Julie Peterson

Create a web page using HTML and CSS according to standard. Input a logo and give a description and process for the logo.

Process

I used Adobe Illustrator to first come up with a logo. I initially went with a colorless logo utilizing only black but I then reverted my original decision based on the fact that there was a color scheme required and that I could also build a minimalist-styled webpage using just the monochromatic color as accents to my overall design. This ended up being very rewarding for me. I love the minimalist look and I believe that it works best on clean, modern-looking webpages. After the logo was finished I began coding. I didnt use any of the code supplied by the course but I developed my own from scratch as I felt it was better suited and more industry standard than the provided code would give me. I fully developed the HTML prior to adding CSS. I did not weant to have to go back into my HTML code once I decided to begin styling as it would be a waste of time so I thought ahead and wrote all the div tags that I would end up needing to call in the CSS. I used Sublime Text 2, WAMP and Google Chrome to build the page as I knew it would be a simple project and would not need the more specific tools available on FireFox. I truly had a great time doing this project.

Objective

Julie Peterson

Create a photo montage using more advanced skills in Adobe Photoshop such as masking and filtering.

Process

First I scoured Google images for material. When I had come up with both the game and the message I wanted to send, I copied the pictures from the various sites that offered them making sure to copy the URL for reference. I originally placed three images on top of the background image in hopes of being able to tell a story. Upon some very constructive critique I felt that the center image which is the image you have before you exemplified the message that I was trying to get across to my audience. I cropped the object image by using the lasso tool with 100px feathering and copied it onto the project. I then used the masking tool to blend my image into the background being careful not to make the edges too rigid. My hope was that I could input an image that was bold and showed great detail while still taking advantage of the blending characteristic of the masking tool. Once I finished I placed some text. I researched the text used for the logo and obtained the font and used it in my project. I feel it gave it a very bold look. I changed the color of Tomb for some contrast. I felt comfortable using the same text for my title in the body copy as my quote was not long. Also I aligned the quote under the title and adjusted the kerning to stretch to the length of omb. Finally I filtered the bottom section which was gray to the deepest black that I could get so that I could create more contrast.

Julie Peterson

Create three original logos for one specific company using Adobe Illustrator.

I first tried to think of a way to exemplify headshots purpose in a logo. I had to try to reach out to their audience. I made a few sketches in a sketchbook. In the end they all looked a bit tacky. I tried to make them in adobe illustrator but I ended really making about six logos which I chose the best of (which is saying something). I got them critiqued and they got pretty slammed. The third logo I received a lot of help and it looked the best in my opinion. It was also the favorite among my critics.

Julie Peterson

Create a photodesign work that incorporates a photograph personally taken and input a line of text that relates to the photograph somehow.

Process

I first took a series of photographs and selected the one I wanted to use for the this project. I then uploaded the image into Photoshop and adjusted the image by levels, vibrance/saturation, colors and sharpness. Initially I made the image too dark but I went back and readjusted the levels. When I finished my Photoshop adjustments I copied the image into a new project tab to turn into my project. I chose a quote that I thought was fitting and initially created contrast with text by differentiating the sizes. The fonts I used initially were Myriad Pro and Times New Roman. Upon receiving critiques, I made fewer of the words large and turned the large font into a script text. I then did something I thought was pretty clever. I cut the image of the F-hole out of my image and turned it into a color swatch. I then flattened my image and saved it as a jpeg and here it is before you.

Instructor Objective Process

Julie Peterson

Create a letterhead with an original logo for a business.

First I created the logo using the drawing tool and included a custom font I found online. I opened up InDesign and placed a logo at the top to begin styling my letterhead. At first the logo looked granulated via the image placement utility so I just took the controller-looking part of my logo and directly pasted it in there so it would be more vector and clear. I then input my information at the bottom right and them placed a very large watermark on the left side of the page using just the controller graphic used my logo. This created a light but interesting effect that allowed me to balance my piece a bit more.

Create a double-sided business card exemplifying an original logo for a ficticious company

Process

First I created the logo using the drawing tool and included a custom font I found online. I then created a box that was to be the outline of my business card. I inserted the logo and added my name and information using text boxes. Finally I created another InDesign document with enlarged versions of my cards to show them more clearly but for some reason the copy paste function couldnt handle the kearning adjustments I made in Illustrator but you can see the correct format in the small versions of the business cards.

Understand pixel size and how it relates to inches. Create event ad with one image and text including a call to action.

Process

I sketched four possible flier layouts and came to a decision on one. I then scanned a picture from a cookbook my wife had that I thought would set both the color scheme I wanted to use as well as the overall message. The picture was scanned at 150 ppi as I did not plan on resizing it for the ad. I then imported the image to Photoshop where I proceeded to crop the image to get rid of edges. Finally I placed the image into Word where I positioned the picture and laid out the design based on the sketch I chose. My classmates, wife, and teacher critiqued the flier which allowed me to get ideas on ways of turning it into what it looks like now. I tried not to block in white space this time and also tried to use a bit more asymmetry. I also increased padding in text boxes to decrease tension. I also left no widows this time. I exported the file as a PDF and then converted it into a JPEG and that is what you have before you.

Instructor Objective Process

Julie Peterson

Create a black and white flier for a graduate conference.

The process was fairly simple as I first researched the topic and the intended message. Then I went about sketching possible flier layouts. I came up with four and decided on the one I liked best simply by staring them down. I then proceeded to use InDesign to begin structuring my layout. Once I came up with something I had it reviewed by my classmates as well as my wife who has no design experience but would still be a fresh pair of eyes. I then proceeded to make the final which was quite different in fact. Some of the principles I tried to utilize from the FOCUS book were whitespace, contrast, flow, and just a bit of asymmetry.

Description
A web page developed for Openbook as an assessment of my skills in HTML and CSS as well as buidling a fully responsive website.

Sublime Text 2, WAMP, Firefox

April 3, 2014

Objective

Create a web page using HTML and CSS built according to the mockup received by the Openbook. The page should be fully responsive and implement the logo and design principles displayed in the mockup.

Process

I first took the mockup and uploaded onto a utility in a browser that allowed me to use a dropper tool to extract the colors used by Openbook. After I copied my hex values I becan coding in Sublime Text 2. I first coded the HTML file. This was the easiest to start with as I would be able to layout my page and input the various div tags to organize my code. After the HTML was coded I began the CSS. This was made easy by the fact that I though ahead and assigned ids to all of my div tags in the HTML document already. The few extra styling assignments that I didnt forsee were later added as classes both into the CSS and HTML document. I styled everything using only margins and padding. This would provide the responsive nature of the page to a certain degree. I would then implement @media tags so that I could configure specific resolutions to affect the styling. This is what moves the navigation links down under the header so that it would fit on the screen of a mobile phone. I used WAMP and Chrome to contiually test as I went along.
