The Tudors: History Information Sheet

The Tudor The Tudor family were the kings and queens of England
from 1485 until 1603. The Tudors came to the throne
Family after the Battle of Bosworth which was the last battle of
the Wars of the Roses. The House of York and the House
of Lancaster had fought about who should Henry VII
rule the country. The House of York had a
white rose as their symbol and the House of Lancaster
had a red rose as their symbol. When Henry Tudor (a
Elizabeth of Lancastrian) won the battle and became king, he
York combined the roses to form the Tudor Rose.
Henry Tudor was born in 1457. He married Elizabeth of York in 1483,
two years before he became king. Elizabeth was born in 1466 and
was nine years younger than Henry. Henry Tudor became King
Margaret
Henry VII on 22nd August 1485. Henry VII and
Arthur Tudor Tudor Elizabeth of York had four children who
survived beyond infancy. Their first child was
a son named Arthur Tudor. He was born in 1486. He married
Catherine of Aragon in 1501 but died in 1502 at the age of fifteen.
Henry VII’s first daughter was named Margaret Tudor. She was born Henry VIII Mary Tudor

in 1489 and died in 1541. The most famous of their four children, who
later became King Henry VIII, was born in 1491. He became king in 1509 and ruled until his
death in 1547. Henry had a younger sister called Mary Tudor (1496-1533).
When Arthur Tudor died, his wife was betrothed to
Henry. Catherine of Aragon (1485-1536) married Henry
in 1509, just a few months after he became King Henry
Catherine Jane Anne VIII. Catherine and Henry had a daughter called Mary
of Aragon Seymour Boleyn who later became Queen Mary I. However, they
divorced after more than twenty years of marriage as
Catherine had not given Henry the son he wanted. Henry then married Anne Boleyn who
was born around 1501 and they had a daughter together who later became Queen
Elizabeth I. Anne Boleyn was beheaded in 1536. After Anne Boleyn’s death, Henry married
Jane Seymour (1508-1537) and they had a son, Edward,
who was born in 1537. However, Jane never recovered
from the birth and she died twelve days after Edward
was born. Henry next married Anne of Cleves
(1515-1557) who was from Germany, but Henry disliked Anne of Catherine Catherine
her instantly and they divorced after only a few months Cleves Howard Parr
of marriage. Catherine Howard was next. She was Anne
Boleyn’s younger cousin and was born in 1520. She followed the same fate as her aunt
and was beheaded in 1542. Henry VIII’s sixth and final wife was Catherine Parr (born in
1512). She stayed married to Henry until his death in 1547 and then died a year later.
Henry VIII had three surviving children with his six wives. His only son
was Edward. He was nine years old when his father died and he
became King Edward VI, but he died just six years later in 1553.
Henry VIII’s first daughter, Mary, was born in 1516 and later became
Mary I Elizabeth I Queen Mary I, also known as ‘Bloody Mary’ because of
all the Protestants she put to death. She died from illness
in 1558. Henry’s second daughter, Elizabeth (1533-1603) became queen in 1559
and ruled for forty-four years. Queen Elizabeth never married and had no
children so when she died there were no more Tudors to rule England so the
Edward VI
Stuart family came to power.
