JOB APPLICATION

Such a letter is generally written by a qualified person in reply to an advertisement in order to offer his / her
services. The job application has a covering letter of application (same format as an official letter), followed
by biodata. The biodata focuses on the applicant’s personal details, qualifications and skills.

POINTS to NOTE:
Covering Letter
I. Introductory Para: Begin by referring to an advertisement seen in the newspaper / magazine or online.
II. Qualification: One’s qualifications should be related to the job applied for and thus, clearly stated. One
should show clearly that one is eligible for the post. Awards / achievements in related fields, if any,
may be mentioned, too.
III. Experience: Give information relevant to the post, stating the latest one held. Mention any project or
work undertaken in school / college.
IV. Testimonials — Written certificate of character and /or of professional competence may be enclosed,
even if not asked.
V. Presentation & Language: The letter must be written correctly, inclusive of the designation and
address, the spacing of lines, margins, and corrections made and even one’s signature. The language
used is very formal, precise and to the point. While stressing on one’s qualities, avoid boasting or
pleading.

It should include the following:
1. Name in full (block letters)
2. Gender
3. Date of Birth
4. Father’s name (full)
5. Mother’s name (full)
6. Present Address
7. Contact Number
8. Email
9. Marital Status [Single / Unmarried / Married / Divorced]
10. Nationality
11. Educational Qualifications (in tabular form) — Secondary school, College / University, Technical /
Professional degree, any additional degree.
12. Work Experience — Present employment to past ones (time period, post held, name of the
organisation)
13. Skills may be included — requirements in the question may be converted into skills
14. Achievements, if any, may be mentioned — medallist at university / awards won, etc.
15. Present Salary / Expected Salary (optional)
16. Add information like hobbies, languages known, membership of societies, publications, travel, etc.
17. References — Include names of at least two persons known to you professionally (not relatives) as
references. These are provided so the prospective employer may ask him / her directly for information
regarding the applicant.
