1. Why are people considered a Resources?
Ans: People are nation’s greatest resources. Nature’s bounty become significant
only when people find it useful. It is people with their demands and abilities that
twin them into resources. Hence, human resources are the ultimate resource.
2. What are the cause for the uneven distribution of population in the world?
Ans: Geographical factors:
A) Topography: People always prefer to live on plains rather than mountains and
plateaus because these areas are suitable for framing, manufacturing and service
activities.
B) Climate: People avoid extreme hot and cold climate.
Eg –Sahara Desert, Polar region of Russia, Canada and Antarctica
C) Soil: Fertile soil provides people with better agriculture.
Eg- Fertile plains such as Ganga and Brahmaputra, Hwang He, hang Ziang in
China and Nile in Egypt are densely populated.
D) Water : People live in areas where fresh water is available.
Eg- The river valley of the world are densely populated while deserts have
sparse population.
E) Minerals : Areas with mineral deposits are more populated.
Eg- Diamond mines of South Africa and discovery of oil in Middle East lead to
Setting of people in these areas.
F) Social :Areas of better housing, education and health facility are more densely
populated.
Eg- Pune
G) Culture : Places with religion and culture attract people.
Eg- Varanasi, Vatican City and Jerusalem
H) Economic: Industrial areas provide employment opportunities. The large
number
of people are attracted to Mumbai in India and Osaka in Japan.
3. The World population has grown rapidly. Why?
Ans: The main reason for the growth of world population was because of better
food supply and medicine, deaths were reducing while no. of birth’s still remained
fairly high.
4. Discuss the role of any two factors influencing population change.
Ans: Factors influencing population change are:-
Natural growth rate and Migration
1. Natural growth rate: The difference between the death rate and the birth rate of a
country is called the natural growth rate.
A) Birth rate: The number of live births per 1000 people is called birth rate.
B) Death rate: The number of deaths per 1000 people is called death rate.
1. Migration: It is the movement of people in and out of an area.
A) Immigration or in-migration :When a person enters a new country.
B) Emigration or out-migration: When a person leaves a country.
5. What is meant by population composition?
Ans: Population composition refers to the structure of the population. The
population composition helps us to know how many are:
A) Males or Females
B) Which age group they belong to
C) How educated they are
D) What type of occupations they are employed in
E) What their income levels and health conditions are
6. What are population pyramids? How do they help in understanding about
the population of a country?
Ans: A graphical presentation of the age-sex composition of population of a
country is called population pyramid. They help in understanding about the
population of a country by the following ways:-
*The total population divided into various age groups, e.g.,5 to 9 years,10 to14
years.
*The percentage of the total population, subdivided into males and females.
*The shape of the population pyramid tells the story of the people living in that
particular country. The numbers of children(below 15 years) are shown at the
bottom and reflect the level of births.
*The size of the top shows the numbers of aged people(above 65)and reflects the
number of deaths.
*The population pyramid also tells us how many dependents there are in a country.
There are two groups of dependents-young dependents(aged below 15 years)and
elderly dependents(aged over 65 years)
