FACTORY ACCEPTANCE TEST PROCEDURE FOR ELECTRICAL
HEAT TRACING
1. TEST PROCEDURE FOR ELECTRIC HEAT TRACING CABLE
1.1 INTRODUCTION
This document states the procedures of factory inspection and test for Electrical Heat Tracing
System, which includes electrical heating cable, Cable accessories, Components (Junction
Boxes & Thermostat).
The proposed test procedures are as follows with applicable code & standards, acceptance
criteria for inspection activities and method as mentioned in ITP.
1.2 VISUAL CHECKS
1.2.1 Marking Cable type
Heat Tracing Cables shall be clearly and permanently surface marked in accordance with IEC
60079-0 and shall additionally include the following information.
a) The symbol provided for the type of protection used for trace heating shall be “e” for
increased safety, which does not preclude the use of additional types of protection
appropriate for the components intended to be supplied or recommended for use with the
trace heaters.
b) The required serial number or batch number may be substituted with the month and year
of manufacture, date coding, or equivalent.
c) The rated or operating voltage for parallel cable i.e. 220 – 277 V AC.
1.2.2 Electrical Heating Cable Marking
The following information shall be printed legibly on the surface of the outer jacket throughout
the length; it shall be repeated at one-meter intervals.
1) Trademark
2) Catalogue Number or Model Number
3) Rated Voltage
4) Approvals
5) Temperature Rating
6) Length Marking

1.3 ROUTINE TEST
1.3.1 Cable Insulation Resistance Test as per IEC 60079-30-1
The insulation resistance shall be measured on the sample before and after the dielectric test.
The resistance of the insulation shall be measured between conductors and the metallic outer
covering or a specially applied conductive metal ground plane, by means of DC voltage of 500
V for polymer insulated heaters. The measured value shall not be less than 50 Mega ohms.
1.3.2 Continuity test
Switch the Multimeter to continuity mode. Connect both the leads of Multimeter to the
copper bus wires of Heat Tracing Cables. A beep sound is heard in the case of cable continuity.
1.3.3 Conductor resistance test.
Switch the Multimeter to continuity mode. Connect both the leads of Multimeter to the
copper bus wires of Heat Tracing Cables. The resistance of cable is shown on the Multimeter
screen.
1.3.4 Electrical Heating Cable Dielectric Test as per Section 5.2.1 of IEC 60079-30-1
The dielectric test shall be performed by Heat Trace on the Electrical heating cable at factory.
The test voltage shall be applied at High voltage AC and maintained for 30 seconds without
dielectric breakdown.
The test voltage waveform shall be essentially sinusoidal, with a frequency of 45 Hz to 65 Hz.
The test voltage shall be applied between the heating device’s conductors and the metallic
covering, or a specially applied conductive metal ground plane. Alternatively, the dielectric
test may be conducted by submerging the heating cable in tap water at room temperature.
The test voltage shall be applied between the heating conductors and the water.
2. TEST PROCEDURE FOR JUNCTION BOXES & RESISTANCE TEMPERATURE DETECTOR
2.1 Visual Check & Dimensional check
Visual inspection shall be carried out as per product data sheet & General arrangement
drawing for apparatus inspection, dimensions, support bracket, number of terminals, number
of cable entries.
Check of Ex & IP Certification.
