The Common Crafting System:
During Long Rests, a character can spend up to two hours of their time
crafting. To do so, the player chooses a set of Crafting Tools in their
possession and picks an item from that Tools' crafting list. To start a
project, the character must have all necessary materials in their
possession whenever they spend time on the project. When crafting,
the player rolls 1d20 to determine how much progress is done on that
project. If the character is proficient in those tools, add their proficiency
bonus. Otherwise, halve the roll (rounded down, minimum of 1). The
number rolled is added to the project's total Crafting Progress (CP).
Whenever the number of CP required to complete the project is met,
the character receives their crafted item and finally expends the
materials used to make it. Characters may only work on one project at
a time, and must complete or cancel a project to start another one.
Foraging for Materials:
Once a day (24 hours), a player can choose to search their current area
for materials. To do so, the player states the exact material they are
searching for as well as which Crafting Tools they are using to search,
and the DM decides if the search is fruitful. A player can only search for
materials that are used by the Crafting Tools they are using. (For
instance, a player searching with Glassblower's Tools can only search
for glass) Depending on the area, certain materials might not be
available. Optionally, a DM might enforce an (Intelligence) Survival
check to see if the search is successful. If materials are available, the
player rolls 1d4 to determine how many materials were found.
Making Artwork:

When crafting artwork, upon completion, the player rolls 1d20 to

determine the quality of the artwork.
1 = Worthless
2-4 = Poor
5-8 = Below Average
9-12 = Average
13-16 = Above Average
17-19 = Excellent
20 = Masterpiece
If the character is proficient with the Crafting Tools used to make the
artwork, add their proficiency bonus. Otherwise, halve the roll
(Rounded down, minimum of 1).

Deconstructing Items:

Time can be spent deconstructing an item the same way it is spent to

craft one. During Long Rests, a character can spend up to 2 hours
deconstructing an item back into its material components. The item
must be on the crafting list of the Crafting Tools being used to
deconstruct it. To do so, roll 1d20 whenever time is spent
deconstructing the item. If the character is proficient with the Crafting
Tools being used, then add their proficiency bonus. Otherwise, halve
the roll (rounded down, minimum of 1). The CP required for
deconstructing an item is half as much as it takes to craft it, rounded
down. Once the required CP is met, the item is lost and the character
will gain its material components. If an item does not have material
components, it cannot be deconstructed.

Other Notes:
- Because all Crafting Tools have more use now, they are all priced at
50gp.

- This system can be used in conjunction with the custom background

rule, which means players choose 2 skills, 1 language, and 1 toolset
when making a character.

- Likewise, I use a house rule: eating during a short rest allows the
player to roll advantage on their hit dice recovered. If eating is
important in your campaign, Cooking Utensils will be more valuable.

- Lockpicks are used to unlock doors, rather than using the Thieves'
Tools itself.
