Introduction to Graphic Design
• Definition: Graphic design is the process of visual communication and problem-
solving using typography, photography, iconography, and illustration.
• Types of Graphic Design Software:
o Free and Open Source: GIMP, Inkscape.
o Proprietary: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator.
o Online/Freeware: Pixlr, SVG Edit.
Introduction to GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program)
• What is GIMP?
o A free, multi-platform tool for image manipulation.
o Suitable for photo retouching, image composition, and image creation.
o Supports GNU/Linux, Windows, and other operating systems.
o Provides access to and modification of source code under the General Public
License (GPL).
• Download GIMP: GIMP Downloads.
Getting Familiar with GIMP's Working Environment
• Main Components:
o Main Toolbox: Contains tool icons for selection, painting, and
transformation.
o Tool Options: Shows options for the selected tool.
o Image Windows: Each open image appears in a separate window.
o Layers, Channels, Paths Dock: Displays layer structures and channels for
editing.
o Brushes/Patterns/Gradients: Manage painting styles and patterns.
Working with Images
• File Operations:
o Create: Use File → New to start a new image.
o Open: Use File → Open or drag and drop files into the GIMP interface.
o Save/Export: Save in GIMP’s native format (XCF) or export to JPEG, PNG, TIFF,
etc.
• Image Modes: RGB, Grayscale, Indexed
Drawing and Painting Tools
• Basic Tools: Pencil, Paintbrush, Airbrush, Bucket Fill, Gradient, Clone, Heal,
Smudge, Dodge/Burn.
• Paint Dynamics: Adds realism by adjusting brush behavior based on stylus
pressure, speed, or direction.
• Text Tool: Create, edit, and style text layers.
• Paths: Create Bézier-curves, stroke paths, or convert text to paths.
Transform Tools
• Common Tools:
o Align, Move, Crop, Rotate, Scale, Shear, Perspective.
o Unified Transform: Combines rotate, scale, shear, and perspective tools.
o Flip: Horizontally or vertically flip layers or selections.
• Special Tools: Cage Transform, Warp Transform.
Working with Layers
• Concept:
o Layers are like stacked slides, allowing independent editing.
o The bottom layer acts as the background, with foreground layers stacked
above.
• Layer Features:
o Opacity: Adjust transparency from 0 (transparent) to 100 (opaque).
o Blending Modes: Control how layers interact visually (e.g., Multiply, Dodge).
o Layer Groups: Organize layers into tree structures for easier management.
Enhancing Photographs
• Improving Composition:
o Rotate and Crop images for better framing.
• Color Adjustments:
o Normalize, Equalize, Stretch Contrast, White Balance to fix
over/underexposed areas.
• Sharpening:
o Use Unsharp Mask or Blur/Sharpen tools to fix fuzzy images.
• Removing Unwanted Objects:
o Clone and Heal tools for removing clutter or imperfections.
o Red-eye removal for correcting eye reflections in flash photography.
