Ernest Miller

Hemingway
His life
Ernest Miller Hemingway was born in
Oak Park, Illinois (just outside of
Chicago) on July 21, 1899. His father,
Clarence, was a medical doctor and his
mother, Grace, was a voice and piano
teacher. As a young boy, his father
taught him how to hunt and fish the
untouched wilderness of Northern
Michigan.
FAMILY
Right away in Horton’s Bay, the young
boy learned a delicate appreciation for
the beauty and intricacy of nature, as he
could often be found along the many
streams of the area. Although his
writing carried him to many large cities
like Paris, Chicago, and Toronto, the
undying peace and serenity Ernest
found in Mother Nature continued
throughout his life and is certainly
evident in his many works.

Hemingway graduated the Oak Park public
school system in 1917 and followed his
interest in writing to the Kansas City Star,
where he served as a young reporter. In just
his short time at the paper, he learned some
aspects of style that would follow him as an
accomplished writer for all his days, as the
Star emphasized short sentences, short
paragraphs, active verbs, authenticity,
compression, and clarity. Hemingway later
said: "Those were the best rules I ever
learned for the business of writing. I've never
forgotten them."
Hemingway’s personal experiences were a critical foundation of his works. His
time as an ambulance driver during World War I influenced his views on life and
death and inspired his novel A Farewell to Arms. His involvement in the Spanish
Civil War as a correspondent enriched his understanding of the human condition,
and the power of informed writing was influential for the novel For Whom the Bell
Tolls. Hemingway’s literary career took flight in the 1920s when he was living in an
expatriate community in Paris. Surrounded by writers and artists, this
transformative time in life gave him a front-row seat to diverse and intellectual
influences, which played a vital role in his writing.
War wounds, two plane crashes, four marriages and several affairs took
their toll on Hemingway's hereditary predispositions and contributed to
his declining health. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and
insomnia in his later years. His mental condition was exacerbated by
chronic alcoholism, diabetes and liver failure.

After an unsuccessful treatment
with electro-convulsive therapy, he
suffered severe amnesia and his
physical condition worsened. The
memory loss obstructed his writing
and everyday life. He committed
suicide in 1961. Posthumous
publications revealed a
considerable body of his hidden
writings, that was edited by his
fourth wife, Mary, and also by his
son Patrick Hemingway.
