Introduction
Nelson Mandela the once said I learned that
courage was not the absence of fear, but the
triumph over it. “The brave man is not who does
not feel afraid, but who conquers that fear”.
Courage is a choice that we can make over fear.
Being courageous does not mean that we are
not afraid. Being courageous mean we are
fearful but we choose to face our fears and take
a step forward. Personally for me, it helps to
figure out the first small step to make and
maybe a couple of deep breathes to move
ahead.
“Courage is not the absence of fear but triumph
over it”. by Nelson Mandela.
His full name was Nelson Rohilala Mandela.
This extract is from his autobiography, "Long
Walk To Freedom It was lath May, when he was
ready to take oath as the president of South
Africa. It was day Zenani he was lovely autumn
accompanied by On the podium, Mr. first sworn
in as his daughter De Klerk was second deputy
president Then Thabo Mbeki was sworn in as
first deputy president. When it was This turn, he
pledged to obey and uphold the constitution
and to devote - himself to the well being of the
Republic and its people.
On that day of inaugration, he overwhelmed
with a was sense of history. In the first decade
of the twentieth cen and few years after the
bitter before his century, Anglo-Boer war own
birth, the white skinned people of South Africa
patched up their difference and erected a
discrimination against system of racial the
dark-skinned people of their own land. Now in
the last decade of the twentieth century and his
decade own eight as a man that system had
been overturned forever and replaced by one
that recognised the rights and freedom of all
people, regardless of the colour of their own
skin.
Mandela said that mineral and gems that My
country, beneath is in the its soil, but 9 have
always known that its greatest wealth is its
people, finer than the purest diamonds. He said
that it was from those comrades in the struggle
that he learned the meaning of courage . Time
and again he had seen men stand up attacks
and torture without breaking, showing a
strength and resilence that defines the
imagination. He learned that courage is the
absence of fear, but the "triumph over it. The
brave man is not when does not feel afraid, but
the one who conquers that fear.
COURAGE: A Choice
A courageous person is someone who isn’t
shaken by circumstances, may experience fear
but doesn’t live in it and is secure and strong no
matter what.
“Their circumstances will never shake them
and others will never forget their example. They
will not live in fear or dread of what may come,
for their hearts are firm, even secure in their
faith. Steady and strong, they will not be afraid,
but will calmly face their every foe until they all
go down in defeat.”
Courage can be defined as “the ability to do
something that frightens one, or having strength
in the face of pain.”
As the scripture above describes, a courageous
person is someone who isn’t shaken by
circumstances, may experience fear but
doesn’t live in it and is secure and strong no
matter what.
It can be easy to look at what it means to be
courageous and think that this must be some
kind of innate quality, that some people are
more courageous while others tend to shy away
from difficulty and taking risks.
However, the ability to do something that
frightens you is a choice that God calls each of
us to make and wants to help us work through
that holds us back so that we can become the
people the above scriptures describe.
What Can Learnt
From Fear
Fear is a primal feeling arising from when we
feel threatened, and can have physical
symptoms such as sweaty hands and an
increased heart rate.
Things that can be learnt from fear
1. Fear means GROWTH
Fear tells us we are moving towards the
outskirts of our comfort zone. We are doing
something unfamiliar, we are taking a new
challenge and new learning skill. This means we
are growing and growth means that once we get
beyond the uncomfortable bit, we will be bigger,
better, and brighter than before!
2. Things are never as bad as they seem
This may seem obvious, but it still can stop us
in our tracks. Our imagination is usually a bit
too vivid, and our worst-case scenarios can go
above and beyond the worst that could actually
happen.
In most cases, the thing we fear is never as bad
as we think it will be. When we are trying to
make a decision to leave, to quit or to do
something new, we lack the perspective to see
further than the familiar front yard. And
everything unfamiliar is automatically scary.
3. What's the best thing that could happen?*
If we are to start imagining the future and
creating events in our heads (because
essentially that's what it was) why wouldn’t we
rather think about the most awesome thing that
could happen: the best case scenario instead
of the worst.
Obsessing about worst case scenarios shifts
our perspective to notice and find "evidence" of
this negativity unfolding in our lives, and we
steer ourselves into the worst-off direction.
Focusing on the best case scenario will ease
feelings of fear, and move you into a positive
direction. Our thoughts have tremendous
power to create our personal universes, so
make sure you create a good one
4. We are always stronger than we think
When we go right at it (and through it) fear can
teach us so much about our personal power
and strength. There is no other feeling like the
triumph you feel when you realize you did not
get defeated, when you realize that instead, you
actually made or did it!
You succeeded and even though not every try is
perfect, who cares?! This will build your
confidence, broaden your comfort zone, and
make you play on a whole new level of what is
possible!
Think of your yoga practice. Sometimes it can
also take us to the edges of our comfort zones,
only to make us realize that we are strong! We
can stand on our hands, even though we
sometimes doubted it.
5.Fear is part of life and does not need to be
eliminated
Maybe the most important lesson is this: we do
not need to eliminate fear from our lives. We
can welcome it, we can cope with it, and we
can proceed in spite of it!
The best decisions in life are rarely the easiest
ones. Or rather, they should feel easy within,
but often come with some level of fear. To leave
a long-term relationship is not easy, but if you
know it's the right thing to do, you know what
you need to do. Quitting your job and following
your gut will not come without fear, but it will
come with big rewards.
Benefits of Having
Yes , being courageous and fearless comes with
a lot of benefits. Here are some benefits :
1. Accept Your Fear For What It Is
Most people handle their fear in one of two
ways: They give up and bury it in other emotions
and actions, or they grab onto the fear and blow
it out of proportion.
