Lesson Plan Math

The lesson plan is for a 50-minute 1st grade math class on partitioning circles and rectangles into halves and fourths. The objectives are to introduce vocabulary like halves, fourths, and quarters, and have students explore folding shapes into equal shares using workbooks, play dough, and assessment questions. ELL students will get instruction through translation and be paired with native English speakers. Students with behavioral issues will get one-on-one guidance. The lesson can be integrated into art, social studies, and science classes involving shapes, fractions of the earth, and moon phases.

Name: Prema Chruthoti

Date: 3/4/2017
Subject: Math
Length of Lesson: 50 minutes
Grade Level: 1st grade

Core Curriculum Objectives:

Strand: GEOMETRY (1.G)

Standard 1.G.3 Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares; describe the shares
using the words halves, fourths, and quarters; and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter
of. Describe the whole as two or four of the shares. Understand that, for these examples,
decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares.

Vocabulary Development:
Students will be able to use different vocabulary such as halves, fourths, quarters, equal shares,
half of, fourth of and quarter of.

ELL Considerations:
The ELLs will be given instruction using google translator for the activities. They will be
encouraged to use the vocabulary during the activities. They will be grouped with the native
English speakers to develop their speaking skills.

Preparation:
Smart board
Overhead
PowerPoint presentation
Pencils
Erasers
Colored paper with different shapes
Plastic knives
Play dough
Donuts
Gram crackers
Class activity book pp. 219 222
TIME: LESSON:

10 min Introduction:
Go over the objective and make students read the objective Today I will
learn to partition circles and rectangles into two or four equal shares.
Introduce vocabulary words with the help of donuts.

20 min Content/Activity:

Activity 1 Discover various ways to fold circles and rectangles into halves.
I will review the shapes and attributes of a square, rectangle, circle and a
triangle.
Students will use page 219 from their work book to show different ways
to fold circles and rectangles into halves.
Students will explore folding a shape into halves.

Activity 2 Shapes and Fourths

I will have three squares on the board and will invite volunteers to draw
lines partitioning them into fourths.
I will repeat the activity for the rectangles and circles as well as well.
10 min
Closure:
Students will be given playdough and knives to make shapes such as
square, rectangle and circles.
Students will show halves and fourths
10 min
Assessment:
Students will solve pp. 221-222 from class activity book.

Adaptations:
My ELL students are able to follow directions when I talk to them slowly. I will check my ELL
students work and will provide feedback right away. I will pair my ELLs with native English
speakers so that he will have a chance to communicate with his peers. On the other hand, I have
few children in the classroom who have behavioral issues. From my observations, I know that
they do not focus and need lot of attention and help from the teacher. For these children, I will
use proximity and will guide them during the activity.

Integration:
I can integrate this lesson in an art class by asking them to draw shapes with halves and fourths.
Students will then make fraction flowers pasting those shapes on the flower. I can also use this in
social studies to show students that of the earth is covered by water and is the land. I can
further divide to show them how much drinking water we have on land. In science, I can ask
students to observe and chart the moon everyday so that they could see a half moon in the phases
of the moon.
