Professor Socks

By Jennifer Clevenger

Materials: • 2 skeins of Cascade Fixation yarn (98.3% cotton, 1.7% elastic; 100
yards per 50g skein), shown in color 6995 Grape Wine
• 1 set of four US size 2 double pointed needles
• Scrap yarn (for provisional cast on)
• Yarn needle

Gauge: 8 st x 12 rows = 1 inch in stockinette stitch

Size: Small – 8” Medium – 9” Large – 10”

Notes:
• The instructions for this pattern are written for the use of four dpns because that is just
the way I prefer to work. If you are more comfortable using five dpns, take the
instructions for Needle #1 and evenly distribute those stitches over two needles.
• All increases are done by strand increase method (by picking up the bar in between two
stitches and knitting it through the back loop).
• Right Twist: Knit two stitches together but do not slip them off of the needle. Then
knit through just the first stitch and slip both stitches off of the left needle.
• Left Twist: Knit the second stitch on the left needle through the back loop but do not
slip it off of the needle. Then knit both stitches through the back loops and slip off of the
needle.

Row 1: K27 (31,35), wrap the last stitch and turn your work. To wrap a stitch, you
take your working yarn and bring it forward between two stitches (as if to purl), then
slip the stitch from your left needle onto your right needle. Take your working yarn
and move it back behind (as if to knit, see photo) and slip the stitch from your right
needle back onto your left needle. Then turn your work and begin purling.

Row 2: P26 (30,34), wrap the last stitch and turn your work.
Row 3: Knit to the last stitch before the wrapped stitch, wrap the next stitch and turn.
Row 4: Purl to the last stitch before the wrapped stitch, wrap the next stitch and turn.

Repeat Row 3 & 4 until you have 8 (9,9) wrapped stitches on either side of your heel
and 12 (14, 18) “live” stitches in the middle.

Row 1: K12 (14, 18), pick up the next stitch and its wrap and knit them together. Wrap
the next stitch (making now two wraps on that stitch) and turn.
Row 2: P13 (15, 19), pick up the next stitch and its wrap and purl them together. Wrap
the next stitch (making now two wraps on that stitch) and turn.
Row 3: Knit to the next wrapped stitch, pick up both wraps along with the stitch and
knit them all together. Wrap the next stitch and turn.
Row 4: Purl to the next wrapped stitch, pick up both wraps along with the stitch and
purl them all together. Wrap the next stitch and turn.

Repeat Rows 3 & 4 until all 28 (32, 36) stitches are knit and “live” on the needles
again. Return to knitting in the round.

Leg
Round 1: Needle #1: Continue with in pattern from where you left off before the
heel from either Chart A-1, B-1 or C-1

Cuff
Round 1: *K1, P1* repeat * to the end of the round.

Repeat Round 1 five more times. This makes a ½” cuff. More rounds can be worked
to make a larger cuff if desired, for more stay-up power.

Bind off using sewn bind off method or other stretchy bind off of your choice.

Weave ends in and block.
