   •   1 cup unsalted butter, softened
   •   1 cup white sugar
   •   1 cup packed brown sugar
   •   2 large eggs

Instructions
Step 1: Preheat your oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease your cookie sheets or line them with
parchment paper.
Step 2: Cream together the butter and sugars
In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, white sugar, and brown sugar
until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
Step 3: Dissolve the baking soda
Dissolve the baking soda in hot water. Add this mixture to the batter along with the
salt.
Step 4: Combine the dry ingredients
Gradually blend in the flour until well incorporated. Stir in the chocolate chips and,
if desired, the chopped walnuts.
Step 5: Drop by spoonfuls
Drop large spoonfuls of dough onto the prepared cookie sheets, ensuring they are
spaced out to allow for spreading.
Step 6: Bake to perfection
Bake in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes, or until the edges are nicely
browned. Remove from the oven and allow the cookies to cool on the baking
sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
