Rationale for Activities

Initial Large Group Discussion
o To allow the members of the class to be able to voice concerns and confusions
that they encountered while reading the paper before the other activities so that
they are able to focus and learn from the other activities without being held back
by the confusions from their personal reading
o To allow members of the class to help others to better understand the text and to
work through misconceptions together, so that there can be a lot of collaboration
and sharing of what individuals got from the paper

Multiple Intelligences Quiz

o To explore the category being in the world
o We know that everyone learns differently, and their intelligence styles may differ
from our own. We hope that if we can be aware of others intelligence styles then
we could be more effective as mentors. For example, we can try to teach using a
variety of styles to ensure that peoples learning needs are being met
o The varying intelligences are not fixed, therefore it is possible to learn through a
new style with the help of someone elses expertise in it. We can internalize how
another person approaches a particular situation, and see how we might be able to
benefit from another persons approach.

Facilitated Discussion on Time/Awareness of the World

o To explore the categories Time and Awareness of the World
o Time plays a big role in our learning experiences. It can either be fun and fly by
or it can really drag on. As mentors, our goal is to try and create enjoyable
learning experiences, where people are learning, but enjoy doing so.

o As mentors we can utilize novel ideas, and switch up the way we teach in order to
help make the time fly by.

Video: Three Things I Learned While My Plane Crashed

o To explore the categories Experience and Transformation of Experience
o This video highlights a few of the concepts of experience as outlined in Jarvis
chapter. This man had an primary episodic experience that he thought about in a
variety of different styles (reflective, contemplative, evaluative, analytical and
prospective). This ultimately led to a change in his life in the way that he interacts
with others. He ends by posing a question about how we might choose to live
differently which indicates that we can have a secondary experience through his
story and learn something from it
o Seeing anothers journey through an experience will help to give us the
vocabulary to better reflect on our own experiences

Lifelong Learning Post-it Note Poster

o To explore the categories The Person Changed and More Experienced and
Lifelong Learning
o This is a chance to be reflective upon our own experiences that have led to
lifelong learning and see that others have had different significant events in their
lives that have helped to shape them into who they are. We are not the same
people we were ten years ago because our experiences have greatly changed us.
o This is a chance to validate the experiences of others and perhaps learn more
about who they are as a whole person.
o This provides us with the opportunity to define what it means to be lifelong
learners and how we can encourage that with our mentees

Take Home Mini-Reflection

o To allow the chance to quickly reflect on how the activities deepened their
knowledge of the text
o To be able to reflect on how the discussions may have impacted the individuals
and how they may have changed their ideas or perceptions
o To be able to decide how they want to take these ideas and use them in their
mentorship

Optional Debrief Discussion (if time permits)

o Discuss what was learnt and felt by students as they experienced the various
activities
o Be able to finish any thoughts that were cut short by the time limitation
o Share with the rest of the class, any thoughts that were shared that individuals
really enjoyed
