Introduction

“A KNOWLEDGE STORE”

Increasingly, the accreditation activity is gaining momentum in our country as people and
educational institutions have come to realize that quality enhancement is essential for the
institutions and the country. In the process of institutional accreditation, libraries have a
crucial role. The services of the libraries has been expanding as they contribute significantly
to the learning process, particularly the e-learning process.

Location:-

It should be conveniently located in quite , attractive surroundings .The library may be


separate for nursing college or it may be combined with the other courses ,where an
institution is running multiple courses .The size will depend on the number of users. In
general, it should be large enough to accommodate the students. Adequate ventilation and
good lighting, both natural and artificial are essential.

Furniture and Equipment

It should include:

 Comfortable chairs and table of convenient height


 Metal book shelves or cupboards with glass doors.
 Bulletin boards
 Book and newspaper display rack
 Journal display rack with space for back numbers
 Boxes for pamphlets
 Stationery items such as index cards, borrowers cards, labels and registers.

Facilities for Library

• College libraries need to have facilities that promote effective and easy access for all
users.
 In the area of physical facilities, the libraries need to offer safe, comfortable, well-
lighted, clean space, with adequate and appropriate seating arrangement.
 While allocating the seating space with special attention being paid to reserve
collections.
 Generator to provide uninterrupted power supply to the users.
 The libraries need to prepare well-framed rules and guidelines with regard to hours of
access, circulation policies, and other regulations to offer better services to the users.

Best Practices for College Libraries

 Computerization of library with standard digital software


 Inclusion of sufficient information about the library in the college prospectus
 Compiling student/teacher attendance statistics and locating the same on the notice
board
 Career/employment information/services
 Internet facilities to different user groups
 Information literacy programs
 Suggestion box and timely response.

Library General Rules:-

 Any student/staff of the college can use the library and its facilities with a library
identity card.
 Readers and visitors should not bring their belongings in the library or deposit on the
main counter of the library.
 Users should leave the books/documents on the main counter after consultation.
 Photocopying services could be available for the library materials against payment.
 Users will be responsible for complying with copyright act while Photocopying library
documents, books, journals, etc.
 Improper use of library facilities by a member will lead to the suspension/termination
of his/her membership.
 Silence and strict discipline should be maintained in the library by all users and the
library staff. Everyone shall ensure that no reader should feel disturbed in their study
by any act of his/her.
 Use of mobile phones is strictly prohibited inside library premises. If found, the membership
as well the use of library facilities may be suspended and mobile will be confiscated.
 Library borrower card is not transferable.
 Members leaving the library have to stop at the exit so that the material borrowed or taken
out of the library by them is checked.
 Upon any infringement of the library rules, members shall forfeit the privileges of admission
and membership of the library.
 The Librarian reserves the right to suspend the membership of any member found
misbehaving, abusing the library staff or behaving in an indecent manner.
 Use of eatables in the Library is strictly prohibited. Utmost care shall be taken by all to keep
the library clean.
 Faculty/Students proceeding on long leave or on deputation, etc. should return the books
that are borrowed, prior to availing the leave or deputation.
 Certain books are intended to be used only in the library premises. These include reference
books, textbooks, rare books, current and bound periodicals, etc. All these are stamped as
'Not to be issued' 'for reference only.
 Borrowers are requested to check if the books being borrowed are complete and no pages
are missing in it. In case of defect or damage in the book, should be brought to the notice of
the library staff.
 Borrowers are responsible for the books they borrow. Books lost, torn or damaged (tearing of
pages, under lining, making notes, damaging of binding and the like) shall attract serious
action including suspension of membership and/or replacement of documents concern.
 The lost /damaged books shall be placed by the borrower with latest edition else equivalent
amount plus an additional charge.
 • The library rules and regulations can be modified from time to time and according to the
need of the institute. Everybody has to maintain pin drop silence in library

Guidelines for Library According to Indian Nursing Council:-


1. There should be a separate library for the college. The size of the library should be
of minimum 2300 square feet.
2. It should be easily accessible to the teaching faculty and the students.
3. Library should have seating arrangements for at least 60 students for reading and
having good lighting and ventilation and space for stocking and displaying of books
and journals.
4. A minimum of 500 of different subject titled nursing books (all new editions), in
the multiple of editions, 3 kinds of nursing journals, 3 kinds of magazines, 2 kinds
of newspapers and other kinds of current health related literature should be
available in the library.
5. In a new college of nursing the total number of books should be proportionately
divided on yearly basis in four years. At least 10 set of books in each subject to
facilitate for the students to refer the books.
6. The number of journals should 15 out of which one-third shall be foreign journals
and subscribed on continuous basis.
7. There should be sufficient number of cupboards, book shelves and racks with glass
doors for proper and safe storage of books, magazines, journals, newspapers and
other literature.

In the library there should be provision for:-

 Staff reading room for 10 persons.


 Rooms for librarian and other staff with intercom phone facility.
 Video and cassette/CD room (desirable).
 Internet facility.

Library Committee:-

It consists of following members:

 Chief librarian
 Assistant librarian
 Faculty member (lecturer/nursing tutor)
 Student.

Members of the committee are responsible for proper functioning of the library. The
regularly review the need of books; make arrangements for the selection and purchase of
books. They further give suggestions to the principal of the college of nursing about the
purchase of books and other equipments for the library.

Also committee could impose any fines for the loss of books and replacement facilities for
the loss in consultation with the principal of the institute.

Librarian:-
A qualified and skilled librarian(s) is essential to manage the library effectively. They are helped by
the library assistants. The functions of a librarian include:

 Maintaining up to date record of all books, journals, etc.


 Maintaining all pertinent records and registers such as accession register and others
 Classifying and cataloguing all books and journals
 Displaying books and other material of current interest
 Checking for worn out and sending it for binding
 Participating actively in library committee meetings
 Ordering for books or renewal of journals, etc.
 Timely report to the principal of the issues of importance pertaining to the library
 Organizing and conducting stock verification.

Budget:-
Budget is required for equipping library with:

 Furnitures
 Book shelves and racks
 New books and journals
 Stationery items
 Maintenance of library such as electricity, etc.
 Binding of books and back volumes
 Payment of librarian and other persons.

Library Holdings
It usually includes:

 Dictionaries - general, medical and nursing


 Encyclopedias
 Government data and other reports
 Books on basic sciences Books on nursing sciences
 Newspapers
 Selected biographical and philosophical books.

Organization of Books
Books are usually arranged as per the classification system adopted in an open shelf for easy access.
Reference books may be kept separately. It is good always to classify the books in selected groups
for easy maintenance. Each book should be given a specific accession number and the details such as
the author name, title, publisher, place, year, cost, etc. should be maintained. For borrowing, a card
system can be maintained, which will facilitate checking.

SUMMARY:-I summarized my topic today I discussed about the library services in the
colleges and also I discussed about library committee ,role of librarian, member of the
committee, rules and regulation of library & how to organize books in the library.

Conclusion: The assessment of our library services has revealed a strong foundation for
supporting the information needs of our community. Key strengths include:
- A diverse and relevant collection of resources

- Friendly and knowledgeable staff

- Accessible facilities and technology

However, areas for improvement have also been identified, such as:

- Limited hours of operation

- Insufficient programming for certain age groups

- Opportunities for enhanced digital resources and online engagement
