Sooty Show was well advertised in Pontins with large posters
dotted around the main areas and it was clear this would be one
of their main shows. I passed by the Fun Factory Showbar, where
the show was due to take place, early in the day. The Fun Factory
Showbar has a fully equipped fairly large stage and seats around
six hundred people. The stage itself was impressive, with a dance
floor directly in front of it, round tables behind that and tiered
seating right at the back. The stage didn’t have tabs and no
curtains meant that the Sooty set was visible and I got a sneak
pre-show look at the set!
I returned an hour before the show to take a seat and, to my
surprise, every seat was taken, making The Sooty Show the most
popular event in the resort. The show started and it was clear
that David had mastered it. It was no

was recorded at Hendon, Middlesex,
in the second quarter of 1958.
On 24 May, Goodliffe mentioned
Mandrake’s appearance at the Astor

Andrews… and that reminds me that Max Andrews is reported to
have shaken the dust of the old country from his feet and
departed for Auckland, New Zealand.”
Mandrake was the unoriginal nom de théâtre adopted by Gerald
Sullivan whose nightclub act at the Astor in London was reported
in Abra on 31 May 1958. The present writer met Mandrake
around this time when he played the Metropole Theatre in

There was a corollary to this report of the sale of the business The Vampire Magic Club continued to operate under Dick

advised that, contrary to what has been alleged, this contract is
entirely valid…whatever the position may be between Dr Alexander

and diplomatically withdrew with an Editorial Note to the effect
that there obviously was a right and a wrong about the matter
on which he wouldn’t presume to speak, and it was a subject
that could not be profitably pursued in the pages of Abra. But
before this final episode occurred it is known that Cannon had
written to several magicians advising them not to invest in Max
Andrews’s enterprise, which underlines the fact that he was by
this time concerned about his own investment in the company.
So, what were the factors that caused a magic business which,
at its height, was second only to Davenport’s, to end in the
manner it did? On the available evidence it would seem there
were at least two causes. The first, undoubtedly, was financial,

Mathematical magic may have a reputation for being rather

310 THE MAGIC CIRCULAR OCTOBER 2012 www.TheMagicCircle.co.uk

David discussed the last generations of touring illusion shows
that were seen in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s and illustrated his
talk with over one-hundred images from the archive. David was
joined by Michael Pearce who recounted tales from his time
touring with Virgil and Julie as a carpenter and assistant. The
content was fascinating and the images are a reminder of just
how much interesting material is to be found in our Archives.
Scott Penrose discussed the magician’s classic symbol of power,
the magic wand. Scott talked about a project The Magic Circle
undertook for a Playstation game in which he had to generate a
list of the five most interesting wands in history and then
displayed some of his personal collection of wands. These
included a selection of wands made for collectors, such as wands
signed by the likes of Paul Daniels and John Calvert, as well as
gadget wands that are used to accomplish particular tricks. Of
particular interest amongst these were three coin wands, one of
which was made with the original method that allows the wand
to be viewed from all angles before a coin is produced.
An allied art to magic was represented next by Peter Hijak, a
collector and expert on puzzles. Peter started with a talk in which
he explained the different categories of puzzle that exist before
choosing the three that he thought would be of the most interest
to magicians. He then showed images of a selection of
impossible objects as well as a number of trick boxes with cleverly
concealed opening mechanisms. In addition to his talk Peter
brought a selection of puzzles with him and it was a good thing
there was a break after his talk – the following twenty minutes
was filled with people asking him questions or sitting on the floor
trying to solve one of the puzzles he had brought for them to try!
Last year Chris Power won the prize for the most enigmatic
talk title with “How to Fill a Sandwich”. This year he maintained
the standard with “How to go Fishing and What Bait to Use.”
Chris talked about taking advantage of the situations that often
occur in close-up performance, happening to see a spectator’s
card for example. He explained some ideas for using this kind of
knowledge in a subtle and powerful way and also discussed
some ideas that allow you, as the performer, some control over
what kind of opportunities will present themselves.
The final talk of the evening, and indeed the Magician’s Choice
programme, was given by Bruce Smith. Bruce has been working
as a demonstrator at Hamley’s for twenty-five years and shared
some of the secrets behind demonstrating magic. He discussed
the physical aspects of the demonstration, the patter and the
psychology of the performance, as well as the ways in which
these techniques are useful to anyone performing magic, not just
those who are trying to sell it. The power of his techniques was
made clear by the fact that they were working on his audience
for the talk, even as he was explaining what he was doing!

WEEK NINE – 28 AUGUST 2012

The final week of Magician’s Choice took the form of a social
night, a chance to talk and relax after the five plus events that
had been held on a weekly basis for the last two months. To add
to the atmosphere of the evening Noel Britten and Will Houstoun
organised a magic themed pub quiz with various teams
competing to triumph as the winners!
In the last three years Magician’s Choice has transformed from
a new initiative into one of the most popular Monday night
programmes of the year. Thank you to everyone who has been
involved in Magician’s Choice whether they organised events,
presented a talk or workshop, or helped out behind the scenes
making sure everything could run as smoothly as it did.

Eddie Izzard, as you may be aware, has since gone on to

Just as no-one even noticed Eddie all those years ago, it’s
perfectly possible that some superstar of the future appeared at
this year’s Fringe only to be cruelly overlooked by one and all.
According to official statistics, there were about 21,000
performers taking part in 2,700 different shows. With so much
on offer, trying to identify the superstars of tomorrow is never
going to be easy.
Locating the shows you want to see at the Fringe isn’t
particularly easy either. There are some 280 different venues
involved, spread across a fairly wide area of the city. The
blanket term ‘venue’, it has to be said, covers a multitude of
inns. Some of these performing spaces are sumptuous palaces
of entertainment offering a luxurious theatrical experience.
Others amount to a clump of plastic chairs in a pub basement
with a dishcloth cunningly draped over the 2003 Fire Safety
certificate upon which, in attractive scarlet lettering, may be
seen the harsh imprint of the word ‘FAIL’. Tom Binns
