Fashion Design
FEATURES OF FASHION
Fashion design differs from costume design due to the fact that its core
product tends to become obsolete after one or two seasons, usually. A
season is defined as

Fashion design is generally considered to have been born in the 19th
century with Charles Frederick Worth, who was the first to sew a label with
his name on clothes. While all items of clothing from any period in history
are studied by scholars as costume design, only clothing created after 1858
can be considered fashion design.

Some haute couture designers are self-employed and design for individual
clients. Others cater to the needs of specialty stores or high-end
department stores. These designers create original garments, as well as
those that follow

However, most fashion designers work for clothing manufacturers,
creating designs for men, women and children in the mass market.
Designer brands that have a 'name', such as Calvin Klein or Ralph Lauren
are usually designed by a team of individual designers under the direction
of a design director.
Haute Couture
The type of fashion that predominated until the 1950s was “tailored”
fashion or haute couture (French for high fashion). The term “made to
measure” can be used for any garment that is created for a particular
client. Haute couture, however, is a protected term that can only be used
by companies that meet certain standards well defined by the Chambre
Syndicale de la Couture. However, many ready-to-wear and even mass-
market clothing brands claim to create haute couture, which by today's
standards, is false. A haute couture garment is made to order by an
individual client, and is usually made from expensive, high-quality textiles,
crafted with extreme attention to detail and finish, often using time-
consuming, hand-made techniques.
Mass market
Today, the fashion industry relies primarily on mass market sales. The mass
market covers the needs of a wide range of customers, producing ready-
to-wear clothing in large quantities and standard sizes. Cheap materials
used creatively produce affordable fashion. Mass market designers
generally adapt the trends set by famous names in the fashion field. They
usually wait a season to make sure a particular style will be successful
before producing their own versions of it. To save time and money, they
use cheaper textiles and simpler production techniques that can be easily
executed by a machine. The final product can be sold at a much lower
price than a product from either of the other two production methods.
Collection (fashion)
A fashion
collection is a
set of garments
created by a
designer with
internal
coherence in
terms of style
and intended
for a specific
season of the
year.
Generally, designers
tend to create two
annual collections, the
Autumn-Winter
collection, which is
geared towards these
seasons of the year and
includes thick fabrics
and warm garments,
and the Spring-Summer
collection with
garments for this
season of the year,
often including
swimwear.
Collections can also be distinguished by:
Creating a collection[edit]
First, it begins with the designer defining the style or concept that
will give coherence to the collection. The collection can be inspired
by multiple places, eras, situations, women's styles, etc. Often, the
collection is given a name related to the designer or the chosen style.
Next, the fabrics with which the garments will be made are selected.
These include fabrics, plain or printed fabrics, taking into account the
coordination between them.

and interlinings are also chosen, as well as other aesthetic parts that
make up the garment: buttons, laces, zippers, etc.
The designer defines all the garments that will make up the collection
and their combination, including their accessories: shoes, belts, bags,
glasses, etc.
The patterns for the entire collection are then made in the same size
so that they can be tried on by the same model.
The patterns are cut to create the sample book, which consists of one
example of each of the garments that make up the product, in order
to show it to potential customers. Along with the garment sample
book, the color sample book is created.
