3. Abstraction
Before we proceed to the formal discussion,
What’s the reason why you communicate
with people? (Student will answer.)
We communicate to express ideas, for
interaction or to express our purpose.
Very good, that is one of the reasons why
we communicate. We often communicate
for several reasons or purposes, especially
the speaker.
Our topic for today is Functions of
Communication or simply the purpose of
communication.
There are five Functions of Communication.
These are Regulation/Control, Social
Interaction, Motivation, Emotional
Expression, and Information Dissemination.
Everyone please read the definition of
Regulation/Control. (Students will read and explain.)
1. Regulation/Control
To control or regulate is to
exercise restraint or direction
formally or informally.
In establishments, rules,
regulations, and policies are
formal rules and agreements,
while unspoken or unwritten
rules are informal.
Regulation/Control is about the speaker’s
purpose to control others by managing their
behavior. It is to direct others and insist on
his/her own agenda. This happens
particularly among family members,
acquaintances, and others. The words are
usually directives, orders, and requests
meant to regulate and control other
people’s behavior.
By giving concrete examples, when do we
regulate/control communication? Why is
regulation/control essential in
communication? (Students will answer.)
When our teacher tells the class to be
quiet, regulation/control is important to
show authority and order.
Very good.
Everyone please read the examples of
Regulation/Control. (Students will read the examples.)
Examples:
School rules and policies on
5
attendance, grading, and dress
codes are prescribed.
Employees are urged to follow
authority hierarchies and some
formal guidelines.
Parents are telling a child not to
misbehave.
Doctors’ prescription
(Students will read and explain.)
Everyone please read the definition of 2. Social Interaction
Social Interaction. Communication allows
individuals to interact with
others. It is the most popular and
the primary reason why we
communicate. It is used to
produce social relationships;
develop bonds, intimacy, and
relations; express preferences,
desires, needs, wants,
decisions, goals, and strengths;
and to give and get information.
Since people love to talk and talk with
others, social interaction allows people to
connect with one another. We usually use
informal terms, and it is casually delivered.
By giving concrete examples, when do we
use social interaction in communication? (Students will answer.)
Why is social interaction essential in We use social interaction when talking
communication? to friends, classmates, neighbors, and
other people like vendors and
jeepney/tricycle drivers. It is crucial to
connect with others.
Very Good.
(Students will read the examples.)
Everyone please read the examples of Examples:

Invitation
“Would you like some coffee,
tea, or me?”
(Students will read and explain.)
3. Motivation
Communication motivates or
Everyone please read the definition of encourages people to live better.
Motivation. Motivation is the energy that
influences a person’s behavior in
different ways in pursuing a goal
or objective.
In Motivation, the speaker’s purpose is to
persuade or try to convince another person
to change his/her opinion, attitude, or
6
behavior because we have a goal to be
achieved or a motive that must be
accomplished.
By giving concrete examples, when do we
use motivation in communication? Why is
motivation essential in communication?

4. Information Dissemination

Information. convey information. This is the
most basic function of
communication.
Whether talking to friends or acquaintances,
convince or to motivate, it is usually
necessary to provide information. The
words must be carefully chosen depending
on the receivers of the information.
Communication provides data and
information for effectively completing tasks,
solving problems, and eliminating
uncertainty.
By giving concrete examples, when do we
use information in communication? Why is (Students will answer.)
information essential in communication? We use information when giving
announcements like how to lessen the
spread of COVID-19. Information is
essential because it provides facts and
data.

one’s teeth properly.
(Students will read and explain.)
Everyone please read the definition of 5. Emotional Expression
Emotional Expression. Communication facilitates
people’s expression of their
feelings and emotions.
The speaker appeals to the
listener’s feelings and emotions
and encourages him/her to act in
a particular direction.
In Emotional expression, the speaker’s
purpose is to move another person to action
by their own accord, more than
regulation/control and motivation.
By giving concrete examples, when do we
use emotional expression in (Students will answer.)

houses for the victims.
Remember that the functions of

the speaker’s context.
