What do you need:
• fine yarn/ sport/ 5 ply/ 12 wpi/ calls for 3 mm hook
• hook 3 mm
• tapestry needle
• common sewing needle and threads
• thin embroidery cotton thread – black
• scissors
• one flower button average 1 cm/ 0.4 inches
• mix of beads average 4 mm /beads size 6/0. I used Swarovski and Toho beads
• one button average 8 mm
I used this yarn:
100% mercerized cotton Catania Solids by Schachenmayr SMC
Yarn weight: Sport / 5 ply (12 wpi),
Yardage: 136 yards (124 meters) Unit weight: 50 grams (1.76 ounces)
Gauge: 26.0 sts = 4 inches
You will need small amount of these colors: 397 light turquoise, 146 turquoise, 261 regatta
blue, 173 light blue, 106 white, 179 camel, 172 silver, 254 gray-brown, 222 light pink, 114
cyclamen, 113 purple, 205 apple green, 392 light green. You will need about 16 grams of yarn
totally.
Tip: Tip for alternative material: you could use e.g. Camilla by Madame Tricote Paris,
Bahar by Alize, Camilla cotton by Ice yarn, Miami by Red Heart, Catona by Scheepjeswol etc.
Hook: 3 mm
Size of finished appliqué: hight 12.5 cm (5.2 inches) including the tail x width 8 cm (3,4
inches) measured in the middle of the body. Please remember, that the size of finished
appliqué depends on used material and your own style of crocheting also.

Instruction
Body and head
Begin with crocheting from bottom to top of the body. You will crochet in flat rows, making
single crochet.
Beginning: use light turquoise yarn and make CH 11
Row 1: insert a hook in second stitch from the hook and make 1 SC in each stitch from
previous row, CH 1 for turn of the work, turn (10 SC)
Row 2: inc, 1 SC in next 8 stitches, inc, CH 1 for turn of the work, turn (12 SC)
Row 3: 1 SC in each stitch from previous row, CH 1 for turn of the work, turn (12 SC)
Row 4: inc, 1 SC in next 10 stitches, inc, CH 1 for turn of the work, turn (14 SC)
Row 5 – 14: 1 SC in each stitch from previous row, CH 1 for turn of the work, turn (14 SC)
Row 15: dec, 1 SC in next 10 stiches, dec, CH 1 for turn of the work, turn (12 SC)
Row 16: dec, 1 SC in next 8 stiches, dec, CH 1 for turn of the work, turn (10 SC)

Row 17 – 21: 1 SC in each stitch from previous row, CH 1 for turn of the work, turn (10 SC)
Row 22: dec of SC, 1 HDC in next stitch, 1 DC in next 4 stitches, 1 HDC in next stitch, dec of
SC, CH 1 for turn of the work, turn (8 SC)
Round 23: make one circle round of SC around all part, CH 1, 1 SC in next 60 stitches. Join
first stitch of the round with 1 SlSt, end the work. Neaten free threads.

Wings
Make 2 wings. Use light blue yarn
Left wing (mirror look): insert a hook in 18th stitch from end of previous round (marked by
yellow dot) and crochet to the bottom direction: 1 SC in next 2 stitches, 1 HDC, 1 DC in next 7
stitches, 1 HDC in next stitch, 1 SC in next stitch, 1 SlSt in next stitch, end the work.
10 th stitch
18 th stitch
Right wing (mirror look): crochet from the bottom to the top of the body direction. Insert a
hook in 10th stitch from the end of the left wing and crochet: 1 SC in next stitch, 1 HDC in next
stitch, 1 DC in next 8 stitches, 1 HDC in next stitch, 1 SC in next stitch, 1 SlSt in next stitch,
end the work. Neaten free threads.
Legs
Crochet on the bottom of the body. Use camel yarn, insert a hook in 4 th stitch from the right
wing and crochet all stitches in one stitch: CH 4 + 1 SlSt + CH 5 + 1 SlSt + CH 4 + 1 SlSt in
same stitch, end the work. Skip 2 stitches and crochet the second leg by same way.

