Volleyball was created in 1895 by William G. Morgan as a game for his classes at the YMCA that required little physical contact. The first match was played in 1896 at Springfield College with a tennis net set 6 feet off the ground. Over the years, volleyball continued to grow in popularity and additional rules were introduced, including its addition to the Olympic Games in 1964.

NATIONAL HISTORY OF VOLLEYBALL

Guillermo G. Morgan (1870-1942), instructor at Young Men's Christian


The YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts, decided to mix
elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to create a game for
your classes to businessmen, who require the least physical contact than
basketball. He created the game of Volleyball (at that time called
Mintonette). Morgan borrowed a tennis net, and lifted it 6 feet with 6
inches above the ground, just above the head of a man of average height
During a game demonstration, someone commented to Morgan that a
the player seemed to volley the ball back and forth over the net, and perhaps
"Volleyball" would be a descriptive name for the sport. On July 7, 1896 in the
Springfield University played the first match of volleyball.

1900: A specific ball was designed for this sport.


1916: In the Philippines, an offensive ball-passing style on a high trajectory for
to be hit by another player (set and point) was introduced.
1917: The game was changed from 21 to 15 points.
1920: Three strikes per side and subsequent attack rules were established.
1922: The first national championships of the YMCA that were held
held in Brooklyn NY, 27 teams from 11 states were

1928: The Volleyball Association of the United States (USVBA, now USA
volleyball) was formed. The first open in the United States was held,
it was no longer destined only for YMCA squads.
1930: The first game of two men on the beach took place.
1934: The national volleyball referees were approved and recognized.
1937: At the AAU convention in Boston, it was acknowledged that
the U.S. Volleyball Association was the official national body in charge
of the administration of this game.
1947: The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) was founded.
1948: The first beach doubles tournaments were held.
1949: The first World Championship was held in Prague,
Czechoslovakia.
1964: Volleyball was introduced in the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
1965: The California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) was formed.
1974: The World Cup championship in Mexico was broadcast on television to
Japan.
1975: In the U.S., the national women's team began its training.