When you are fearless, you acknowledge your
fear for what it is — your body’s concern for
your safety. You take that fear into account,
adjust your actions accordingly, and move
forward.
If your safety is truly at risk and you can't take
any protective measures, you probably won't
follow through with the idea. But if it's a matter
of flight versus fight, you'll get through the hard
part for the thrill of the glory on the other side.
2. They Never Stop Growing The only times
when growth occurs is when you are no longer
in your comfort zone.
Life is meant to be lived, not repeated in
present patterns. Those by definition are called
ruts. Jumping out of the realm of complacency
into brand new, uncharted territory is the job of
a fearless person. Because of this, people are
always growing and learning.
3.Rejection doesn't face them
Once you overcome the fear of rejection, it's
easier to do anything in life.
Most of our dreams are killed by the words,
"what would people think." If the thoughts and
opinions of complete strangers don't concern
you, you can focus on fulfilling your dreams and
goals.
Fearless people understand that rejection is
required to accomplish great things. Just look at
J.K. Rowling, for example. She was rejected 12
times for her Harry Potter book before it was
published.
4. They know themselves
Being 'fearless' doesn't mean that you don't feel
fear. It means you have the skills to analyze any
problem. As you think through problems, you
begin to analyze yourself. Why do you have this
fear? Is it because of past experiences or
potential consequences? Are you hardwired to
feel that fear biologically?
Once you dig deep and identify your fears, you
can overcome any mental obstacle you
encounter.
5. Asking for help comes easily
You might not realize this, but a lot of people
have a difficult time asking for help. They worry
about bothering the other person or getting
rejected. For a fearless person, turning to
someone else for assistance is second nature.
They don’t worry about it because they know it’s
a part of life. We can't do everything alone and
any job is easier when two or more put their
heads together.
How And Why To
There are multiple ways to overcome fear, some
of which include:
*Identify your fear:* In order to complete a
challenge, we must first identify it and set a
goal.
*Recognize the fear and take it to your
advantage.*
*Adopt a growth mindset.*
*Visualize your goal:* Seeing yourself
succeeding, and immersing yourself in your
goal is the best way to stay motivated.
Why :
“Fear is simply because you are not living with
life, you are living in your mind.”
— Sadhguru
Fear is not about what has happened, it's about
what may happen. It's always about the future,
which has not yet occurred. This means that
one is fearing what is not in existence. This
implies that one is suffering the non-existent.
This suffering considerably decreases our
quality of life as we suffer unnecessarily.
Some apparent effects of fear are as follows:
- Immune system dysfunction
- Sleep/wake cycle disruption
- Eating disorders
- Obsessive-compulsive thoughts.
Fighting Against
Fear is Hard But
There is no doubt that fighting fear is hard. Happening
something that a person is afraid of is one of the bravest
things and makes us a powerful and better human being.
One may experience anxiety from approaching fear but
conquering it is one of our greatest achievements.
We should fight our fears because it helps us grow, it helps
in triggering a growth mindset in our character. Facing off
fears makes us a person of action, change, and success.
For example, if someone is afraid of public speaking which
must hinder his career later on. However, avoiding this fear
will make it much scarier.
Overcoming our fears will eliminate it from being a factor
in our decision-making process and as a result fear will no
longer bias in our lives.
Mention Some of Your
Worst Fear And You
Managed To overcome
➢ What was your worst fear?
I was afraid of drowning when I was a kid. I usually
panicked when I was in deep warm water, when I was not
able to see the bottom surface.
➢ How did you overcome your fear?
I started to learn swimming in summers with my cousins.
After I was able to swim my fear turned to fascination and
now I am no longer afraid of deep water.
➢ What will you advise people struggling to fight their
fears?
We must acknowledge our fears and overcome it
accordingly. We should take little steady steps to fight our
fears to avoid strain and trauma.
Famous Personalities Who
Overcome Their Fear
Warren Buffett
Warren Buffett is an American businessman
and philanthropist. His success story is full of
huge hurdles which he overcame to reach his
current position. Buffett was terrified of public
speaking. As a result, when he was in college,
he avoided all the public speaking courses.
When he started his stockbroking career at the
age of 21, he realized that he had two choices:
either force himself to face his fears or avoid
them and never reach his full potential. Buffett
decided to choose the better one and faced his
fear head-on by enrolling in a course for public
speaking.
Currently, Warren Buffett is the world's sixth
wealthiest person.
Mahatma Gandhi
During his student life, Gandhi suffered from
frequent panic attacks. He had a particularly
agonizing experience during a speech he was
asked to give in London. After reading one line
from the message he had prepared, he could no
longer speak and asked someone else to read
the rest of the speech for him. Fear of crowd
continued to haunt him later in his life when he
became a lawyer. When Gandhi came to India,
his desire to see a free India overcame his fear
of public speaking. Gandhi learned by public
speaking in India and his confidence increased.
As a result, he later proceeded to be one of the
greatest leaders.
Following things we learnt from this project:
1. Courage is not the absence of fear but a
triumph over it.
2. The brave man is not who doesn’t fear but
one who conquers that fear.
3. In any fearful situation, we must not panic.
We must hold ourselves and try our best to
conquer that fear and get victory over that fear.
4. I learned how to fight against tough situations
and overcome fear.
5. I learned how being courageous is beneficial
in fearful situations.
6. I understand that fighting against fear is hard
but worth it.
7. It also improved my communication skills.
