1.2.3 IO Devices

Input/output devices allow communication between the computer and the outside world. They include peripherals such as keyboards, screens, and mice that input data into the computer, and output peripherals such as printers and speakers that present the processed information. Each device has an associated driver that manages the communication between the device and the computer.

I/O DEVICES

In computer science, input and output (I/O) is the

communication between an information processing system, such as the
computer and the outside world. The I/O peripherals are used by a
person to communicate with a computer
An input/output peripheral is one that the computer uses to input
data and after being processed by the CPU, generate the output of information. Its
the function is to read or write, permanently or virtually, everything that
let's work with the computer so that it can be used by users or others
systems. Examples:
Touchscreen
Virtual helmet
Multifunction printer
The input and output system is built as a set of handlers.
stacked, each of which is associated with an input/output device
(files, network, etc.).
Offers generic services to applications and execution environments that
They allow managing the I/O objects of the system. Through them, one can
access all file and device handlers such as: disks,
networks, console, sound cards, etc.
Types of input devices
1. Keyboard: The keyboard is an effective device for inputting data
no graphics such as image labels associated with a display
of graphs.
2. Mouse: It is an electronic device that allows us to give
instructions to our computer through a cursor that appears in
the screen and clicking to carry out a specific action;
as the Mouse rolls over the desk,
3. Microphone: Microphones are the transducers responsible for transforming
acoustic energy into electrical energy, allowing, therefore
the registration, storage, transmission and electronic processing of the
audio signals.
4. Scanner: It is an information input unit. It allows
the introduction of graphic images to the computer through a system
of point matrices.
Types of output devices
1. Screen or Monitor: It is where the information provided by the
computer. In the most common case, it is a device based on a
cathode ray tube (CRT) like those in televisions, while in
laptops have a flat liquid crystal display
2. Printer: it is the peripheral that the computer uses to present
printed information on paper. The first printers were born many
years before the PC and even before monitors, being the method
more common to present the results of the calculations in those
primitive computers.
3. Speakers: Devices through which sounds produced from the
sound card. Currently, there are quite a few models available that cover
the most common offer available in the market.
4. Headphones: They are devices placed in the ear to be able to listen to the
sounds that the sound card sends. They have the advantage that not
they can be heard by another person, only the one who uses them.
5. Multimedia: Combination of Hardware and Software that can reproduce
outputs that use various media such as text, graphics, animation,
video, music, voice and sound effects.

Characteristics of input devices.

They introduce data.
Send information to the processing unit.
They are used to enter codes, data, letters, clicks into the computer.
They can provide information or instructions.

Placement of components located outside the computer

The information entered is transformed into recognizable models, in
binary code.
They communicate with the computer through the controller card of the
device and port
Data is read from input devices and stored in the
central or internal memory.
Characteristics of output devices.
They are used to display things or extract data from the computer.

Allows viewing the results of the data processing performed by the computer
(data output).
They receive the processed information and reproduce it so that it is perceptible.
for the person.

Operation of input/output devices

It is necessary for the task that runs on the CPU to be governed by the
commands and data that are outside the computer. Likewise, for
the results derived from this task must have some utility, they should be able to
send to some external medium to the computer where they can be stored or
represent oneself in a format recognizable by the user.
For the relationship with the external environment of the computer, there are
input/output devices, such as terminals, printers, screens,
etc.
An input/output system requires both hardware components
necessary, like a structure of programs that manage properly and
efficiently the devices.
It would be very costly for the CPU to handle the peripherals.
For this reason, normally, each device or group of peripheral devices
it has a device controller, whose electronics include
controllers and specialized chips for managing that type of devices.
