What is a Preposition?

A preposition is a word used before a noun or pronoun to show place, time,


direction, cause, manner, or instrument.

Prepositions of Place
in – The books are in the bag. 
on – The pen is on the table. 
under – The cat is under the bed. 
over – The plane flew over the mountains. 
behind – He is hiding behind the curtain. 
in front of – The car is in front of the house. 
between – She sat between her two friends. 
next to – The lamp is next to the bed. 
among – He was sitting among the crowd. 

Prepositions of Time
at – The meeting is at 5 PM. 
on – Her birthday is on Monday. 
in – We go on vacation in June. 
before – Finish your work before lunch. 
after – We’ll go shopping after school. 
since – He has been ill since Monday. 
for – She stayed here for a week. 
during – It rained during the night. 

Prepositions of Direction/Movement
to – She is going to school. 
into – He went into the room. 
onto – The cat jumped onto the table. 
from – He came from Delhi. 
out of – She got out of the car. 
across – They ran across the field. 
along – He walked along the beach. 
through – We walked through the tunnel. 
up – She climbed up the ladder. 
down – He slid down the hill. 

Prepositions of Cause, Reason, Purpose


because of – The match was canceled because of rain. 
due to – The delay was due to traffic. 
for – This gift is for you. 
out of – He acted out of fear. 

Prepositions of Manner/Agent/Instrument
by – The book was written by the author. 
with – He cut the paper with scissors. 
like – She dances like a professional. 
as – He worked as a teacher for 5 years. 

Prepositions of Possession
of – The tail of the dog is wagging. 

Common Mistakes to Avoid


She discussed about the topic. She discussed the topic.
Where are you at? Where are you?
He went in the room. He went into the room.
She sat in the chair. She sat on the chair.
They went to inside the house. They went inside the house.
He jumped in the table. He jumped onto the table.
She is sitting between many people. She is sitting among many people.
