft door.
(e) In the center storage compartment, open the access door for the water system pallet.

(f) Rotate the water system pallet drain valve handle to the open (vertical) position.
(g) Leave the hot and cold water faucets open until all the water has drained out of the aft
drain mast.
NOTE: Wait at least 3 minutes after the water tank is empty before closing the drain
valve.
(h) Rotate the water system pallet drain valve handle to the closed (horizontal) position
after all of the water has drained from the water system.
(i) Close the access door for the water system pallet.
(j) Close the vanity cabinet door.
(k) Close the hot and cold water faucets.
E. Closeout
(1) Remove the electrical power from the aircraft (AMM TASK 24-00-00-861-802).
(2) Remove all tools, equipment, and unwanted materials from the work area.

2. Filling the Potable Water System

NOTE: Refer to the Illustrated Tool and Equipment Manual to make sure that you use the correct

C. Setup
(1) Make sure all of the faucets in the aircraft are closed.
(2) Gain access to the water tank.
D. Procedure
CAUTION: IF CABIN TEMPERATURE IS BELOW 32 °F (0 °C) AND ABOVE -4 °F (-20 °C),
TURN CABIN POWER ON AT LEAST 20 MINUTES PRIOR TO FILL. IF CABIN
TEMPERATURE IS BELOW -4 °F (-20 °C), ALLOW CABIN TO WARM UP TO
ABOVE -4 °F (-20 °C), THEN TURN CABIN POWER ON AT LEAST 20 MINUTES
PRIOR TO FILL.
NOTE: The water tank may be filled in place or removed from the aircraft and filled.
(1) To fill the water tank in place:
(a) Remove the tank fill cap on the water tank located in the baggage compartment.
(b) Fill the tank with potable water.
(c) Install the tank fill cap on the water tank fill port.
(2) To remove the water tank and fill:
(a) Remove the water tank (SMM TASK 38-10-01-000-801).
(b) Fill the tank with potable water.
(c) Install the water tank (SMM TASK 38-10-01-400-801).

E. Closeout

D. Setup
(1) Obey all the electrical/electronic safety precautions (AMM TASK 24-00-00-910-801).
(2) Close each circuit breaker that follows:

(4) Put a container under the aft drain mast to catch water as it drains from the water system.

E. Procedure
WARNING: MAKE SURE THE WATER SYSTEM IS DEPRESSURIZED BEFORE PROCEEDING.
CAUTION: TO AVOID THE POSSIBILITY OF DAMAGE TO TANK AND WATER LINES, THE
FOLLOWING PROCEDURE SHOULD BE USED TO STERILIZE THE WATER
SYSTEM.
(1) Drain the water system (SMM TASK 12-15-00-680-801).
(2) Remove the tank fill cap.
(3) Dilute some household liquid chlorine bleach, in a ratio equal to 0.2 ounces (6 ml) of bleach
per 10 US gallons (38 liters) of water, in a small amount of water and add to the water tank
through the manual fill port.
(4) Fill the water system with the chlorinated potable water (SMM TASK 12-15-00-610-801).
(5) Push the drain lever to open the sink drain.
(6) Open the hot and cold faucets until chlorinated water flows from the faucet.
(7) Close the hot and cold faucets.
(8) Top off water and let stand for 1 hour.
(9) Drain the water system (SMM TASK 12-15-00-680-801).
(10) Refill the water system with clean potable water (SMM TASK 12-15-00-610-801). Flow
water through the hot and cold faucets for approximately 1 minute.
(11) Drain the water system (SMM TASK 12-15-00-680-801).
(12) Dissolve some baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), in a ratio equal to 1.5 tablespoons (22 ml)
of baking soda per 10 US gallons (38 liters) of water, in a small amount of water and add to
the water tank through the manual fill port.
(13) Refill the water system with clean potable water (SMM TASK 12-15-00-610-801).
(14) Open the hot and cold faucets so that water flows for approximately 1 minute.
(15) Close the hot and cold faucets.
(16) Drain the water system (SMM TASK 12-15-00-680-801).
(17) Refill the water system with clean potable water (SMM TASK 12-15-00-610-801).
(18) Replace the tank fill cap.

F. Closeout
(1) Remove the electrical power from the aircraft (AMM TASK 24-00-00-861-802).
(2) Remove all tools, equipment, and unwanted materials from the work area.
