Potted Feast
Some of easiest vegetable to grow in pots are compact, fast
growing, and easy to be taken care of like tomatoes, pechay,
camote (sweet potato leaves), Talinum, lettuce, and other leafy
vegetables.
Plant Containers
Vegetables will grow in just about any container –
polystyrene, boxes, plastic pots, decorative planters, window
boxes.
- In a tiny courtyard or balcony, larger pots will maximize
your space more effectively than lots of smaller ones,
which can look cluttered and messy.
- Hanging basket with vegetables can also be used as
decorative fixtures.
- The size and depth of the containers; shallow roots such as
lettuce require a depth of 20-25. Tomatoes, carrots, depth at
least 30-40 cm.
Success in Growing Green in Containers
To succeed in growing fruits and vegetables in containers,
observe the following reminders:
1. Start with good quality potting mix.
2. You will need to wash your containers often, especially
during hot, dry weather. With watering, nutrients are
quickly leached from pots, so plants should be liquid-fed
regularly.
3. Another important key to success is the availability of
sunlight with least five to six hours a day for most crops.
4. Roots crops and the so-called compact vegetables are
happy in deep pots.
5. Space saver vegetables have space-saving qualities that
include non-running forms of pumpkins, melon, and
cucumber.
Colorful and helpful Companions
Herbs and flowers can bring color and texture to your
potted vegetable garden. Most herbs have medicinal
qualities like the following:
1. Lagundi
2. Yerba Buena
3. Ampalaya
4. Niyog-niyogan
5. Sambong
6. Tsaang gubat
7. Bayabas
8. Akapulko

 Soil that's consistently moist, but not soggy, yields the best
greens.

 Sow spinach, kale and mustard six weeks before the average
last frost in spring, three weeks later for lettuce and swiss
chard.
 Set out malabar spinach plants after the threat of frost has
passed.

 As seeds sprout, thin seedlings to 6 inches apart by cutting, not

pulling.

 When plants bolt (or send up flower stalks), pull them up — the
flavor will start to diminish after this.
