PART B: READING
Text 1: Read the text and answer the questions below.

JOURNALISM AND JOURNALISTS

Journalism is a very interesting job. Basically, a journalist follows political and social
developments and writes articles about them in newspapers, magazines or Internet sites or they
prepare news for TV channels and radios. It is difficult to make a list of daily activities of an average
journalist. We can still list some of those activities. Journalists often interview important people and
review records to collect and report information, and they find the possible results of the facts. In
general, journalism informs and educates people about the events in their country and all over the
world.
Journalists are usually graduates of departments such as journalism, communications, English
or political science. Some journalists begin their careers at the school newspaper or at small local
magazines or newspapers, but most of them come to this profession later in life after they become
successful in other professions. Journalism is a very competitive job and good educational
background, experience and hard work are necessary for it. Interpersonal skills, good writing and
computer skills, and a journalist's instinct (the ability to choose a good story as news) are also
necessary for success. Journalists in international newspapers usually know one or two foreign
languages.
Professional journalists must report news quickly. More than 80 per cent of the journalists
believe time pressure is one major characteristic of this job. They often have limited time to learn
about the details of the event and to prepare this event as a news story. They must also report
everything accurately because many people read their news stories and wrong information in the
news is dangerous for a journalist's career. These two characteristics make journalism a very stressful
profession.
Because the daily routine of a journalist is changeable, there isn't much time for family,
hobbies or any regular plans. Long hours of work and limited time for news preparation are really
negative factors, so for journalists, it is really difficult to have good relationships with their family and
friends. As a result, journalists are generally single and have few friends.
[A] Journalists have an exciting life because they travel to different places and meet new
people all the time. [B] They enter government buildings easily and meet politicians and bureaucrats.

Perhaps you always wanted to take trips to distant lands like Alps or the Maldives. However,
you had some financial problems such as the plane fares, cost of hotel rooms, food, and other
entertainment, but don't be sad. Now, you can afford to travel to all your dream places! How is all
this possible?
Welcome to the world of “home exchange”! Home exchange is a new holiday activity. If you
allow a person to live in your home and you don't mind living in his/her house and then this great
holiday and travel alternative is very suitable for you. In home exchange, exchangers use each other’s
homes at a convenient time. However, they don’t necessarily change a house; there are lots of
alternatives about this. For example, one exchanger exchanged his home for a yacht. Another couple
swapped their villa in Italy for a caravan in Los Angles because they always wanted to tour the USA.
Often, home exchangers also include their automobiles as a part of the package.
Who are home exchangers? Home exchangers come from different occupations. Mostly, they
are professors, retirees, business executives, doctors, lawyers and other professionals. Most of them
are well-educated and adventurous, and have an interest in learning more about different places and
cultures. Singles as well as couples and families are getting into home exchange.
If home exchange is unfamiliar to you; in other words, if you do not know anything about
home exchange, you do not need to be afraid. There are 100,000 successful home exchanges every
year. Just think of some of its advantages: Firstly, you can learn a lot about other cultures. Secondly,
when you are away, your guests look after your house. And finally, it is a free place to stay during
your holiday. Let’s listen to Jane from England. “I and my family exchanged our house with Imma
from Barcelona, Spain. Imma’s house was very clean and comfortable. It was also close to the city
center. Imma was a very helpful person because she left necessary telephone numbers such as the

nearest hospital and pharmacies. She also left a list of the places to see in Barcelona. We spent great

Text 3: Read the text and answer the questions below.

Do people think about beauty in the same way? Researchers studied this and found
interesting results. Groups from different cultures think about the main factors in beauty in different
ways. However, is it genetics or culture that has more effect on the idea of beauty?
Devenra Singh, a psychologist at the University of Texas at Austin, did an experiment in 1993.
She wanted to learn the types of attractive female body shapes for men from different cultures. Dr.
Singh gave drawings of different women to a group of men and asked them to choose the most
attractive woman. These men had different cultural backgrounds. They came from a variety of
different cultural histories, but they all chose the women with the perfect shape of body as the most
attractive. The general weight was not important. Body shape was more important than the weight
for attractiveness.
Douglas Yu, a biologist at Imperial College in London, disagreed with Dr. Singh’s ideas.
According to Dr. Yu, entertainment and advertisements create a global culture because all men and
women live in this global culture, and it has the biggest effect on their ideas of beauty. To show this,
Yu did an experiment on a small group of people. This group was not European or American. They
were far away from technology. In his experiment, Yu found that men in this culture found
overweight women more attractive. According to Yu, this was because they lived far away from the
media.
To check the correctness of his experiment, Dr. Yu tested two other groups from the same
culture. But this time, they watched Western programs on TV and used the internet. He found that
these men liked more Western-like women because the men had contact with Western culture, so
their idea of beauty was under its influence. This result showed the effect of media on our
understanding of beauty and that Dr. Singh’s experiment was not complete.

7
1. What is the main idea of the text?
a) The media affects our understanding of beauty.
b) People from different cultural backgrounds understand beauty differently.
c) Men like more western-like women as they have contact with western culture.
d) Body shape is more important than the weight in all the cultures around the world.

2. What was the purpose of Singh’s experiment?

She wanted to learn the types of attractive female body shapes for men from different cultures.

3. What did Singh find out as a result of her experiment?

All men chose the women with the perfect body shape as the most attractive. The general weight
was not important. Body shape is more important than the weight for attractiveness.

4. Why did Yu choose two different groups from the same culture in his experiments?
To show the effect of media on the idea of beauty.

5. What does “backgrounds” in paragraph 2 mean?

a) varieties b) histories c) women

6. What does “influence” in paragraph 4 mean?

a) effect b) opinion c) appearance

7. What does “them” in paragraph 2 refer to?

a) women b) a group of men c) drawings

8. What does “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?

a) global culture b) effect c) entertainment

Text 4: Read the text and answer the questions below.

Weather has a powerful effect on the physical world. It also affects people’s personalities.
But how do we know about the effects of weather on people? We know it from bio-meteorologists.
These scientists are weather researchers. They study human health and emotions in response to
atmospheric conditions. “Atmospheric conditions at a time or place” is the definition of “weather”.
Some examples of these conditions are wind, rain, snow, humidity and air pressure. The weather
conditions of the atmosphere greatly affect people’s health, thoughts, and feelings.
All over the world, winds come from high mountains. The winds fall faster and faster, and the
air becomes warmer and drier. What are the effects of these winds from high mountains? According
to bio-meteorologists in Russia, powerful winds increase the number of strokes (a loss of the ability
to move parts of the body). Strong winds result in heart attacks (sudden stopping of the heart) in
Italy, too. Also, people all over the world have headaches during powerful winds. In addition to
winds, cold weather causes flu and cold all around the world.
Atmospheric conditions cause physical illnesses, but they also influence people’s mood
(emotional conditions). For many people, winter is very frustrating. They feel depressed and unhappy
in winter. They get tired and they cannot work efficiently. This is called SAD (Seasonal Affective
Disorder). SAD is a type of winter depression. It affects nearly half a million people every winter. SAD
has many negative results such as sleeping problems and over-eating. On the other hand, many
people feel more energetic and happy during the summer time, and they become more hopeful,
