Apple Strudel Recipe

Serves: 6-8
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 40 minutes
Ingredients
For the Dough (or use store-bought puff pastry)

2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup (80ml) lukewarm water
2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter
1 teaspoon white vinegar or lemon juice

For the Filling

4-5 medium apples (about 2 pounds/900g), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
1/3 cup (50g) raisins (optional)
1/4 cup (30g) chopped walnuts or almonds (optional)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 cup (60g) breadcrumbs
2 tablespoons butter (melted)

For Assembly

4 tablespoons (60g) melted butter (for brushing)

Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)

Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Dough

Mix the flour and salt in a medium bowl.

Combine water, oil, and vinegar. Gradually add this liquid to the flour, mixing
until it forms a soft dough.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and
elastic.
Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.

Step 2: Make the Filling

In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, raisins, nuts (if using),
cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss well and set aside.
In a small pan, toast breadcrumbs in melted butter until golden brown. Let them
cool.

Step 3: Assemble the Strudel

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Roll out the dough on a floured surface, then carefully stretch it over the
back of your hands until it’s very thin (you should almost be able to see through
it). Alternatively, roll out store-bought puff pastry.
Transfer the dough to a clean, floured kitchen towel.
Sprinkle breadcrumbs over the dough, leaving a 1-inch (2.5cm) border on all
sides.
Spoon the apple mixture evenly over the breadcrumbs.
Step 4: Roll and Bake

Use the kitchen towel to carefully roll the strudel, starting from one long
side. Tuck in the edges as you go.
Place the strudel seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet.
Brush the top with melted butter.
Bake for 35-40 minutes, basting with butter every 10 minutes, until golden
brown.

Step 5: Serve

Cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar before slicing.

Serve warm with whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, or custard.
