The past few decades have witnessed significant alterations in people’s
contemporary lifestyles. Drastic changes have been recorded in family
structure as well as each member’s role in this fundamental social unit. From
my personal perspective, immensely beneficial impacts can be derived from
such changes.
Substantial alterations are documented in the current composition of
families. Family structure has experienced a number of variations and
evolved into novel models, which supersede extended family paradigms with
multiple generations living under the same roof. For example, nuclear
families, single – parent families, one – person households and cohabitation
before marriage have gradually become norms in our modern society.
Second, the dominating role of being the sole breadwinner in the family of
males has been eroded to a certain extent, moving to dual-earner families. In
other words, women have gained greater autonomy in pursuing their career
paths and actively chosen to become working mothers.
I would strongly embrace such a tendency because of its beneficial impacts
as a whole. To begin with, smaller family sizes give more room for personal
privacy. For example, in nuclear families, parents and their children can
comfortably have their own living space without the need to share rooms or
household facilities with cousins or uncles. Furthermore, the rise in dual –
income households cultivates empathy and respect from husbands towards
their partners, fostering gender equality. In reality, many husbands decide to
step back and share the responsibility of domestic chores and child rearing
while their partners join the workforce, thus they can appreciate the role that
mothers and wives play in both family and societal development.
By and large, I would recapitulate that manifold transformations occurring to
both family dynamics and family livelihood/ shared responsibilities in
contemporary families are apparently positive.
