Carthage is located near the city of Tunis in the


Tunisian Republic . It is located in the north-east
of the country, 15 km from the capital, on a hill
approximately 57 m high. Its coastal strip
extends for about 3 km, and it is bordered by
the Mediterranean Sea to the east, the
municipality of Sidi Abi Said to the north, the
municipality of La Marsa to the west, and the
municipality of El Kram to the south. The area of
the region is 640 hectares, and the area of
archaeological sites is approximately 407
hectares, 63.58% of the total area. Its
Mediterranean climate differs from that of the
capital, with mild winters and cool summers.
Pursuant to Order No. 1246 of 1985, the site of
Carthage was classified on the World Heritage
List established by UNESCO . As a tourist city, it
is visited by approximately one million tourists

According to ancient historians, the Phoenician


princess Elissa (or Elissar) founded Carthage in
814 BC. The princess fled from her brother with
her companions to Tyre in Lebanon and named
the city "Qart-Hadasth," meaning "new city"
(from Phoenician : qart, meaning city or village,
and hadasht, meaning new). The name became
