Classification of clouds
There are four major types of clouds based on height,shap and forms
1.High clouds (40,000 to 20,000 above from the surface of
ground) mainly they are cirrus clouds (Ci)
2.Middle clouds (20,000 to 7000) they are alto clouds (At)
3.Low clouds (lower then 7000 ) mainly they are stratus
clouds (St)
4.Vertically extended clouds they are cumulus clouds (Cu)
Names for Clouds
The names for clouds are combination of prefix and suffix
stratus/strato = flat layer and smooth
• Cumulus/cumulo = heaped up or fluffy
• Cirrus/ cirro = high up or feathers like
• Alto = medium level
• Nimbus/Nimbo = rain bearing clouds
High clouds (Cirrus)
• High clouds are of three types
1. Cirrus clouds
2. Cirrocumulus clouds
3. Cirrostratus clouds
Cirrus clouds
The higher
altitudes detached
clouds having
silky appearance
They are
composed of tiny
crystal therefore
they do not cause
rainfall
often called
Mare’s tail
Cirrocumulules
These are white
colour clouds
having small
globules and
arranged in a
distinct groups
Cirrostratus clouds
These clouds have
smooth appearance
and spread in the
sky like milky thin
sheet .
These are
transparent clouds
and create halo
Middle clouds Alto (At)
•Middle clouds are of two types
1. Altocumulus clouds
2. Altostratus clouds
Altocumulus clouds
characterized by
white wavey layer or
globular forms
these clouds form a
fairly regularly
patterns of line
these clouds are
often called as sheep
clouds they normally
indicate fine weather
Altostratus clouds
They are thin sheet of
gray blue clouds having
fibrous or uniform
appearance
they are lighter in colour
then nimbous clouds but
darker then cirrus
when they become thick
sheet sun or moon
become faintly visible
behind them
Low clouds mainly stratus clouds
( st )
• Low clouds are of three types
1.stratus clouds
2. stratocumulus clouds
3. nimbostratus clouds
Stratus clouds
These are
dense low
lying dark gray
colour clouds
close to the
ground surface
.
Bring dull
Stratocumulus
clouds
These are light
gray colour
clouds .
These are
composed of
globular masses
arranged in line ,
waves or group .
Nimbostratus clouds
low clouds of dark
colour , very close to
the ground surface.
They create
darkness because
sunlight is obscured
due to high
thickness , increase
humidity in
atmosphere, known
as rain clouds .

Cumulus clouds
These are dense,
White, widespread
and dome shaped
globular masses
with flate base.
They are associated
with fair weather
Cumulonimbus
clouds
They are
thunderstorm clouds
associated with
heavy rainfall ,
thunder and
lightning etc .
They are very dark
and dense cloud ,
