Cuddle and Play Cow Blanket

IMPORTANT PATTERN NOTES

 Blanket is crocheted in rows of single crochets.
 If you haven’t made a graphghan before here is a very comprehensive video from The Crochet Crowd:
http://thecrochetcrowd.com/crochet-graphghans-picture-projects-tutorial/ - PLEASE DO WATCH IT.
 I’ve included 1 page chart for your reference in this pattern. In case you prefer using a picture chart rather than
written instructions.
 The blanket is designed in a way that you will only need maximum of 5 skeins of yarn at one time (3 white and
2 grey). There will be few rows that have more color changes but they are very short therefore you can just run
the other color in the middle of the sts like in tapestry crochet. I’ve highlighted those places on the chart. Letter
‘G’ on the white background means run grey inside the sts made in white. Letter ‘W’ on the grey background
means run white inside the sts made in grey. I’ve also highlighted the stitches that run the other color inside
them in the written part. NOTE: I used light grey for spots therefore the color running inside the sts is not visible.
If you are using more contrasting colors like black and white, the color running inside the sts will be quite visible,
it may be worth using a bobbin or another skein for those few sts rather than running the color through.
 Always leave around 6-8 inch tail when starting and fastening off. Weave in the yarn ends securely in the
opposite directions several times. Additionally in head and legs parts (especially where magic ring was used)
split the yarn in 2 and tie a knot (on the wrong side) around the stitch. It is likely the blanket will be played with
and washed a lot and this is to prevent it from unravelling in the future.
 When starting new color or after finishing with a color, you can crochet over the ends, closing them inside the
stiches of the same color. I wouldn’t recommend doing that for an entire end, just 3 to 4 sts. Weave in the
remaining part of an end in the opposite directions inside the sts of the same color, this way the ends will be
more secure.
 Use row counter or note a row number straight after you finish it. Alternatively print out the pattern and tick
the row as soon as you finish it.
 The blanket size and sections are well thought out and designed in the way that when folded, the cow has the
specific size. Because of this it’s important to check your gauge before you start making the blanket. The places
where the blanket folds are highlighted on the chart with turquoise color. There are 2 side sections in white that
fold towards the inside and then the blanket is folded in 3 parts. The 2 side sections are done in plain white and
are in separate columns in the written instruction table. To make the folding easier I’ve added a BLsc and FLsc
interchanging on the 19th and 50th st of each row. This creates a slightly thinner fabric in those places so the fold
falls easily in place. This is slightly visible and you can choose to make standard sc stitches in those places if you
don’t like the look of it.

SEWING ON THE HEAD:

Sew middle/bottom part of the head (rows 9 to
15) to the middle/front part of the blanket (row
1 to 7, sts 42 to 47) as shown on the photos
below. To help you find the middle, fold the
blanket in half and mark it.

SEWING ON THE TAIL:

Fold the blanket to form a sheep as per folding
instruction. Using yarn end sew on the tail to
top/back part of the cow’s body, making several
overcast sts. Weave in the remaining ends inside
the tail.
