Finished size: 185 x 35 cm [73 x 14 in]
“Windripple” is an elongated triangular shawl with short row inserts.

Knitting with short rows is not nearly as complicated as you might think!
Just follow this pattern row-by-row, and everything will work out.

Materials
Yarn:
– Contrasting color (CC, multi):
Lang Yarn Magic, yardage: 420 m [460 yds] = 100 g [3.5 oz], 150 g [5.3 oz] total,
– Main color (MC, for rests, solid) Lang Yarn solid-colored sock yarn,
yardage = 420 m [460 yds] = 100 g [3.5 oz], 100 g [3.5 oz], total

Tools
– (1) circular knitting needle 3.0 mm [US2.5], 120 cm [48 in] long
– (5) stitch markers (in different colors: 1 red, 1 blue, 1 green, 1 orange, 1 black)

Abbreviations: ** = repeat between asterisks

CC = contrasting color, multi green-m = green marker DSt = Double stitch (turning
MC = main color, solid orange-m = orange marker stitch)
m = stitch marker black-m = black stitch marker k = knit
red-m = red stitch marker selv st = selvedge stitch p = purl
blue-m = blue stitch marker st(s) = stitch(es) w-st = wrapped stitch

Gauge: garter stitch, after washing

28 sts and 25 ridges (50 rows) = 10 x 10 cm [4 x 4 in]

Please read through all of the instructions before you start working.

Technique: How to do the Turning Stitch = Double Stitch (DSt)

Within the row, knit up to the spot where you need to turn (This will be within the
knitted fabric and not at the end of a row. There will be stitches after this spot to the
end of the row, those stay un-worked for the time being). Turn work. You are now on
the other side on the fabric. Here, transfer the first stitch (within the fabric, the first
stitch after you have turned) to the right needle, pulling the working yarn tight. This
regular stitch has turned into a Double stitch or Turning Stitch – it has now two little
“legs”. Continue with your new row as instructed.
Please note! Those two little legs are still considered one stitch, and when you
encounter them again in the next row, treat both legs as one stitch by working them
off together and counting them as one stitch worked.
The Double stitch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhrJ64imtNk Video by Michael Schmidt

How rows are structured:

Rows are written like this: DSt + k15 – DSt + k16
The first number is for the RS row: pull out the DSt, then knit 15 sts. Turn work.
The second number after the n-dash (“–”) is for the WS row immediately following:
S ü de n.
f e r -
tauf
(after you’ve turned) pull out the DSt, then knit 16 sts
“Turn work before the DSt” is not explicitly stated in the instructions!

Stitch markers: While you knit, move the markers from the left needle to the right needle so they stay
in the same position in the row but move up to a higher row. Leave the markers in until the instructions
tell you to remove them.

Color changes: To avoid sewing in ends within a different color, don’t cut the working yarn of the just
worked color that won’t be used in the next row. Instead, in the next RS row, weave the unused color
into the second stitch of the row. This makes for a neat invisible right edge in your knitting. Weaving in
unused color: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjQlJnangjA
Video by MrsZaubergloeckchen

Increases (kfb):
Knit 1 stitch, leave this stitch (the first one on the left needle) on the left needle and knit the same
stitch through the back loop, then move it to the right needle.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nIZlBLUIiI Video by Jutta Schneider

Stanzas are worked in CC ridges using short rows.

Ridges: “work (1) ridge” = knit 1 row on RS + knit 1 row on WS

Rests are worked over all stitches of the row in MC:

“work (1) rest” = 4 rows stockinette stitch = knit on RS + purl on WS for 4 rows total

Kfb-Increases at the left and right edge of the knitting:

In every RS and WS row, work „kfb“ into the first and last (selvedge) stitch. See Explanations above.

The selvedge stitch is the first stitch mentioned in the instructions, the increased stitch is the second
stitch in the instructions. The increase is not specifically mentioned in the instructions.
If instructions state: “k14 – DSt, k to right edge”, work as follows:
1 selvedge stitch, 1 kfb increase plus knit another 12 sts.

End of explanations!

Begin of work

In rest color yarn (solid), cast on 6 sts.

WS: k6
Now, start working ridges (knit on RS and on WS).

Row 1(RS):
work kfb-increase into the selv st, k2, place black-m, k2, work kfb-increase into the selv st = 8 sts

Row 2: (WS:)
work kfb-increase into the selv st, k1, work kfb-increase into the selv st = 10 sts

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until you have 20 sts on the needles.

Remember: The first and last stitch of the row is always a kfb.

– work (1) ridge (k on RS, k on WS)
– work (6) rows inverse stockinette (p on RS, k on WS), knit once over all sts without increases.

BO all sts loosely and break yarn.

Edging for right and left edge (7 rows inverse stockinette)

Picking up sts from the side edge:

Starting at the right long side of the shawl (point facing up), pick up and knit at a rate of 1 st picked up
and knit from every ridge and every RS row (in the rests).
In the cast-on corners, (at the first and last st) place one marker each, in these spots, an additional
kfb-increase will be worked.
Pick up and knit sts along the left edge of the shawl.
On the WS: knit once over all sts.
Now, working over all sts:
RS: purl all sts, work kfb into the stitch before marker #1, work kfb into the st after marker #2.
WS: knit all sts

Repeat last two rows another 4 times (= 6 new rows).

Bind off loosely, break yarn and hide all ends.

Finally, soak and rinse your shawl, then spread out on an even surface and block lightly, pinning in a
few spots.
