 PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson the student should be able
 to:

               INTRODUCTION TO CRAFT
 Craft is the ability to skillfully beautify or create beautiful and useful materials. It
 is similar to decorative art. It refers to activities like weaving, tapestry, carving,
 pottery and leather craft.
     TYPES OF CRAFTS
    1. Weaving: this involves cloth weaving, basketry, cane weaving, and straw
       weaving.
    2. Pottery: this involves making pots and utensils.
    3. Metal craft: this involves bronze work, brass work, blacksmithing,
       goldsmithery.
    4. Carving: this involves wood carving, stone carving, horn carving, ivory
       carving, calabash carving.
    5. Leather craft: this involves drum making, shoes or bag making, ornaments
       for horses, quivers a container for arrow and scabbard used in covering a
       sword
    6. Fabric decoration: this involves tie and dye, batik, appliqué and embroidery.
   USES OF BASKETS
1.      The round shaped basket is used for carrying farm produce
2.        They are used for storing goods.
3.        The small and intricate shapes are used for decoration.
CLOTH WEAVING
Cloth weaving is mainly done with cotton. There are two major looms used for
weaving cloth.
a)        horizontal loom which is mainly used by men
b)        The vertical loom used by women
  Task: explain briefly the process of weaving a basket and a cloth.
 USES OF HAND- WOVEN CLOTHES
1.        They are worn on special occasions.
2.        They are used as souvenirs for visitors (foreigners) coming into Nigeria.
3.        For making bags, belts, shoes, etc
4.        They can be used in making a sash. A sash is a typical African fabric that is
used for carrying a baby.

        1. It is used for decorations at home.