Ears
Crochet on the top of the body/head. Use gray-brown yarn, insert a hook in 9 th stitch from the
top of right wing (left picture) and crochet all stitches in one stitch: CH 6 + 1 SlSt + CH 7 + 1
SlSt + CH 6 + 1 SlSt in same stitch, end the work. Skip 9 stitches, insert a hook in next stitch
and crochet the second ear by same way (right picture).
Eyes
Make two same pieces.
Beginning: Use white yarn CH 4, join with 1 SlSt and form a ring
Round 1: CH 3 as a first DC, 9 DC in the middle of the ring, join first DC with 1 SlSt, end the
work (10 DC)
Round 2: CH 2 as a first HDC, 1 HDC in very first stitch, 2 HDC in each stitch from previous
round (20 HDC). Join first HDC with 1 SlSt, end the work.
Round 3: Use camel yarn, insert hook in the circle and make [CH 2, 1 SlSt in next stitch] –
repeat 11 times totally, end the work.
Bill
Use light gray yarn and crochet CH 4, insert a hook in last stitch from the hook and crochet 2
DC in same stitch, end the work.

Tail
Use dark turquoise yarn and crochet 5 feathers
Feather 1: CH 9, insert a hook in 4 th stitch from the hook and crochet 1 DC, 1 DC in next 2
stitches, 1 HDC in next stitch, 1 SC in next 2 stitches
Feather 2: CH 10, insert a hook in 4th stitch from the hook and crochet 1 DC, 1 DC in next 3
stitches, 1 HDC in next stitch, 1 SC in next 2 stitches
Feather 3: CH 11, insert a hook in 4th stitch from the hook and crochet 1 DC, 1 DC in next 3
stitches, 1 HDC in next stitch, 1 SC in next 3 stitches
Feather 4: CH 10, insert a hook in 4th stitch from the hook and crochet 1 DC, 1 DC in next 3
stitches, 1 HDC in next stitch, 1 SC in next 2 stitches
Feather 5: CH 9, insert a hook in 4 th stitch from the hook and crochet 1 DC, 1 DC in next 2
stitches, 1 HDC in next stitch, 1 SC in next 2 stitches
Use light pink and hot pink yarn, tapestry needle and embroider the tail. Use basic embroidery
stitches.
Small Flowers
Make 2 small flowers. Use violet and light pink yarn.
Make CH 6, insert a hook in last stitch from the hook and make 1 SlSt. You will make SlSt in
same stitch. Continue: [CH 5, 1 SlSt in same stitch] – repeat 4 times totally. End the work. You
will have 5 petals.

Flower
Use hot pink yarn
Beginning: CH 4, join first CH with 1 SlSt and make a ring
Round 1: CH 1, make 5 SC in the middle of the ring, join first SC with 1 SlSt (5 SC)
Round 2: continue in circle direction, don't turn the work and make [1 SC + 3 DC + 1 SlSt] –
all stitches in same stitch – repeat this group in every next stitch from previous round, end the
work. You will get 5 petals.
Leaves
Make one leaf using apple green yarn and one leaf using light green yarn.
Beginning: CH 6
Round 1: insert a hook in second stitch from the hook and crochet 1 SC in next 2 stitches,
1 HDC in next stitch, 1 DC in next stitch, 5 DC in last stitch, continue in circle direction, 1 DC
in next stitch, 1 HDC in next stitch, 1 SC in next 2 stitches, 1 SlSt in first stitch of the round ,
end the work.
Use tapestry needle and contrast yarn and embroider the leaves.

Branch
Row 1: use gray-brown yarn and crochet CH 30
Row 2: insert a hook in second stitch from the hook and crochet 1 SlSt in each CH from
previous row, end the work.
Finishing
Neaten free threads. Use tapestry needle and light blue and regatta blue yarn and embroider
the head of the owl, as you see on the pictures below.
Use tapestry needle and embroider the wings, as you see on the pictures below. Use dark
turquoise and light green yarn.
Sew the eyes and bill on the head of the owl. Neaten free threads.

Use black thin embroidery cotton thread and tapestry needle and sew the eyes. Use regatta
blue yarn and sew small “x” on the body. Sew the beads on the “x”. Sew flower button average
10 mm and beads. I used Swarovski and wooden beads average 4 mm. Sew some blue beads
on the edge of the body. I used Toho cube beads size 6/0. Sew tiny flower buttons average 6
mm on the tail. Sew the legs, flowers and leaves on the branch, use common sewing thread
and needle. Neaten free threads and shape the appliqué nicely.
Your owl appliqué is finished – congratulation :-)
